I’d hope they make it with a minority or female so I can be reminded that I am racist and a bigot. So happy there are people willing to tell me how I MUST live my life or else
I always loved that he spared the retired gladiator. That dude paid his damn dues, surviving a career where you were likely to die if you lost, where every injury and scar threatened to slow you down, where every battle just gave all the viewers another opportunity to study your style. And yet that dude managed to live long enough to retire. Here he was, past his prime, his body riddled with scars, his muscles fading, and yet he survives to fight another day through the mercy of Maximus.
In reality the chances of dying in a gladiator arena were actually quite low some gladiators went on to fight hundreds of fights generally when the battle was won your opponent would stop the fight as fighting to the death would make it expensive for the owners of the gladiators and insurance companies.....brilliant film though
I always thought it had nothing to do with mercy and everything to do with defying the emperor. If the Comidus had told him to spare him he would chopped off his head.
Watching this again I think Maximus didn't change his mind about killing his opponent. I think he never intended to - he was waiting for commodus to give the kill order so he could refuse it. He knew how to read the crowd better than commodus.
he says he only kills if he needs to. but he doesn’t take commands from commudus so he purposely waited for him to give the signal then chose not to kill
@@BikesandBoulders Disagree. Had Commodus indicated to spare the loser (thumbs up), I don't think Maximus would have then killed him just to spite Commodus. That would have alienated the crowd and given Commodus a pretext to execute him.
To everybody that’s talking about how Tigris gets stabbed in the foot but bleeds out of his mouth, did you not see him get whacked in the face with a shield right before it?
When he got hit with the shield the head (and body) went backwards, and Maximus immediately stabbed him in the foot, so, when Tigris leaned forward to take the axe out of his foot, he obviously bleeds from his mouth from the previous hit. Not bad editing at all! In fact, you can say that the director payed attention to the smallest detail right there. Perfect.

Alexander i dont think it was an order. I say that because the soldier on the right side moved down his head in respect. It was a spontaneous movement.... i have no words. Its beautiful. This movie is probably one of the best of all times. And only one thing makes me sad about it and is joaquin phoenix not winning the oscar. It hurts me. He gives weight and density to every scene he is in. Such a great actor. Multiple times nominee. I hope he gets an oscar one day.
Pedro Sávio WHAT? He didn't win the Oscar for this? I was compelled to the fact that he did win the Oscar but evidently I've just read through the disgust overtime of people who were against him not winning it!. I watched the whole film again today and voiced to myself the incredible acting Joaquin was purveying. That's awful he didn't win it:/. And yeah this movie is unbelievable if the case of that solider showing respect to maximus is to be true, then there's not much else to be said, this movie is a masterpiece 😀.
@@googleaccofalex no the Praetorians were more than just ordinary guards the emperor relied on them to keep power in Rome so they had more power to do what they wanted... as you can see in the last scene when none of them gave him their swords
2 great actors , Joaquin Phoenix and Russel Crowe. Although Crowe mightve won best actor in a leading role that year, Joaquin deserved best supporting actor but only got people to hate him because of this movie. He played his villainous, incest, backstabbing, cheating role to perfection. And for people to hate him cuz of this movie, means he did his job well
***** Im not stating rumors, it was true people disliked Joaquin because his acting in that movie was so good, being such a sick fuck, that people disliked him. Then he started redeeming himself in roles like in the movie Signs, and so on, and now has become one of my favorite actors.
That one soldier who looked down while retracting his spear was like, "i understand your pain and anguish now, general Maximus..." Powerful even after all these years...

+mikecantreed but the "bros recognizing other bros" phenomenon seemed a tad ridiculous given that they would have been iced right quick for their sedition. It made it seem like those dudes were just bouncers.
Once a Roman Emperor loses the favour of the Praetorian Guard he's doomed. Caligula was assassinated by his Praetoriani, as was Pertinax, the historical successor to Commodus.
In fact, it can be argued the Praetorian became some of the chief political players in Rome. It is why Augustus kept them outside of the city, but they were moved in later on.
I liked how the other 2 tigers calmed down when the 3rd one died, like : "oh shit he killed Brain, this guy means buiness, we better chill the fuck out". "but dude im fucking hungry" "i dont care man, im hungry too but, do you want to fucking die like Brain? Just sit down and be a nice little kitten got it?"
My favorite part of that scene. The guards let him through without being cleared to do so and they give him a nod of respect. He's earned it, Commodus hasn't.
That man was the real MVP of this situation, the crowd response to his outburst was what completely protected Maximus in this scene. Absolute brilliance, every bit of this movie and every small detail that was given proper attention and meaning.
@ natebardwell It is a great movie but they totally missed the cameraman in blue jeans standing in the crowd during the famous, “Are you entertained?!” scene.
He knew two things. He knew exactly what Commodus was trying to do, and that he was starting to get desperate. As deep as Commodus' words hurt, Maximus knew that if he didn't take the bait, it would earn him more sympathy from the public, and reveal Commodus, and his taunt, to be pathetic and weak.
6:45 I don't see anyone else talking about this. The way the praetorian looks down in almost a shameful manner as he lifts his lance, and gently nods as in a sign of respect as Maximus leaves... The movie makes a point of Maximus gaining the respect of his men, but this simple five second scene also hints at how everyone eventually respects him, even his enemies and rivals
A tiny detail, but SO telling. A wonderful contribution from one extra in a "cast of thousands" scene. I never noticed that before (very easy to miss). Now, I'm never to miss it whenever I see this scene. Thank you for pointing it out!
@@krak9927 I had the same reaction when I realized that was Sean Bean in Troy 15 years later! Seeing this scene in a packed out movie theater on opening night was just great fun. Maximus versus a retired gladiator with a sick mask, tigers on all sides, cinematography is beautiful as all hell. Who said he’s chubby? Yeah, he’s not ripped, but you can definitely see he wasn’t looking for aesthetics, just raw power and ate a lot for it. He’s still huge, if it was all fat, he’d look a lot different, you can see muscle definition in his arms. Maximus looks like a very fit man as well, but he’s not ripped or huge, just looks functionally fit.
+Slavic Power (Слава Сербии-Слава России) u think that they put six pack abs for showing power or showing off and attract girls to see the movies, ffs it's like seeing megan foxe's ass and think about her power
DavidR747 tbh soldiers in ancient armies probably were VERY different. From young slim boys that barely could hold a sword and athlets with 6-packs to "bear-like" barbarians that was fat and strong as fuck. Most of soldiers probably had 6-packs that were visible, but I doubt they looked like modern athletes in movies. Some actors in movies about ancient times look more like superheroes than soldiers. Maximus looks kinda realistic tho.
"The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end." What an incredible line. Even if Maximus was murdered, he knew that there were men of stoic character and sound judgment still in the world that would put an end to Commodus
I love this line also. It shows not only the modesty of Maximus, but also Commodus as a petulant, repulsive, reprobate, consumed by his own ego! He is only the ruler of Rome by title & not by the public's approval. Win the crowd & you win your freedom. Where as Commodus felt trapped by his own vulgarity & infamy. This is emphasized by the fact that Commodus baits him "then take it now", to which Maximus takes pleasure in repudiating. Defying him on every stand. Showing him to be a weak minded fool. Where as Maximus rules even in the dregs of slavery. Amazing film.
And looked as though at least one of the Praetorians already knew that somebody, maybe even himself and his fellow guardsmen, would have to someday put Commodus down!
It also meant that Commodus' name would not be honored after his dead, even if he died by natural causes at age, implying that he would not achieve greatness. And, according to their zeitgeist, there's very few worse things to say to a man. Moreover, even with maximus' family butchered, he on the other way was marching to be remembered as the saviour of Rome. In other words, a father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, would achieve much more honor than the self proclaimed emperor.
Sorry for your loss brother I lost grandfather recently aswell I got an idea of how it feels. Do your best to honor his legacy be like him keep your head up!!!
you'd be suprised at how many Roman Emperors were assasinated by their own praetorian guard. at one point in time being emperor of the Roman empire was probably the most dangerous job there was.
Fun fact, Magnus Samuelsson the swede who won worlds strongest man competition was actually offered to play this scene against Russel, but he declined for some Swedish programme instead. He thought that Gladiator wouldn't be such a successful movie.
A sign of respect, and a 'check yourself' to the Emperor. Also resentment from when Commodus ordered them to kill some of their own Soldiers.(in the Deleted Scene "they were loyal soldiers, Sire') They comment below mine is right on the money.
lucgh2007 ez DOUBLE TAP huh? 😂😂😂😂😂u funny man! But nah these were honorable days and somehwat honorable men- its not Maximus' character to say that. Today in 2018, there is no honor left, so its easy to say garbage like that.
Successful gladiators do make a name for themselves, and as such, take on a persona. Tigris might have killed many tigers in the colosseum, or maybe fought as ferociously as a tiger.
I love the look on Commodus' face when Maximus gains the upper hand in the fight, it's like he was expecting the gladiator would have killed him, yet I can't imagine how he thought a retired gladiator past his prime would have been more than a match for Maximus, a General in the Roman legions.
@@lh5125 Well not every fight (as I am sure you are aware) was a fight to the death. It was expensive training gladiators. Yes many still died but a lot more animals, prisoners, and Jews and Christians died in the arena compared to the number of gladiators who died there.
That actually happens when a person gets hurt and they are suprised so much that they bite down on their tongue and the blood from their tongue spills out of their mouth.

josh waters wrong lol. If you don’t know how to use a gun you won’t hit your target. If your opponent has a weapon you must engage and eliminate him using your gun before he reaches you. If you and your opponent have a gun the you must have more skill and strategy then him to win. Guns take no skill? Perhaps the same could be said for blades and axes. All you do is swish swish stab.
josh waters That’s the joke buddy. Also I can speak from experience in telling you that shooting glocks isn’t as easy as it looks. The first time I shot one I could barely hit a non-moving target from like 5 meters, moving targets would be very difficult.
That retired gladiator had a good strategy...daze and confuse with the sand kick, constant fast strikes to keep the enemy off guard, continue advancing to keep up the pressure, heavy blunt (but still sharp) attacks with the axe, slashing attacks with the sword, both good for dealing with different types of opponents.
Unusual figting style with sword and axe, but still better than sword and shield. Similar to what Kanwulf used in "Highlander" but he was first fighting with axe only later to wield sword. But of course his axe was crafted by Odin himself.
3:18 I always laughed at that quick cut to the crowd; particularly the dude holding the orange. Guy was so into the Gladiator fight that he didn't even know if he wanted to cheer or finish that orange in his hand LMAO. Slobbering all over the place & everything lol.
@@im1who84u Not likely. You see, the Praetorian Guard was not just any ordinary guard or soldier. They were the Emperor's personal guard, acting as Secret Services, had training and privileges beyond the normal military and were notorious in later dates for sometimes dealing with/threatening Emperors to do their will rather than the other way around. Emperor Commodus here was already severely lacking in respect from the people, he showed instable emotions (weakness) and used the Praetorians enough times for them to realize they're too important to him to just dispose of. If the Emperor started dealing with them, they'd be very likely to band together and overthrow the weak Emperor. Simply put, Commodus didn't have the guts nor respect according to his position. A classic "In charge, no leader" case.
@@Vikingr4Jesus5919 An excellent example would be the Praetorian Guard executing the Mad Emperor Caligula and replaced him with Claudius, who in the show I, Claudius is portrayed by Senator Gracchus's actor Derek Jacobi.

Maximus is the ultimate man, male, husband. We should all aspire to be like Maximus. Defence of the country, defend your family, and gave his life avenging the death of his family, ridding the country of a dictator. Easily my best movie ever. Saw it in 2000 when it first came out and many, many times since.
The lines they gave Comodus are just too predictable, they are designed to villify him and glorify Maximus. What Comodus should have said is: "It was you who went killing men only because my father asked you to. You didn't have a quarrel with these men, but you did it all the same. I did what I did because I had a quarrel with my father and because that made you a threat to me."
The long pause..... followed by ... Highness. Shows the character of Maximus. It's a lesson that some people never learn. The lesson is a simple one. Play by the rules....and win, with grace. Lead by example, not by dictat.

Nope Emperor soldiers killed him
Amen Riviera.
Very well said 👍 and completely true.

The fact That he dit not kill his enemy was in My eyes honerable

he says he only kills if he needs to. but he doesn’t take commands from commudus so he purposely waited for him to give the signal then chose not to kill
He wouldve refused any order than commodus gave
@@BikesandBoulders Disagree. Had Commodus indicated to spare the loser (thumbs up), I don't think Maximus would have then killed him just to spite Commodus. That would have alienated the crowd and given Commodus a pretext to execute him.
To everybody that’s talking about how Tigris gets stabbed in the foot but bleeds out of his mouth, did you not see him get whacked in the face with a shield right before it?
KhAoz It's bad editing.
Disturbed Editing was perfectly fine. Its people who are shit observers...
KhAoz ikr, he got whacked like 3 times
When he got hit with the shield the head (and body) went backwards, and Maximus immediately stabbed him in the foot, so, when Tigris leaned forward to take the axe out of his foot, he obviously bleeds from his mouth from the previous hit. Not bad editing at all! In fact, you can say that the director payed attention to the smallest detail right there. Perfect.
Also, he probably bit his tongue. IIt's pretty common to bite yourself if you've been heavily injured, which is why you bleed out of your mouth.

Who said he’s chubby? Yeah, he’s not ripped, but you can definitely see he wasn’t looking for aesthetics, just raw power and ate a lot for it. He’s still huge, if it was all fat, he’d look a lot different, you can see muscle definition in his arms. "The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end."
What an incredible line.
Even if Maximus was murdered, he knew that there were men of stoic character and sound judgment still in the world that would put an end to Commodus
Its a good line, because he meant aggrandising yourself making him to read between the lines.
I8 mo mo9

One of the best movies ever made.
"Imagine a king who fights his own battles , wouldn't that be a sight !! Lol
Where’s the king??
Thats troy. And in this case wouldd be Caesar .
They don't have a king. They have an emperor.
Alexander the Great
Valens, the glory hog. He even died right there, at Adrianople.

I always laughed at that quick cut to the crowd; particularly the dude holding the orange. Guy was so into the Gladiator fight that he didn't even know if he wanted to cheer or finish that orange in his hand LMAO. Slobbering all over the place & everything lol.
Ariel Jones LMFAO
Ariel Jones 0.25x speed
Hahaha I noticed that too
Ariel Jones HAHAHAHA. LOL. Well noticed.
"Maximus....Maximus the merciful" never gets old
"I will win the crowd"
+Rexofied My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius Decimus Maximus Meridius Decimus Decimus Meridius Maximus Meridius Maximus Decimus Maximus Maximus
Signs his name with an X.
Great characters, great dialogue, great score, great story - still, by far, the greatest movie of the past 25 years
Respectfully disagree. One of the best, for sure, but Lord of the Rings trilogy has to take the cake for me 😊
Maximus!!
Maximus!!
Maximus!!
I cant get enough of this movie.
Also troya was so good.
Love it how the Praetorian Guard nodded in respect for Maximus and let him pass.
I am sure that guard was dealt with later... and not in a pleasant way.
@@Vikingr4Jesus5919 Sounds like you know what you are talking about.
I am just a week-end TH-camr.
Thanks for the input.
@@im1who84u Yea, I love the history about the Romans. It's arguably one of the richest historical ages in Europe.
@@Vikingr4Jesus5919 An excellent example would be the Praetorian Guard executing the Mad Emperor Caligula and replaced him with Claudius, who in the show I, Claudius is portrayed by Senator Gracchus's actor Derek Jacobi.
Maximus vs Achilles would be the best fight ever .
And the shortest. Achilles would kick his ass
without the protection of the styx, it would be fair
Maximus vs. Hector would've been a dang good fight. Both great horsemen and swordsmen
@@mg19cal I think Hector would win that
Anton Dennig Achilles is supposed to be the greatest warrior that ever lived and literally invulnerable. Dude was killed with the help of literal deities.
My best favourite Movie ever, an eye of a man dropped tears for the first time a watched this, NICE JOB TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.
They sure as hell chose the right actor for playing the "psycho". He doesn't even need to try hard to look like he lost his marbles.
What Comodus should have said is:
"It was you who went killing men only because my father asked you to.
You didn't have a quarrel with these men, but you did it all the same.
I did what I did because I had a quarrel with my father and because that made you a threat to me."
“The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end.”
You are a lord? Of what? Yyou are dust.
The long pause..... followed by ... Highness. Shows the character of Maximus. It's a lesson that some people never learn.
The lesson is a simple one. Play by the rules....and win, with grace. Lead by example, not by dictat.
