The stealth approach! Lovely bit of sport for you on your lunch break. Good to see the rivers are reasonably healthy with trout life.

Great vid as always Paul. I run through swim's on my local river with a 4cm/5cm lure first. Then I run through with a 7cm Rapala and more often than not i'll get a decent fish on the large lure. It's strange why the big trout usually don't take my smaller baits. Saying that though, my PB 7lb 9oz Brown was had on a size 2 spinner. It's your older trout vids which got me into trout lure fishing a good few years ago now. Thanks mate.

Barry Cooper thats interesting mate . Ive been trying this method out on my local river too. not had much on the big lures as of yet but still giving it ago every now and then . The fox rage slick sticks SR 4cm are so good on the river . One of my favourite lures too use .

yeah great way of doing it pal. I never really take any of my larger perch lures but I keep going to try that myself. When we first went trout fishing years ago we were actually out on some canals perch fishing. We then jumped on the river and I had a decent sized crank on and straight away had a good trout. Thats what made us have a proper go at them, but we have since always used 3-5cm lures. good to hear you having some success pal and if we have only inspired you with the videos then all this has been worthwhile. cheers bud.

+M2DB I have only ever caught one or two trout on soft plastics, small kopyto's but the rapala floater and rapala countdown in CD5 and CD7 sizes in any type of rainbow trout pattern do the trick for me. I jiggle the rod tip about a lot using most cranks instead of a constant retrieve.

Barry Cooper all the lures i use are hard lure mate . Like i say my personal favourite is the fox rage slick stick SR 4cm . I am going to give the rapala a go see what i get .😁 ive also just bought a couple GUNKI lures a baby brown trout and a baby minnow they look great .

My favorite lure for chub, trout and perch is the duo spearhead ryuki 45s, the treble hooks replaced with single hooks

awesome video lol wish i saw this earlier haha. really helpful tips and i saw the 1st and 2nd video about this which also helped. my favourite lure to use in nz rivers or lakes are the rapalas especially the rap x slashbaits depending if there are decent trout around.

Great video Paul, Really enjoyed it.
I would like to give this type of fishing a go, besides I have had my eye on a nice drop shot rod for a while which I would be able to use for trout and Perch.
We all need a new Rod, Don't we lol.
    Cheer's Paul.

Rivers are closed for coarse fish from mid march to the 16th of June.

For me, I do very little pike fishing after March 15th. I might keep
going if it's still a bit cool and I am on lakes or canals. My own
personal feelings for pike are that from september to about march/april,
they are in super condition where I fish. Really pretty fish,
stocky/fat and their fins are usually perfect. After about April, when
they have spawned, they seem to be a bit tatty, skinny, bite marks,
grazes, cuts and so on and I don't enjoy catching them like this and i
try to leave them to rest a bit and get back in to top condition. But
the course river season starts on saturday this week (16th june) and i
will be fishing for pike, but most probably using smaller lures and only
really targetting small jack pike along with perch and maybe zander. I
probably won't really target pike on my bigger lures as much and i'll
see what the pike are like if i do and then decide from there.

We plan on livebaiting for fat perch and any pike that want them Got. a nice weir to play with, never fails to produce fish early season. Even bought a bait bucket with aerator just because lol

Ryan, just keep searching mate. That spot is higher up, shallower flowing water and so you seem to get a lot more fish, mostly smaller but they make good sport. Travel light, and keep trying new bits of river and figuring out where they live. As you've seen in the videos, if they are there you usually see them straight away. The larger fish might be a bit more elusive and not show so fast though.

Nice1 Paul i got some great advice from these vids 👍😀 i think i just need to get a more varied selection of lures all barr 1 of mines are all floating 50mm just different patterns i need some sinkers, this river is so like my local river mostly shallow but there's plenty deep pools to be got at i never realised how deep some of these pools where till i waded through them in the summer, i use a 5ft 6 rod which i love but i think the reel i got for it is too small 😞 its a Shimano Hyperloop 1000RB it goes great wi the wee rod but the action in the handle is hard to get used to when I'm retrieving the lure and although ive had a few fish i still haven't figured out how fast i should be retrieving so i might need to get a reel the next size up,ive missed more than ive caught as ive seen the fish come for my lures but turn away last sec or take but not stay hooked properly 😩 so now its just a case of waiting till march to get back out again.
I'll keep you updated but i cant believe its took me 35 years to find the fishing technique i love the most 😀 i bought a fly set up in the summer too n ive been out a few times but not caught anything n i got bored quite quick the only thing i liked was fishing on the move so i might sell my fly set up to put money towards some new lures and a bigger reel oh and a new net, i live in Edinburgh and now there is only 1 fishing tackle shop in the city and its just a mahoosive noise up going there especially bc I'm on a budget majority ott seeing all the stuff in a massive warehouse sized shop so i tend to go in and not have a look about lol i get what im needing and out i go dreaming of what i would buy, i was left a couple o grand in the summer so i was able to renew my gear got a couple o rods reels waders net etc but that money is long gone 😞 but hey ive went out on my own for 35 odd years and theres no better feeling than being out on the water wi a rod n reel in my hand it does wonders for my fragile state of mind lol
    Tight lines pal
    ✌👍💙🎣🙋
😲 Christ! Soz for the rant 😳😳 but can you tell me what kind of lure that was you caught that nice wee brownie around the 12/14 minute mark? I think i know the size as it looks like my 50mm lures but is it a floating or sinking lure?
Lastly i want to show you the size of my reel i was talking about and the only vid i have were you can see and judge the size of it is in a vid i made when i caught the biggest, heaviest fish ive ever caught on my local river but it was an eel and a fookin huge 1 at that, it had to be at least 3lb my rod nearly got pulled into the river as i was fishing wi a worm on the bottom n had the rod against a big tree log the video turned into a right laugh with me talking to a person called John which is really my wee brother n we call each other John after my late Papa died so when i was out on my own and catching and videoing i would talk to him even though he wasnt there i just liked noising him up as we never catch as much when we fish together, theres plenty of swearin (tourettes style😆) and just shock and excitement from me,I'm gonna put a link up here- th-cam.com/video/VnkjxeKw4ck/w-d-xo.html
I hope you have time to have a look its only a couple o minutes long but everyone ive shown it to had a good laugh at my expense obvs but the eel was humungous and i put it beside my rod n reel to show the size of the thing so i hope you can tell me if you think i need a bigger reel and once again i used my camera off my tablet so excuse my dodgy filming 😞
Take it easy pal n speak soon ✌👍💙🎣Craig 🙋

Why dont people fish for pike all year round? Reading the rules sounds like you can fish with lure spinner or worm just not for course fish. I know different areas have different rules but I read the rules for my area ... I'm confused.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Kev, you can't fish for any course fish from march 15th to june 15th on rivers. So that totally rules out pike fishing on rivers, plus other species like perch, bream, orach and so on which i think you understand. The rule on artificial lure, fly and worm is when the trout season starts, which is different in various parts of the country. In yorkshire it is something like 27th march to sept 30th or something, don't quote me exactly on that, and your area might be slightly different. So that's why you have seen a few trout videos recently from us. A great excuse to legally get back on rivers and fish flowing water. But as you also probably noticed, we are actually fishing trout rivers, not using the lure fishing rule to pretend to be trout fishing but actually pike or perch fishing which some people do, and thats wrong.
Then we have the "pike season" which isn't actually official. Lots of pike anglers only fish for pike between october 1st and 15th march and fish for other species the rest of the year. If you wish, you can fish for pike all year long on canals, ponds and lakes, just not that closed season on rivers.
For me, I do very little pike fishing after March 15th. I might keep going if it's still a bit cool and I am on lakes or canals. My own personal feelings for pike are that from september to about march/april, they are in super condition where I fish. Really pretty fish, stocky/fat and their fins are usually perfect. After about April, when they have spawned, they seem to be a bit tatty, skinny, bite marks, grazes, cuts and so on and I don't enjoy catching them like this and i try to leave them to rest a bit and get back in to top condition. But the course river season starts on saturday this week (16th june) and i will be fishing for pike, but most probably using smaller lures and only really targetting small jack pike along with perch and maybe zander. I probably won't really target pike on my bigger lures as much and i'll see what the pike are like if i do and then decide from there.
Hope that helps a bit mate, and yes i agree it's not very clear even on the EA site.

River Piker thanks.... if not been on the rivers and I'm gonna start Saturday (iv got local book) I'm only fishing small lures in comparison to most anyway. Thanks for the run down... I sort of understood it's just conflicting information online. Thanks for that .
