I have a cocker spaniel/shih tzu mix and he's had a few ear infections. He would fight me when I tried to clean his ears. This video was so very helpful! Chip & I thank you!
Thanks for your comment. No, Bailey doesn't get a lot of hair and wax build up. As she gets older (she'll be 6 in August) she does get more wax than before. I clean and pluck my dogs' ears about every 3 weeks now and that's enough to keep them clear.
@W3bkinzGirl519 To loosen ear wax you should massage the tube that you can see when you look into the ear and past your dog's ear flap. The liquid ear cleaning solution drips down into this tube. To loosen ear debris, massage the tube by massaging the skin on top of where this tube lies. Please feel free to comment again if I misunderstood any part of your question.
You're welcome. I pluck as far as I can see into her ear. The largest amount of hair tends to be in the upper 1.5 inches. I use my thumb and forefingers together, but if I find the hair too slippery, I use a pair of short blunt tweezers. For some reason, Bailey flinches when I pull with the tweezers but not if I use my fingers. You can lightly dust some baby powder into the ears to make the hair less slippery, too. Try hiding your materials and sitting next to Keeda before you get them out.
Great video Kim, thanks for the info. We were blessed with a new family member, Talulah a 2 month old Goldendoodle. Mother was golden and father poodle she seems more golden than poodle. She is a moosh and already fits right into our family. Can you recommend a good brush for these wonderful dogs?
Kim, My first goldendoodle puppy has quite a bit of built up in her ears and yelps when she moves them too much. Would it be safe to try cleaning them out or should she be checked for infection first? Thank you

Thanks for asking me that question, but I'm just a dog owner without veterinary training. Given what you said about your puppy, my first inclination would be to clean her ears. But since she's also yelping when she moves them too much, I would take her to the vet before doing anything. One of my goldendoodles has much more sensitive ears than the other and she is the same one that has gotten ear infections. She's never made pain noises during an infection unless I'm poking around in her ear. Best wishes!
Very informative! Thanks for sharing your experience with this subject.
Thank you!
