- "It's exciting, it's graceful, it's got gorgeous tunes... it's got everything really."
As cellist Steven Isserlis prepares to perform with us, he tells us about Saint-Saëns' cello concerto no.1 and why it is the first concerto most young cellists learn.
Hear him play it with us on 26 January at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.

Cellists, was Saint-Saëns' cello concerto no.1 the first concerto you learnt? if not, what was it?
Haydn!
Haydn, kabalevsky, Lalo, then saint saens
Bach suite No.1 for cello but on violin
I learned the first three pages of Kabelevsky and then this was the first full cello concerto I learned!
elgar!
His cello sonatas are indeed fabulous and very worthy of performance.
A+ Classical Hair
Must get good resonance out of that stuff
But the funniest orchestral piece for solo cello are the Roccoco variations. Tchaikovsky in his infinite melodicism did have a sense of humour
Watching this, I have to admit to myself that I would only be kidding myself to say I have ever learned music.
Congratulations on 100K Subscribers! Love this channel.

Do tutors decide what their students learn , or do students request their own selections?
Both, depends on teacher and student. I was mostly left free to choose, sometimes suggested what to play, sometimes suggested not to play something yet.
For God sake man play something 🇦🇺
Look up his name and listen......
