Madonna had gays on stage with her at a time when she was the biggest star in the world, and when most gay men had a stigma against them that was further exacerbated by the AIDS epidemic. I'm a historian specializing in the 18th c. and I talk about this all the time! They're not perfect, of course, but specifically Madonna herself? Damn-- the neckline is perfect, size/proportion of the panniers are great, the style of the gown she's wearing is based off of a very specific midcentury French style, and you can tell she's wearing stays/undergarments that give her the proper shape. So much respect for artistic expression when it's obviously backed up by research

Probably one of the best performances ever. That woman is truely an Artist. The whole Marie-Antoinette vs Vogue was a genious idea. That woman is culturally in a very high level.
The lip sync isn't a problem cause the whole performance was like a scene from a movie and a microphone would've ruin it. Madonna is the peak of pop performances.
She's just mediocre in my opinion. She is so weak vocally that she couldn't sing that easy song live. She built a career off of being controversial, there no real talent to see here.
@@naurking5388 It doesn't take an advanced course in vocals to see she is mediocre. There is a clear difference between artists like whitney, mariah and artist like madonna. 1 - PERFECT choreography; 2 - absolutely amazing costumes -- not just for madonna but all of the dancers/characters; 3 - the diversity among her dance crew: we have asian, latino, black, probably all (or most) gay men bringing the ballroom/vogue scene to one of the most important stages in pop music; 4 - referencing marie antoinette, the queen of opulence, carelessness and youthness; 5 - not being afraid of sexuality and being playful and tongue-in-cheek about it; 6 - madonna at one of her peaks of beauty and influence; 7 - the amazing exit with her becoming the one who watches the audience; 8 - nikki and donna nailing every step of the way; 9 - the theatrical feel of the whole performance: this is not supposed to look like a music video or a pop concert -- this is musical theater, camp, broadway. 10 - how everyone on stage not only has a chance to shine but is also there for a REASON. all of them actuallycontribute to the storytelling of the piece. 11 - the fact that all of this was done in 1990, when she was one of the fery few artists who pushed the boundaries between pop music, sex and art. this performance is one of the many reasons why she's the GOAT in pop music. loved this since i was a kid and will love it forever.
This is also more about the movie “Dangerous Liaisons” Madonna is even wearing one of the dresses Glenn Close wore for that movie. They were on tour in France, and they were playing charades, and one of the charades was “Dangerous Liaisons” Madonna said it was very Vogue.
@@cjma4832 1990s Madonna is so iconic: Justify My Love and Vogue singles and videod, Blond Amibition Tour, VMA's 1990, 1993, 1998, Erotica, Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light albums, Sex book, Evita... all in the same decade!
It's incredible how this woman is far away forward her time. The Fans and the Haters don't get her at all. Everybody talking about lip syncing and no one understands what she's doing there. She wanted to do a new Video for Vogue. A live video in one take, without editing. It was the first time someone tried to do that. The performance was used like a "single" for her video collections and. A celebration of MTV and Madonna's Career. That was a perfect performance, but was not meant to be a live show, it was meant to be a dancing painting in form of a live video. That's so fucking crazy and amazing. She was at the highest top of her game.
in the Balls of NYC (where vogueing came from}, lip syncing is what the performers did. The dancing and attire were the attraction. This performance follows that tradition. New outfits for the next themed Ball. Pose the tv show is a look into that scene and era. It is an excellent show. They should be starting a new season soon.
People complaining that she isn't singing live have completely missed the point. In the Ballroom scene NO ONE sings. Madonna lip synching (hence no microphone) to her own tune is both clever, and a tribute to the club culture where Vogueing was born. Trivia : Madonna used the same dress used by Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons.
Like someone stated earlier, Madge confused the straights. Unless you competed in balls or attended them as a spectator, this was something new. They didn't know how to react.
@@mjl11 who? Have either of these music groups been played on the radio to where everyone has checked out this mj or prince regardless of whether or not they wanted to?
Were the fans pre-recorded? The sync would be incredibly hard to pull off. All you would need to do is mic the thing properly. You can hide quite a lot in those corsets ;) I was hearing voices come in and out of double tracking in a really interesting way. I suspect that when Madonna said “pose” that was live though much of it was synced. This performance is probably the best thing that Madonna ever did and the audio production is a fascinating part of it.
This performance set a new standard that night. As a gay person, it was pretty much the first performance I can remember where gay people were held up as beautiful, magical. According to Kevin Stea (the dancer at 0:35), Madonna, Niki and Donna never all 3 caught the fan in any rehearsal. The only time all 3 caught the fan was for this performance. Dancers said they were shaking for this part before the show.
This is true. Jose told me Madonna drove everyone crazy in rehearsals doing this moment over and over and refused to drop it from the performance! The dancers clap with playful attitude right after that moment like an inside joke for them finally getting it right!
This is the greatest choreographed live performance of all time. Raunchy and elegant at the same time. Artistic and comedic. I can't think of a greater act that I have seen on stage. No one has been able to pull it off since.
She knew it long before that. Perhaps not in the sense that someone can "objectively" realise they are setting a precedent that will be undefeated for decades to come. But she was certainly determined to rule the world - and made it reality. That is the power of Madonna.
The best thing is taking a popular song (and video for the 90s) at an awards show to create an original performance with original costuming and semi reminiscent choreography of the music video amd make a one of a kind performance. This wasn't recreated. This was original. And that is what makes Madonna part an icon in the last 40 years of music, video, dance, and persona.
Yes! I have enjoyed her since 1985. Madonna has influenced so many music artists even today. The fun of Madonna’s career has always remained unpredictable performances live on stage and music choices for her to explore . She represents and inspires people that appreciate her all over the world. Love her or hate her ... the woman is a force to be reckoned with. The media has for years screwed with the truth versus fiction and she’s still here. Nobody can take that from her.

It’s surprisingly historically accurate and just beautiful. I love the robes anglaises and the powdered wigs. Hi Joey
YES
1 - PERFECT choreography;
2 - absolutely amazing costumes -- not just for madonna but all of the dancers/characters;
3 - the diversity among her dance crew: we have asian, latino, black, probably all (or most) gay men bringing the ballroom/vogue scene to one of the most important stages in pop music;
4 - referencing marie antoinette, the queen of opulence, carelessness and youthness;
5 - not being afraid of sexuality and being playful and tongue-in-cheek about it;
6 - madonna at one of her peaks of beauty and influence;
7 - the amazing exit with her becoming the one who watches the audience;
8 - nikki and donna nailing every step of the way;
9 - the theatrical feel of the whole performance: this is not supposed to look like a music video or a pop concert -- this is musical theater, camp, broadway.
10 - how everyone on stage not only has a chance to shine but is also there for a REASON. all of them actuallycontribute to the storytelling of the piece.
11 - the fact that all of this was done in 1990, when she was one of the fery few artists who pushed the boundaries between pop music, sex and art.

Not sure whether all the exact C18th Clothing would be available from the same source though! The clothing came from the film Dangerous Liaisons
Agree, but what made this so revolutionary back in the day was how femme the gay dancers were. She told them to just be themselves and just own it.
I'm a fan. I remember dancing to this in clubs as a teenager. It's big enough to be remembered in pop history. I will be voguing with my grandchildren
i just discover it today im 22 and i really feel madonna is a legend i love the song iconic and amazing that was good u dance when u are teen i think thats a great memory for u and other teens
You must be a cool mom/grandmom then. I wish I had a relative like you
@@QWERTYUIOP-wu6ht Thank you. I use to ask my sons friends when they stayed over night, what is their favourite track, song and I would put it on and turn it up. No problems with behaviour and I hoped it made them feel at home. Music can change your mood and uplift your spirits.
This was based on a very famous movie from the time, Liaisons Dangereux (Cruel intentions)
I doubt I’m going to have kids but the thought of voguing with my grandchildren is enough to make me suddenly have a giant family
I loved life in the artistic, inclusive and hugely creative New York City of the 1980s and 1990s. But I was a Madonna hater. Nearly 35 years later I'm looking at this performance, and realizing that it is sheer genius, and that it totally stands the test of time. It would dominate any "diva"'s performance today. By a mile. Bravo, Madonna, dancers, and choreographer! Phenomenal!
Madonna is a force.

Can we just say '' VVe Told You So '' ?

Это-то и страшно. Похоже вкусы как были дешёвыми, так и остались.)
Def true except i do think there’s modern artists who compare to this. Chappell Roan seems like she has the capability, for example.
This is the definition of Iconic.
I would call it the definitive iconic performance for Madonna. It’s my favorite song and performance.
I'm sorry but this performance is perfection. Even 30yrs later. I have goose bumps each time I watch it. Wow
SAME!
Beyoncé, that shit,can not compare with the pure talent MADONNA
I'm not really a Madonna fan but no one could ever say that Madonna is NOT a legend or an icon because she is. She's an incredible performer and has amazing songs. Maybe not the best live voice but it doesn't matter, still better than what most could ever do.
QUEEN
I think y'all don't realise how different the game was before the internet and wide social media. My main thang was taping songs off the radio cos we was ghetto skint.. Butt that was the skill to get it clean.
Madonna can sing live along real choreography the others can't th-cam.com/video/gmktAUXTMLY/w-d-xo.html
She’s NOT a legend. She can’t sing and she can’t dance. She’s hype and production, nothing more
ILovemyOrchids, so this performance right here, thats not a great, intricate choreography?
@@ILoveMyOrchids whether you agree that she should be or not, she IS a legend simply because of her cultural impact
Leaked footage of Marie Antoinette and her homies at the club lmao 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sylvia-Novella Underwood lol

LOL!
Let them eat cake!
Courtesy of TMZ 😂😂😂😂😂
This is a high quality live music video... not just a stage performance of the song.
