In this episode, we stayed at a charming boutique called Samindra Villa in Kandy, travelled by tuk tuk to an elephant orphanage, experienced a Ceylon tea plantation and factory then visited one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka, the temple of the tooth. I visited the elephant orphanage,the temple of the tooth relic and many other beautiful places in Sri Lanka this year . I loved every bit of it n the Sri Lankans are extremely kind,hospitable and simple people.Srilanka will have a piece of my 💓 forever.I promise to come back again..lots of love from India

I lived here for 7 years born, raised and schooled here, i really miss it ,wish i had the chance to live in Kandy a little longer.
My understanding is that the “Cinnamon” from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the best. In the US, we can only get Vietnamese/Thai and only rarely Ceylon Cinnamon. Thanks for the new video and your recipes. Have fun, be happy & eat well
Yes, you're right Robert, sadly a lot of cinnamon is also fake even if it looks real. A staggering difference in aroma!

Robert Rudek Hello! What you said was right! The reason behind the Portuguese arrival to Sri Lanka was the Cinnamon. During early 1500s, Cinnamon from Ceylon was so popular in Europe. Muslim | Arabic merchants charged a hefty price for Cylon Cinnamon. In order to get that business in to their hand and make spread Catholicism in the east, they came here and eventually took over the Cinnamon business to their hand.
Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinamomum Zylanicum) a plant indigenous to Sri Lanka is a moderately size bushy ever green tree. Cinnamon grown and produced in Sri Lanka has acquired long standing reputation in the international market due to its unique, quality, colour, flavour and aroma. The name Ceylon Cinnamon derived from the former name of Sri Lanka is a very established geographical indication for Cinnamon.
What you get from Thailand /Vietnam is called casia.

Public transportation system is one of the worse things about Sri Lanka, causing so much unnecessary pain to the locals everyday who just want to get to work

Not many people visit the tea factories. This is actually my first time seeing the work that goes into production.
And that baby elephant crying😭 I guess he's one of the orphaned ones. Elephants are very intelligent creatures and they probably have great emotional capacity.. I've never seen an animal actually tearing like that
Yes it breaks your heart how these beautiful creatures have been treated around the world, by mankind. I'm glad things are changing but still a long way to go.

Thank you Chef for this beautiful eye Kandy video - I enjoyed it tremendously - it was worth the wait - your cutaways are excellent - your audio where the 87 elephants are right behind you in the street is very effective and in sync - can't wait for your next upload on this incredible location - making serious plans to visit and enjoy Sri Lanka soon - will definitely want to book in the same villas and private establishment / hotels you stayed in. Please tell which time of the year is best and how cost effective is Sri Lanka. Lol all the best! 😎 👍
Thanks so much Abe,. December to March is suppose to be the best weather. We went end of July/August and it was perfect everyday. I suggest travelling by train once you get there and ask your hotels to book it for you. The Samindra villa cost us $65US per night, which is ridiculously cheap for what you get. Sri Lanka is great value, and can be super cheap but there are tourist traps where they will over charge you, so do research first. Enjoy!
Recipe30 Thanks for the info. Did you encounter any problems while shooting stills or video, such ss paying to be able to shoot at tourist destination? I understand that in India it happens at certain tourist attractions.

@joel Booking seats in advance is a real mess here as there's no online reservation system in place. People take advantage of this and buy as many tickets as possible and sell them for a higher price than published. The train heading back towards Colombo is usually less crowded and should be able to get a couple of seats.
Oh really, I think we also had a public holiday in the mix. I went two days in advance to book, but still nothing. We even tried to buy overpriced tickets, but couldn't get those either. Thanks for your explanation Ziyad. Next time I'll be prepared.
I have seen the tooth as a child when I visited while my dad was employed as a presidential advisor. It was a special viewing and we were accompanied by Upal a minister for newspapers I think and Laith who was another minister. The tooth was the size of a finger and a deep yellow in color and pointy. It was too large to be a human tooth but could have been some carving.

@@recipe30 After watching your video and a couple of others, you guys brought back some memories. I did some research on the tooth yesterday and found that the Portuguese had captured it, crushed it, burned it and threw the ashes into the sea. The Buddhists of SL claim that it was saved through some miraculous effort that a blue lotus rebirthed the tooth. So this might have been a replacement that someone made perhaps for the one that was lost

it's a tooth from the buddha him self brought from india in early days
it is a relic that the Buddhist community worship and we believe it to be a tooth of Lord Buddha.

You need to book the train ticket at least two to three weeks ahead. By the way, wonder how did you find the climate in Sri Lanka?
Really, that long! Wow, I'll be ready next time. It was 29C each and everyday during that time of year, very comfortable but may be a little hot for some. We had no rain at all.
@@recipe30 By the way, if you don't want to a book an intercity train with a seat, you can get a ticket and travel anytime you want. But those trains can be crowded and you may never get to sit. It's good that you found the climate comfortable. It's way too humid for me (especially Colombo), even though I was born and raised in Sri Lanka.
