The Philippines is an interesting country but could be a challenge to explore if you're a novice tourist. I'll try to simplify this for y'all. If you want the modern city life with a Filipino flavor, you go for BGC or Cebu city. If you want the nicest white sand beaches or go whale watching or island hopping, go to Palawan and the Visayas or Siargao if you want to surf. If you seek food adventure, go up North in Luzon or down South in Mindanao. Historical sites are everywhere but the best preserved spots are in Vigan and Intramuros.

In Visayas, a lot of them don't even want to hear Tagalog, haha! They are happy if you speak English, and they're good at it, too. Tagalog is the way to go.

Filipinos speak English so well because we are colonize by the Americans for so many years, the Americans introduced to us the first public education so the Filipinos speak English, and the medium of instruction in our sch are mostly English. Your guide the filipino girl cannot explain well. She is not well informed about Philippine History. Just saying. Also Philippines have also local dialects not only Bisayan language.it depends upon the Region..We speak Tagalog the national language, Ilocano, Bicolano, ka Pangpangan etc. focus lng siya sa Bisaya , Bisaya kasi siya hehehe. Just saying.

In general, most Filipinos speak English well because the language has been integrated in many aspects of Filipino lives. The newspapers, textbooks, medicines, food information, etc all are in English. College educated Filipinos used to speak a level of Spanish until the 1980's when the 1987 Constitution removed Spanish from the higher ed curriculum.
But I agree with you about his guide. She doesn't seem to know much about her own country. But I can see she's trying her best. 😃
