    "Sound like an owl on crack"
    Yes, I'm serious. That's my voice teachers metaphor about singing with an open throat.
    I think it's working, 'cause I definitely sound like a sick owl...

    My teacher told me to sit like a dog, then pant like a dog, then he told me to stand with my hands against a wall and push like i were taking a shit. Then i were put on some vibrating bed, which would 'massage my lungs' while i did some breathing exercises.
    After roughly 7 lessons that cost a fucking big pile of money, i had learned nothing, and i stopped showing up for lessons .. ! *This is what truly happened!*

    My teacher didn't use an unusual way to describe how to do forward placement, but at the moment we're working on my transitions combined with forward placement and what she said regarding vocal cracking in my transition area was hilarious, she told me that it's ok to sound like Tarzan for a while just as long as I'm keeping my air flowing out fully.

    I am an amateur opera and Art Song singer, and I really enjoy your awesome tips! Forward resonance can be pretty hard to maintain with a totally open throat (tightening in the muscles is such a huge problem for me...) and I've found the exercise you demonstrate here to be extremely helpful. I'm having some trouble transitioning from chest voice to head voice, so I'll watch your video on that, too! There's so much confusing and conflicting information on opera singing. You're very straightforward, though. Thanks for that!! ;D

    Hi Dan,
    Thanks for this lesson! Patsy Rodenburg advises to speak "above the eye line". What helps me is to imagine a line just above my eyes and then aim for that when i speak. Having an Oktavist/True Bass type of voice, this imagery really helps my spoken voice move almost 4 octaves up! Improves melody naturally and makes me more understandable to others.
    Love your work Dan!
    Cheers & greetings from Melbourne!

    I, too, like to sing art songs and arias. There seems, to me, that there is also a head space where placement feels like it is resonating from the cranium... of course that is just imagery, but it tends to produce an open sound in the higher part of my range... up to a high A... I am a tenor but if I try to sing higher, I tense up. I will try bending my knees next, which I learned in another of your videos. Thank you for all the help you have given me.

    Hey Dr. Dan, thanks a lot for all those videos you put here on youtube. They do help a lot! I got a question though about forward placement. What exactly happens anatomically to create those different resonances? I'm currently trying to play around a bit with my voice to see what is possible (like trying to see how it sounds if I try and keep TA dominant when going high or CT dominant when going low, so I get better sense of how to produce different qualities in my voice when wanted or needed), so I wonder how would one go and create different resonances and what is even possible that is independent of other stuff the singer can/should do (like twang or CT/TA muscles).
    Thanks again for all the content, hope you find the time for a quick answer :)

    Thanks! Good explanation. Yeah, this topic can confuse many of us because it describes a metaphorical feeling that is very subjective. The weirdest I heard is a teacher saying he almost can feel the voice at the back of his head as if wanting to get out at the back if he has a mouth at the back.. 😂 my goodness, that convoluted my brain 😆. In my lifetime, I never experienced such sensation either when talking or singing.. so I felt a bit insecure that why I don’t feel that way. Maybe I’m doing it wrong.
    So there’s that real disconnect.. it is very subjective feeling.😅

    I can't get my placement and support to work together. If I place my sound forward, my throat constricts and there isn't a smooth transition between bridges. if I open up my throat and get a more hollow feeling down in the chest cavity, my sound gets too airy and heavy to do anything with it. any tips?

It seamed like I was recovering when I had to be a monitor for a summercamp for two weeks and i had to sing almost every day. Three weeks later my voice still don't recovers and feels very breathy. I can only sing high if i mix a lot with head voice but then the voice becomes even breathier. Do you think practicing this exercice over here will help me?

I feel my lips vibrating and teeth feeling vibration. is that right? also my voice sounds like brandy (pop singer) when I sing yaah yaah, like to encourage chord closure, it sounds like her. then when I sing it do. can we sound like other singers sometime? or similar in some way? can I post a video to you? I keep feeling like my old lesson from teacher they kept making sing in chest voice and not in mix voice so it wasn't doing nothing for chord closure. I am trying to sing forward and have better chord closure to.

      By soft, the people you have been talking to probably mean breathy. It’s something I personally have been struggling with in singing.
      Don’t try to make your voice scratchy or deeper, singing in your mask makes your singing clearer and therfore ‘less soft’.

    Hi Dr Dan, thanks for the video, I really wished I watched this when I first began singing. I'd like to mention though that I actually suffer from Muscle Tension Dysphonia (I've watched your other video about it too) and what happens with the condition is that sitting on my throat (metaphorically) hurts like crazy so I documented myself including the tongue positions, the lips, teeth, vowels, consonants, notes, etc helped me understand this placement. Experimenting throughout the day and what you mentioned is exactly what I do! But because of this condition, do you think I might have learned a lesson from it? I know it might sound weird but do you think that this condition is actually teaching me how to properly project my sound, pronounce lyrics, and to sing properly, etc?
    I prefer your answer because you know so much and I trust you with opinions than anyone else on TH-cam. Thanks again, looking forward to your reply!

      Thank you for your answer. I also have vocal nodules on top of it so it will be a long and harsh journey for me in addition to relearning the correct coordination and developing motor skills from it. Your channel really exaggerates the importance of vocal health, so thank you for spreading the awareness. I had a good voice until I yelled and trained like I was 'on tour'.

    OMG! how can people sing with backward placement! It hurt me to do that. Yikes! I guess i have learned from the beginning to place my tongue touching my front lower teeth, has trained me not to roll my tongue backwards.

    • @thomasmartin9778
      @thomasmartin9778 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it hurt, you're doing it wrong (although it's absolutely right that you should leave the tongue to sit in a forward position). You have to sing extremely lightly on single notes throughout your range with a kind of moaning quality - which opens the backspace - and then on sirens. Brightness - the so-called forward placement - comes with an open, relaxed throat, not by trying to manufacture brightness with nasality which is usually what happens with the admonition to forward-placement. The singer's ring is a laryngeal event, although it can be felt in the face and behind the eyes (when singing louder and when you're good at it). It feels and sounds very bright at higher volumes compared to the level initially required to develop co-ordination but at that low level, it isn't so bright. Over time, it becomes intuitive to "lean-in" to those initially rather dull notes with more volume as they become secured and the ring starts to emerge.
      Even when teachers recognise the distinction between mask (sympathetic vibration of the face) and nasality - which they often do not - they usually fail to emphasise this distinction in their instruction. Dr Dan doesn't demonstrate good back placement in this video, so it's a bit of a straw-man: decent forward placement IS superior to terrible backwards placement with the tongue pulled back and the larynx clamped.
      I ruined my voice singing with nasal resonance and subsequently rebuilt it by aiming the sound into a deeper, more pharyngeal place and I've seen the same pattern emerge with my students.
      This is my experience but it's also the finding of a couple of studies (Titze and another by Sundberg if I recall) that nasal resonance plays no significant role in healthy singing.

      I acknowledge that Dr Dan doesn't suggest that we should sing with nasality. I'm just saying that, to an untrained singer, it's not a sufficiently clear distinction and it's one that ought to be made. Because the most obvious interpretation of the instruction is to use some degree of nasality.

    I tried the exercise but why do I feel the buzzing in my nasal cavity instead of my lips? Am I doing something wrong? I know when I talk that my voice is also nasally which I'm trying to learn how to fix. At the same time I'm trying to improve my singing voice. Thank you for any help you can offer me and I love your videos.

      NG can be helpful in establishing a forward placement. But you must use a siNG as opposed to a suNG.

    Hi Dr. Dan, I’ve always been told that when singing I should send my voice towards the soft palate “ back of the mouth “. Is that incorrect ?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ultimately, there is no 'right or wrong!' However, I do recommend developing a habitual forward placement because it is far more efficient over the long run.

    Dear Dr. Dan, thanks for your very nice video, elucidating several aspects of "vocal placement", explaining it as an image, rather than an acoustical phenomenon, used for pedagogical purposes.
    Could you please explain if the term MASK is also an image (related to vibrational sensations in the face) or a concrete anatomical structure, as so many people assume ?
    In other words, since it appears that contemporary scientific knowledge neglects the role of the sinuses as effective sound resonators, how could the MASK be justified ?
    Thanks !!

    • @cyclophonica
      @cyclophonica 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot, Dr Dan. I teach music acoustics at the university (in Brazil) and studied with prof. Sundberg in Sweden, who has produced a lot of scientific knowledge about singing voice. I fully agree with you, and congratulate for your wise and artistic contribution to voice teaching.
      I think that it is important to distinguish a "Symbolic Image" from a physical phenomenon. From what you say and from what I got in other sources, I would describe the "mask" as the "sensitive and vibrating structure of the face" in voice production.
      Interestingly, I recently learned that the word PERSONAGE originates from "per"+"sonare" , referring to the sounding of the voice in the mask (from ancient theatrical drama) ... All the best!
