  • This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we're going back to the 90s to discuss the mega multi starrer 'Hum" directed by Mukul S. Anand. Joining Abbas and Urjita for the episode is stand up comic, corporate slave and Mumbai local train enthusiast Varun Nair. It's a polarising episode to say the least. Topics discussed include: The experience of Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth and Govinda sharing the screen, the jumma chumma song and why it's problematic despite being a banger, the ever expanding plot of this film, the iconic frames and visual language, Danny's impactful villain and much more.

Abbas is the man !! A true cinephile who appreciates masala the way it should be. Luv his candor and comic quips. Usually, Urjita is bang on with her banter with Abbas but, unfortunately she will never be able to get or understand the filmi goosebumps one gets when you see Amitabh's Tiger shuffling his hair to get into beast mode😅 !!

I don't normally like it when one host/guest overpowers the conversation, but glad Abbas dominated this episode. Hum is definitely 'vibes'. It's too long and has hundreds of issues, but it was still a class apart from other 90s movies from a general movie-watching perspective. The bomb defusion tactics in the climax, duplicate Kader Khan's eczema, the randomness of having tanks and helicopters at the docks.... ye sab toh deserves a separate discussion.

I completely understand Abbas point. But urijita is more genz and doesn't understand star power and 80 and 90's bollywood. She tries to compare today's bollywood with old movies. For example what is ok today in a movie might not be ok in movies after 10 years.

I totally get Abbas' comment on vibes. This movie is pure nostalgia. Combines several genres/themes in a large canvas with a stellar cast. I wish they had shortened/ removed Govinda-Shilpa and duplicate Kader khan track. This movie would have been more engaging. Rajinikanth's Baashha improves upon it. Regardless, this is a great film :) Keeping it in early 90s, can you do Subhash Ghai's Saudagar?

Mukul S Anand died too early! He was just brilliant! I saw it in theatre when it was released and it was just amazing. You cannot get same vibes on small screen.

This movie is so much nostalgia. This was the first movie i saw on vhs. And rewatched several times. It was stylish for it's time. Iconic.

Hum is an iconic film in another way. Rajinikanth remade Hum in Tamil with the name 'Bashaa' with some modifications in script & it became the most iconic Rajini film ever. Rohit Shetty's 'Dilwale' also had reflections of Hum & Bashaa. After Bashaa, many Southern films follow the template of Bashaa even today.

1 - Hum is a great example of a big scale cinema, a cinema which builds its own universe and takes the viewer on a journey into it. Mukul Anand was one of those directors who could create such an universe in his films. Even in a flop like Trimurti he manages to show us a different world. Subhash Ghai had that talent too. In current lot there are hardly any writers or directors who can imagine such a big scale universe.

At the onset, I want to congratulate to the whole team of “Has It Aged Well?” podcast especially the hosts, Abbas and Urjita who are knowledgeable and endearing. You guys are doing the great job of bringing back alive the old gems of Bollywood and being the 80s kid I truly wait for the new episodes.

Hum, was the peak bollywood commercial cinema of 90s. Totally riding on star power, with amazing music, comedy, some well mounted action shots..Watching it the first time even as a 8 year old was just exhilirating.

Govinda had Swarg in 1990, which was a huge hit... and lets not forget his Street Dancer fame through Ilzaam... it wont be wrong to say Govinda was a star BY then... by 1992, after HUm and Shola aur Shabnam, Govinda was BIG

Mukul Anand was a great visionary director. It's unfortunate that his last movie DUS (with Sanjay Dutt and Salman) could never get released. Otherwise we could have seen a Pathan styled action movie in 1997.

  • @lelu810

This movie was polished and made into tamil movie called Basha by Rajnikanth mid 90's

Watched HUM after i saw it being the movie to be discussed on HIAW this week. Great episode, but they missed discussing how bhabhi is thrown in the lake, which short circuits the detonator and saves her from the Bomb. Science beeya**h

  • @chandermotwani3493

Mukul Anand was a very Stylish Filmmaker his framing of shots were too good. Do watch Agneepath which was again made by Mukul Anand inspired from Brian De Palma's Scarface 🤘🏻🎥🎬💯
