  • This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we're covering our first Mani Ratnam film by dialing it back to the early 00's and discussing the multi starrer 'Yuva'. To discuss the film with Abbas and Urjita is Quizzer (Kvizzer), comedian and Mani Ratnam superfan, Kumar Varun. The trio discuss KV's experience of watching the film twice on the same day, why this is perhaps Abhishek Bachchan's best performance, the splendid screenplay and visuals which may be at odds with the film's lofty idealism, and whether it qualifies as top tier work by Mani and AR Rahman. (the answer may surprise you)
KV also gives us his top 5 Mani Ratnam films and how his college days in Chennai shaped his love of cinema.

The excitement & detail with which KV narrates the colour palettes details, characterisations, why setup in Kolkata, just shows his passion. True fanboy of real Indian cinema ❤️

58:46 Yuva was supposed to be made without any songs. For the longest time it was in the news that Yuva won't have any songs composed by A.R.Rahman; Mani Ratnam had said that it was an uphill task for him to think of ways to picturize songs and that's why he decided to do away with them for this film, but at the last minute he changed his mind. Perhaps due to the paucity of time they didn't hire a proper lyricist, and every time a situation like this arises, Rahman invites Mehboob to write the lyrics. Mehboob is an out of work lyricist, for good reasons, but also a close friend of A.R.Rahman, so Rahman always tries to help by offering him some work. That has been the case since the 90's and the situation continues to be the same. Even recently Mehboob wrote the lyrics of Heropanti 2 and the hindi version of Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1, A.R.Rahman being the composer in both films.

Every episode, urjita says that she was 6 when she first saw the movie. She saw just too many movies in that one year.

52:00 How ironical it is, that for the longest time jokes have been made about South Indian movies being unrealistic even though their stories and characters are always rooted in reality. Rani Mukherjee was playing an uneducated woman of rural background and yet came across as extremely prim and proper. I had the exact same thought as Kumar Varun when i saw Meera Jasmine eating her food during that song; it felt very real. It feels like filmmakers and actors in South India are willing to go the extra distance in order to bring authenticity to their work, unlike Bollywood actors who are unwilling to step out of their comfort zone and they also care about their image a bit too much. You will also notice a difference in the picturization of the song Fanaa in Yuva and Yaakai Thiri in Aayutha Ezhuthu (Tamil version), with the Tamil version being bolder and wilder.

She was on point as a Bengali woman. They don't look, dress, or act clumsily just because they are uneducated. A poor Bengali wife is usually still very neatly turned out.

Please cover Anjali. It's one of Mani Ratnam's lesser known movies. It's special as it his only one made for children and has some special effects.

Fun fact: Yuva's kolkata portion of Abhishek was shot in Chennai and the Madhavan's portion in the tamil version was shot in Mumbai. Felt like sharing especially since KV loved the authenticity of Kolkata's depiction :p Most Mani Ratnam films have such crazy trivias! Someone pls share this with KV ❤

Michael’s friend Trilok was played by Abhinav Kashyap who 6 year later made the mega blockbuster Dabangg. He once again reunited with his Yuva co-star Sonu Sood and Om Puri.

Being a KV fan, absolutely LOVED him on the show. We NEED to bring him back. However, I have a few things to mention and I sincerely apologize if that hurts anyone's feelings. I am really trying to add some constructive feedback here -
    1. Not sure if Hindi is Urjita's second or third language but it would be really helpful if she could pay attention to improve her Hindi skills, especially when talking about actors (male/female), directors, or anyone related to a film they are discussing. Hearing, "isne", "usne", "iski", "uski" when she talks about anyone from Nasiruddin Shah to Shahrukh Khan, to Farah Khan, to anyone and everyone, was appalling and difficult to go through! Please speak in English if Hindi is not coming easily to you.
    2. Inserting "funny" comments forcefully just to make a point, and interrupting a guest when they are talking also seems pretty juvenile. We all can't be Cyrus and pull that off like a champion. So please refrain from that, unless that actually adds any value to the discussion!
    3. This was my favorite podcast after Cyrus says and Vartalab on this platform, but I really hope that both hosts can do an equally good job. When doing a show like this, you need hosts who are fans of movies of all times, and not of a certain time period. What was the point of bringing a Gen Z (almost) who never watched any of the movies when the actually released and can't make a proper comparison whether it has aged well or not! Watching an old film now and deciding whether it goes with the current time is NOT how you should do it. See how amazing KV's inputs were because he watched the film you were discussing exactly when it released and hence, was able to make a complete justice in analyzing it's relevance in the current time!
    4. I swear I don't have any problem with any of the hosts of the show but I just don't feel the duo complement each other like Akash and Navin in Vartalab. I actually like both of you (Abbas and Urjita) in Cyrus Says way more because you have to be on your toes all the time, be very witty and sharp, and Cyrus WILL call you out for stupid remarks. So that brings out the best of both of you. Here, the energy is way down and Urjita needs to improve SO much! Sorry again, but I hope you pay attention to the comments instead of thinking of it as a rant from a troll!
