I was hunting around the house for something to clean my filter with.
Thought about dishwasher, then saw your vid.
I smashed up a dishwasher tablet in the packet, then ripped it open and put it into the water.
Then placed the filter in the water and it instantly started working.
Then pored a jug of boiling water in there tub and presto, it went crazy..
My filter hadn’t been cleaned for more than 20 yrs, so it was pretty bad.
Thankyou so much for your help :)

Oven cleaner method was a success! I allowed the oven cleaner to sit on mine for 2 full hours. I rinsed with water, but some grease was a little stubborn so I had to use a scrub brush and dish soap as well. They looked great! But to be extra clean I popped them into the dish washer with Cascade detergent, and turned it onto the sanitize cycle. They look practically brand new! I think now I should be able to do weekly cleaning/maintenance with the dishwasher. I feel like as long as you do a weekly clean, then there won't be a need for oven cleaner again.

You life saver! My tenants left me a grease filter filled rock solid with grease. Couldnt see through it. For 2 days I was soaking in hot soapy water with a bit of bicarb soda and only got out 50%. Then I watched your video - oh, I need to put on that much bicarb soda. I did the oven cleaner method a few hours ago and it worked. I used Easy Off fume free (much better). I followed the host's directions. A lot of greasy residue and gunk came out. Since I hadn't cleaned my filter in a while, I added some Dawn dishwashing liquid to the filter for another 15 minutes and rinsed it out with hot water. It is very clean and sparkly. From now on I will clean it more often. Again, thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for this video. My grease filters were in a horrible condition and I used quite an amount of dish detergent and vinegar to soak them overnight. Unfortunately the grease turned into glue and the situation seemed hopeless. I really thought I had to buy new filters. Then I found this video and I tried the Amway automatic dish tabs and they had worked wonders for me. I had to use one tab for each filter and they came out sparklingly clean after soaking for 30 minutes and a little brushing. No discolouration. Thank you again!

Hate to say it but that Oven Cleaner is fantastic. I've had grease sprayed on the wall and spraying it and leaving it for a few minutes and easy to remove. I also use it on stove trays. My filter is made from aluminium, it’s discoloured from using a dissolved dishwashing tablet. Since mine is inserted into a cover no one really sees it, but something for others to keep in mind if they want them to stay looking shiny and new to avoid oxidising agents. Hot water and dish liquid on a more frequent basis might be better

@@melatomicIf it helps, I clean my AC filters by wiping off excess dirt with a paper towel. Then, soak them jn a solution of a dash of domestos and water in the bath. Leave for 10 mins, then swish filters up and down like you’re panning for gold. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry outside in fresh air before returning them. Hope that helps.

To clean off a sticky residue left on my filters from a previous botched clean, I soaked them in your 1 cup of Bi-Carb in boiling water mix (omitting the dishwashing detergent) for a few hours and with minimum light scrubbing and hot water rinse, they came out sparkling clean and all sticky residue gone 😊. Thankyou 🎉. That Easy Off Oven Cleaner has gone up in price from $3.50 to $5.75 now with Inflation- a horrible product to use inside a confined space like the Oven- can burn your skin, and damage lungs- not worth the risk.

Thanks! My home came with great appliances, but the area under the microwave with built-in vents (above the range) has little globs of grease from the previous owner. Yuck. The dishwasher tablet did an easy, no-mess job for the filters, but the underside that I can't remove was another story. I used lots hot water straight from the Rinnai hot water unit into the laundry (used lots so it would maintain a hot temperature) and sprinkled in some magic Finish "dust." Let sit for 5 minutes then gently scrubbed with a long handled nylon brush so I would get my fingies burned. There was about 10 years of gunk built up on this so they were chocka full of oily residue but 5 minutes was plenty. I did do a second full wash but that was totally unnecessary.
The down side was my OCD then compelled me to clean the oven hood due to it being a oh so obvious yellow colour compared to the filters. For the last 6+ years I have been trying to get charcol filters for this rubbish hood but even the manufacturer can't get them made to fit the hood so I guess they (and the Good Guys) aren't getting my money for the new filters I was going to replace the old dirty/now clean shiney ones with.

    1. Caustic oven spray - but fumes

    3. Sard or NapiSan - which are just baking soda on roids
    4. Non caustic oven spray - no fumes
    5. Baking soda - which is really what non caustic oven spray is
    6. Dishwashing liquid
