  • An Evening at Pops concert featuring conductor (and composer) John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra with special guest, opera singer Frederica von Stade, broadcast on the Public Broadcasting System June 18, 1988. This episode marked the premiere of the 19th season of Evening at Pops which ran on PBS from 1970 to 2005. At the end of the video, I have included a press photo for the concert that shows von Stade along with pianist Andre Watts who was also featured that evening (a video of his performance can also be seen on this TH-cam channel).

What a great surprise to discover this old (but for me, all new) recording of the incredible and beatiful (in all senses) FvS! More I look her, more I listen her, more I fall in love with her! Thanks, Vintage Broadcasting System, whoever are behind this name..

I have known Flicka for 30 years and she is the most humble and decent human being I have ever known. She was always very giving and gracious to her fans after every concert she performed. She would stay to greet and sign autographs and take pictures with her fans until the last person came through the line. She always had a kind word for everyone she ever worked with. I have never met anyone with her global appeal that was kinder and gentler than Flicka.

It’s easy in show business to play Angel or Drmon. As a lyric mezzo ( many felt she was a lower soprano ) with the plain nice way she looks and being white, American upper middle class born , with a fairly unchallenging repertoire I don’t think Frederica has had a problem playing Angel. In fact she would had been labeled to always play that by her agents anyway. The biz is very strange the boxes it placed people into. Many felt Von Stade was more sexy than she was allowed to be. Others who looked sexier yet were more innocent were pushed towards Demon persona. It’s all a game. Some are allowed to bitch others have to play girl next door. Like Hollyweird. At the end of they day everyone is a mixture of many things.
