I'm actually watching this video, with a Macbook similar to this. (MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) And I can say, this Mac has been amazing for the many years I've had it. I can say it still runs pretty well, and sometimes better then new Windows computer coming out these recent years. Obviously, it isn't in it's prime anymore but still gets things done, without any issues like lag, and overall no performance issues, and I've never changed anything hardware-wise in it. Can still stream, and play games on it, and go on high-performance apps. Honestly, I would change computers, for a newer one but sadly these new ones tend to be made cheaper then this, and lack the features, like this one has. As an Apple worker once said to me, this computer is a gem, and they dont make this type of quality anymore. I'm not an Apple fan, with this being one of the very few apple products I own, but honestly, for 2022 it can still handle it. It just depends on how well you've treated and maintained it, but I use this daily and its great. But maybe in the future, I'll be doing this type of upgrade.

@@montyv9801 right, when you restore to factory you will go backwards. Problem is, I tried that, and I could not go back to original factory. Any upgrades in MacOS become the new “factory” settings. I have noticed over the past month that the market for "macbook" parts, accessories, chargers, etc are so inflated and cost much more than any other laptop would.... for example I got q charger for my Dell laptop for under $10 original dell charger. For a macbook a new charger is about $50 original apple . Ram is the same story, and so is all of the apple accessories.... in my opinion is not worth it to pay premium price for a 9 year old laptop

Very good video. Helped me in upgrading my macbook pro. Mine laptop ssd was damaged and performing very bad, I was unable to use my macbook. Then i saw this video and just for getting some info visited apple store. There they said that this macbook won't support any kind of ssd and for installation of normal hardisk of 500gb they will charge more than rs10000 and expense more if necessary and rs2000 more for service charge. Then I lest from the apple service center and visited local market coz this tutorial gave me enough knowledge and self confidence. Then there i get my macbook opened and installed 120gb ssd for macos. And 500gb hdd as additional space. And soon i will upgrade my 4gb ram to 8 or 10gb ddr3.
Thanks friends for such a knowledgeable video.

2011 13" mbp- 2.7Ghz dual core low power core i7 with 4MB cache and 3.4Ghz turboboost
    2018 13" mbp- 2.7Ghz quad core core i7 with 8MB cache and 4.5Ghz turboboost
    graphics -
    2011 13" mbp- intel HD3000 512mb vram (a very crappy igpu)
2018 13" mbp- intel Iris Plus 655 1536mb vram (you can actually render 4k and play some games with this)
    connectivity-
    2011 13" mbp- RJ45, FireWire 800,Mini DP+ Thunderbolt 1.0, x2 USB 2.0, SD Card reader, 3.5mm out, dvd drive
    2018 13" mbp- x4 Thunderbolt 3 ports
    ram and storage speed-
    2011 13" mbp- up to 16GB of 1333Mhz DDR3 ram, Sata3.0 6GBP/S (theoretically up to 600mpbs with a good ssd)
2018 13" mbp- up to 16GB of 2133Mhz LPDDR3 SDRAM (SDRAM has less latency than non-soldered RAM), PCIe 3.0 256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB SSD (up to 2700mbps read and write speeds)
    cinebench -
    2011 13" mbp- around 245-250cb
    2018 13" mbp- around 680-687cb
all of that and this is besides the fact that you could use an external GPU on the 2018 13" mbp for even more performance...
the only bad thing about the 2018 macbook pro is that it has the worst keyboard ever made, in terms of thermals both machines have thermal problems (if my own 2011 13" mbp idles at 50-60 degrees celsius even after changing the thermal paste to grizzly kryonaut, something is seriously wrong with its thermal design...)

The last MacBook Pro that could be upgraded was the mid-2012 non retina. The retina version of that same year started being soldered. For anyone curious, the mid-2012 Macs' RAM specs are 1600mHz PC3 12800 DDR3 SODDIM. Use that and you'll be on your way. Make sure not to use RAM from older MacBooks, because they aren't compatible (same for those with older Macs that want newer RAM), even if on the outside the computer is identical.

But also, some external music gear isn’t recognized with High Sierra. Some midi keyboards and drum machines etc. And of course now that Apple doesn’t support Hugh Sierra as of the last couple months, no security. I really don’t wanna buy a new Mac. I love mine.

You could've replaced the optical drive with another internal SSD or HDD and then ran them both in Raid. It might've been easier. There are also a lot of drives with SATA and micro usb ports so you don't have to disconnect the micro-usb adapter. Also, if you're using final cut pro, the 16gb of RAM are gonna be bottlenecked by the 2 core CPU. I'd recommend saving up and building a new rig if you're gonna be working on more render heavy stuff. The 4790k is a really fast 8 core CPU with hyperthreading, a bit pricey but it's a great value and you'll be able to utilize as much RAM as you can afford with support for DDR3. A lot of people will tell you that Haswell CPU's are outdated, but that's not true, especially considering how LGA 1150 mobos are a lot cheaper than 1151 compatible motherboards. These are just things to keep in mind if you're planning on an upgrade anytime soon. Anyway keep up the videos fam, they're great!

So I have a dilemma please help me! Both laptops are going to bought used. I can either buy a 2012 13” MacBook Pro with i5 for $300, no upgraded have been done. Or I can buy 2011 15” MacBook Pro with quad core i7 for $310, the ram has been upgraded to 8gb. Both are in fairly used condition and I would have to spend about $90 on each one if I would buy. I would have to upgrade ram on 13” or upgrade ssd on 15”, again which works out between $70 and $90. Is there that big of a difference between the two years? I mainly just want to use it for creative purposes (GarageBand, iMovie, etc) but I also need it for school so it has to multitask smoothly. I want to use it for a while so I’m worried that 2011 will be too old (not eligible for updates etc) are there any major difference between the two. Thanks for the help!

Why would you install the same slow drive in the optical holder instead of a SSD? 2 TB does not speed it up, that's storage size only, as long as your new main drive has the OS it will run faster, but it will bottleneck when it accesses the HDD.
