Quit bashing this guy. This kid is what 16 yrs old? With knowledge well beyond that. Like someone else below stated. I've never heard of, "wrangler star".( not knocking wrangler star) But this guy puts out excellent videos. Teaching people is a skill not many people have. And this guy has that. I've learned a lot watching his channel. You just keep doing what your doing BraveTheWilds. And Thank you for the education!!!!

    Great video, Kenny. I subscribed.
I read the comments about similar content. I struggled with the same concerns when considering whether to start my own channel. I mean, surely everything I could show has been covered elsewhere, why make another channel? Then I realized we each bring our own unique gifts and talents to whatever we do and that maybe my perspective on something will be of value to someone. None of us know it all and one of the great benefits of this TH-cam community is the ability to share ideas and learn from each other.
If you are like me, it may seem like every time you release a new video you wind up finding a bunch of other, similar videos but you have to just keep doing what you can to create quality content and be true to your vision for your channel.
You are doing great Kenny. Keep it up.
    Bryan

I agree with one poster here leave the kid alone he is doing something positive and at the same time he is actually giving back which most people forget to do today. as the one commenter said below he could be a kid running the streets and be just like about 60% of te kids out there today with there head buried in a cell phone or tv screen or worse yet a mindless video game for hour and hours on end. The kid is doing far better then most kids I seen twice his age. hats off to him wish I had more like him. one thing though I would like to add when using that file on the axe edge in the vise don't grind downwards like that it's a accident waiting to happen. I hate to see you loose your trigger finger son. work that file away from the edge for safety or mount the axe in a different way.

A very good video. Refreshing one's knowledge on sharping keeps a fellow from getting into bad habits and becoming dull. I like to refresh many basic training items now and then just to keep up with what new techniques and materials are out there. Plus updating my learning is one of the reasons I'm so good looking at my age. Keep up on your videos.

Alright , Everyone else is using those pucks I'll have to get one to see!?. Great vid I've been researching axe sharpening since I got my swiss military survival axe. It's kinda heavy but I have knifes for all my fine work. Seeing as how it's brand new and came with a not so sharp "shipping" edge. I wanted to see about refining it , My handle also came unfinished "raw" and I couldn't understand what you meant by the finish you used. Could you elaborate??. I was just going to give it a good boiled linseed oil rub. Thank you for the info and the nudge into the puck!!. Peace

Thank you for your axe sharpening advice.I was always told you could not use a file because you could not guarantee the file would be harder than the axe steel, and so could not be used .Well you proved a lot of people wrong!Another thing, any reason why you did not apply oil to the lansky sharpener, does it have to be water?Sorry for the questions I have never tried this.

*were* the best. They've recently (within the last 2 or 3 years) been outsourcing to Mexico, Brazil, and Columbia, amongst other places. Quality has gone down, but they're still better than most of the other big box brands.
dependable, USA-made filing tools are getting harder and harder to come by. i'm not really sure if there are any accessible stateside manufacturers still producing them.

why are so many guys out there afraid of putting a good edge on their axes? its the grinding angle that decides over if its going to chip or roll, if the angle is adequate its not going to do that. a rough, kind of sharp edge is just thousands of a millimeter thicker than a mirror polished one, and because it is rougher there are tiny pieces of metal that may fold over, dulling your edge more quickly. a fine edge lasts longer than a coarse edge.

What brand of handles do you use for your axes

  • @zombiefighterof1987
    @zombiefighterof1987 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually it's quite the opposite with sharpening an axe: A dull or coarser edge will not last as long as a razor sharp or near razor sharp edge, also if the edge knicks or folds over when chopping if it's very sharp that means it's either a low HRC or lower quality steel. I respect your opinion but i prefer making my axe shaving sharp and just regulary honing it as that takes litteraly 5 minutes as long as i don't damage it which is rare as opposed to having it sharp enough to just cut paper and having to take 15 minutes to sharpen it.

So what if it is from wrangler star? If wranglerstar himself was watching this he wouldn't care. His whole point is to share knowledge on TH-cam and this is Kenny's way of sharing it further. If Kenny was copying all his ideas (he isn't) directly from somebody that would still be an ok thing to do as long as he mentioned where he got the idea and gave credit where it is due.

I don't care if he copies exactly what someone else is doing as someone said hes like Wanglerstar. I'll be honest Kenny built a hut. I built a cabin and a lot of his ideas I used ot copied. This other he copied supposely built a cabin too. We all had different ideas to put in the project that made it different. Kenny is sixteen, I would rather see him doing this then running the streets. Who knows maybe he inspired on kid to stay off the streets by his videos or projects. So give him a break and let him do what he does best, I say he's a rather cool person. Stop saying who he copying and enjoy his video. So kenny, this is your channel, but that upset me. As another person I know stopped making videos because of threats. Others calling others fake. We should all get along. If you like to remove this post please do so. Keep making your videos because I have learned from them....

There is no "proper way' to sharpen anything, it's more just a matter of choice and available tools - I build axes and wouldn't advise on doing it this way as it's a little difficult to maintain a proper chisel. Everyone seems to want help sharpening everything these day's and that is the problem - the key is to not letting your knives or axes become blunt - I keep all of my knives and axes razor sharp with a piece of leather glued to a piece of wood (A strop) loaded up with honing compound. If you don't know how to profile an axe, best to have an experienced person do it for you in a purpose built jig.

I learned to sharpen knives and axes/hatchets when I was about 8 and it's now an almost mindless task. You put too much thought into your efforts.
Plus, I've always considered it better to use a light oil with the stone, although some people will say that will ruin the stone. I have stones that I've had for over 20 years that still work very well. Besides - it's a tool, right? :-)

I actually saw Wranglerstar's video on sharpening an axe only after I already created this one. I do admit they are very similar, but I strive for the content on my channel to be comprehensive. Lots of people haven't heard or don't watch Wranglerstar, so I can't just write off not doing a video because someone else may have already done it. And a lot of my content can't be from him if I've been doing videos for years and I only starting watching him in the past few weeks.

BraveTheWilds I haven't seen Wranglerstar's video on this, but really, if the two videos give accurate information how different can they be? When teachers teach the bulk of the information is the same, but each brings their own approach to getting it across. Same with instructional videos, plus little touches of tips and tricks from different experiences.
