Nothing personal, but the wisdom I’ve gained from listening to opinions on news channels like CNN, BBC, DW, NYT, and WaPo is that most forecasts and predictions rarely pan out, often missing the mark by a significant margin. The conventional wisdom, therefore, is to treat the news as raw input, apply critical thinking, and rely on your own heuristics-those mental shortcuts and instincts-to navigate the bigger picture. Take, for example, the discussions about removing Russia from SWIFT to cripple its banking system-just look at how that played out.
Have you looked into how the Russian economy is doing right now? It may have taken a while thanks to Russian government intervention, but it’s not doing well at all. The predictions seem to be doing just fine.
@ These News channel pundits touted Russia’s removal from SWIFT as a silver bullet that would cripple its economy, but the predicted collapse never came. While sanctions have hurt sectors like technology, consumer goods, and imports, Russia has relied on its resource wealth, redirected trade with non-Western countries, and domestic adjustments to stabilize its economy. The short-term resilience is clear, but long-term challenges, especially from restricted access to Western technology and investment, still loom.
For nations whos manufacturing base has been exported allowing free trade without tariffs while enforcing relativley high levels of regulation at home is a road to ruin.
Of course, tariffs resulted in higher prices for consumers. You know the sellers pay less for it when you purchase an item. So you might say, 'He must have bought it for less than one dollar if he is selling it for one dollar. ' Supposed he imported it from Canada for 60 cents each, and the US plans to impose a 100% tariff next week on that item, then he will have to pay Uncle Sam 60 cents as well, So it would cost him 120 cents for each. Would he still sell it to you for one dollar each? Of course not.
Simultaneously Trump is deporting those who currently do the work. Talk about being squeezed out of the market. No one to make the products, meaning more imports are necessary. Imports carry a tariff which makes them more expensive. See this cycle recursively. This is a huge ontplof (explosion).

Tariffs equals more money for a country to spend on programs for their citizens. Tariffs balance trade inequality. Tariffs force manufactures to build factories in the cheaper country. So say an item costs less to make in the USA. It won't be made in China anymore. In the long term more money will stay in the country.
@@jack8230 you're basically just echoing the mercantilistic view of the 17th century empires. The issue with that philosophy is A, you are ultimately poorer as by definition the tariff favors the less productive local industry. Tariffs go both ways, retaliation is the logical game theory option and yoru export industries become less competitive. Blanket tariffs are even worse because, Americans aren't going to be sowing shoes for a dollar a day, there aren't many places you can grow avocados, 90% of the metallurgical raw materials used by US industries are imported.
Exactly, but many people today are not even aware of what is transpiring in the global south and far as growth and productivity
This channel is just one of many that will be zeroed out soon.
It's simple, negotiate trade agreements or get fk'd. Brexit should have taught everyone that by now.
So NAFTA will protect Canada and Mexico then?

For nations whos manufacturing base has been exported allowing free trade without tariffs while enforcing relativley high levels of regulation at home is a road to ruin.

USA has investments all over the world. I think the USA will be fine.

Tariffs are a tax on US consumers.
Tariffs equals more money for a country to spend on programs for their citizens. Tariffs balance trade inequality. Tariffs force manufactures to build factories in the cheaper country. So say an item costs less to make in the USA. It won't be made in China anymore. In the long term more money will stay in the country.
@@jack8230 more taxes for more government programs? I don't think so. Republicans are all about lowering taxes on the wealthy folk.
@@jack8230 you're basically just echoing the mercantilistic view of the 17th century empires. The issue with that philosophy is A, you are ultimately poorer as by definition the tariff favors the less productive local industry. Blanket tariffs are even worse because, Americans aren't going to be sowing shoes for a dollar a day, there aren't many places you can grow avocados, 90% of the metallurgical raw materials used by US industries are imported. @@jack8230 and I'm not against protectionism being used in a measured capacity to help within select sunrise industries or in response to unfair trade practices.
