I was laid off from Microsoft on 7/17/2014 along with thousands of other talented people. I had an amazing 15 years at Microsoft and I will honestly miss working there and I'm still in shock over being laid off.
Do not ask me to reveal Microsoft secrets or ask me questions about future projects! I take my NDA very seriously and would never violate it. The emotions and opinions in this video are based on public knowledge and NOT internal information. I would ask that you please respect that.
When I say "I don't agree with the direction Microsoft is going" I'm only speaking from public knowledge of 18,000 people being laid off. I have no knowledge of the companies internal strategic direction nor would I share it if I did so please do not ask.
I also would like to state that Microsoft is a great company and they are doing their best to ensure the 18,000 employee's that were laid off have enough of a buffer to go out and find a new job. They are doing more then they are required to by law and for that I commend them. It's little cancellation when I was planing to give my life to that company and I'm still upset but people need to know that they are doing their best to ensure people are taken care of during their transition and this is why I am not 'mad' at them.
Also I would like to clarify in the video that when I say 'I have a few months to figure things out' that doesn't mean my resources will be exhausted in a few months. Microsoft is taking care of us for a period of time to allow us to transition. It just means I will start the job hunt at that point if progress is not being made on my own. I would never do anything last minute or exhaust my resources without another plan and jeopardize my family.
Thank you again for all of your support, you guys are all amazing and just watching my videos makes me happy beyond words. Time to start this new chapter in my life and see where it takes me!

18 Years at Intel. I did get an okay separation package. Best thing that ever happened to me. Now I make more money, don't have to sit in a tiny cubical and actually have an office door and don't have 20 meetings a day.

Good for you, Angela! I always tell people, the best thing that can happen to an IT professional is a layoff. It happened to me and I have moved on to bigger and better things. Like the old saying goes, "when one door closes, another one opens".
What do you do now?
Laid off by Chase bank, a job that took all the fun out of IT. Looking back they did me a favor. I started a business providing IT for small businesses and I have never been happier. I have exceeded the salary I had before, I work much less hours and from home, and I take as many vacations as I want because 95% of the work can be done from anywhere.
@rtrain67 Do you have any advice on where to start an IT career? I am getting my A+ cert soon and am not sure where to apply.
1/29/2018 - It's been over 3 years since Microsoft laid me off and my family and I are doing much better. The TH-cam career took off and branched out into a live streaming career on Twitch and between all you awesome supporters and the platforms that have been generous letting me upload and share my content I'm able to provide for my family. That being said this year (2018) I'm going to kick things up so I can not only get by with my family but actually have some money to put away for our future. I just wanted to thank every single person that watched this video and all the amazing people that understood my situation and sympathized with me for the support, it really did make things much easier over the last few years and continues to make my future brighter.
Oh, and to the few haters that felt it necessary to kick someone while they were down. I just hope that you also found something good in your life to help kill off that negativity that only makes you feel good when you're boot is on someone else throat. I hold no ill will or feelings towards you for trolling me because i realize you were probably dealing with something similar and hopefully you overcome what is holding you back and move forward in a positive way.

***** I got an email back which was surprising... and kinda had me worry because I thought that meant support via that route wasn't as frequent as I'd hoped. He said he wasn't going to make anything he did exclusive, and I think if he started a Patreon it wouldn't serve a very different purpose. Getting a thanks back was enough for me, and pretty surprising. My contribution wasn't big, but I have his Amazon link saved. I contract as a 3d artist at Microsoft for about 10 years when I lived in Seattle, commuting across that 520 bridge everyday. I worked on the flight sim team, the forza team, The crimson sky's team, and the project G team, went on 3 8hr interviews over the years and never got hired. But they kept calling back to work on projects. It was so confusing. I finally started turning down contract jobs there and went to work full time for Sony.
Damn. 15 years of hard work and this is what happens?

Win 10 still has some weird bugs...odd lines showing up on screen and sometimes clicks don't register.

they have so much data on exactly how much work individuals put out, and their return on the money they are paying them. yea its cold i guess but when you are as huge as them i couldnt think of a better way of figuring out who to fire. they obviously figured they paid him alot of money and it wasnt worth what he was bringing them.

Worked at Microsoft before and it sucked. I quit after being burnt out from working over time all the time. The senior manager was an assh*le.
Too many vendors from India competing for projects and a lot of politics. I'm glad I quit and would never go back unless they make me the CEO.
People bragging about working for Microsoft, Google , Apple etc are dumb and brain washed. Corporations don't care about people, they only care about the bottom line. Don't be loyal to companies because they give a damn about their employees.
Work where you get paid well and enjoy working. Don't work for a brand. Always look for better opportunities and jump ships when they pay you better. You have to look out for yourself. Good luck.

Take this guy's advice with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own situation and envision yourself at any future potential employer. For example, I work at one of the big ones currently. I turned down an offer a year ago that paid 20% more, because I saw 60-hour work weeks, a dimly lit cubicle, and my peers all being 40+ (I'm 28) in my future if I accepted. One year later, I feel I made the right choice.

Then they tried to say that I was always late and almost never showed up for my shift. They are liars about that but I don't really care. Not my problem anymore and it will never go on my resume.

one day i'm on my way to work and i get a call from the agency that placed me there
they said i had to come to head office this morning instead of reporting to work
i was like "ummm ok......WTF"
so i went in
and it was like taking a gun and a badge from a cop
they took my id and passkey
and they said.... GET THIS SHIT
"From this point on you are not allowed in the building"
like...wtf
it's not like i perhaps started a fight with someone and i was considered a security risk or something
i literally did nothing
and , if they would have said "Martin, we have decided to let you go"
at least i could understand that
but i wasn't even told i was being let go
so.. i asked
"why, what did i do wrong"
and the agency simply said
"we are not at liberty to disclose that information"
and i'm like WTF
what do you mean,
YOU ARE LETTING ME GO, because of a decision that the bank made,
can't i just know what i did wrong, because i have no idea what i've done
they said "No, we've been instructed to not tell you"
I MEAN SERIOUSLY
what could i have done that was that bad that it resulted in me being expelled from the worksite

and threatened that if i ever returned i would be fine

Look at companies in the past that screwed each other over. maybe one day Someone they got rid of will do a corporate take over of a company that fired them. I agree about the new ceo. *they* wanted to stop people coming into the states on passports I forget what it is called for very smart and innovative kids coming into the colleges. Studies show those people later add to the system and make and build new companies. Smarter kids then we have in this country. This reminds me of an asian woman working for the marriott here. This is an old video. This is a struggle that you have obviously conquered and have maybe even forgot about. But you're words move me. You have been working hard your whole life. You've done everything you can for your family and you still find time to entertain us. I'm just graduating high school here in Spokane WA. Honestly life has been scaring me. I now realize how big of a deal life is. however this video and your channel in general has begun to motivate me to start moving closer towards my dream. I want to be a video editor, always have and I have gained confidence going into this field of work by watching your videos. You make the best out of so many situations and I just love what you have to offer on this channel. I just wanted to say thank you. I can so relate! Fired after 16+ years, then watching the downward spiral that led to the layoff of 400 more and the disappearance of the company's name and identity, it was a sad trail. In retrospect I think they saved my life by removing the pressure I was under. There's always a positive somewhere. ☺

This is why health insurance in the USA sucks. If you were in any other industrialized nation, your son's health wouldn't be tied to a company that can drop you on a whim, and therapy wouldn't cost you tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I agree our health care system sucks. It will cost me almost $2000 a month out of pocket to maintain the insurance he needs. Makes me realize why there are so few people succeeding with home base businesses, etc. The taxation and healthcare costs are astronomical.

Same thing happened to a whole lot of us IBMers in the 90's. I just did slide in under the 15-year mark and scored a small pension. I don't hold anything against them. They took extremely good care of me and my family during my tenure.
Microsoft went downhill hard after that round of layoffs. That new direction they took sucks. They're doing things they used to ridicule other companies for doing and it's sad to see. I used to be a loyal Microsoft girl, but unless they stop their bullshit I probably won't buy any more of their products. WTF are you doing, Microsoft?
OK your comment reminds me I might be doing a COMPLETE spin and switch to Apple. Because my music studio requires an iPad to link and mix with my music program anyway. Might as well right? Microsoft is shit, and here's a heads up for ya. People would call me as I was working in tech support, and some have said that they would never switch to Windows 10, or that they hated the switch that came about. Some were even forced into Windows 10 by the auto install. Yeah Windows in 2016 is a complete disaster. It's been 2 years since this layoff and the only thing Windows has going for them under their new OS is the way its programmable parts work. And the layout design just sucks hard.
Brick and Order I was forced into the Windows 10 install. I'd said no I don't even know how many times and woke up one day with it done. It locked me out of a ton of documents and overrode my access to my already purchased Office suite, and that caused me to turn a paper in late, since I had to find an alternative software etc etc etc. Some people try to push the blame on me, but when you've already said no, you don't expect to wake up with it done in spite of your expressed wishes. Total bullshit.
I'm really sorry for that. I had a similar lock-up to my productivity due to the taskbar stalling permanently, and the media player bugging out FOREVER in Windows 10. The fixes are online unfortunately it's a tasteless pursuit. Very unacceptable and even for someone with patience. Thanks a lot Microsoft. I'll never take another look at their Surface book.
Why switch to Apple? Apple products are made from the infamous Foxconn factory. Look at all those worker testimony reports about exactly how Foxconn treats them and the unrealistic expectations that Apple sets on them. Apple products are made for a fraction of the cost of a Microsoft product and then they charge double what Microsoft would charge. There's a reason that the Apple facility in Cali they are like royalty because they have Chinese slaves to do all the real grunt work. Apple is among the shadiest companies in the world just below by Monsanto or BP. Microsoft is going downhill after a series of fuckups in its attempt to enter into the mobile and tablet world. I only use Windows to game. Everything else can be done open source on a Linux or Ubuntu platform.
Windows 7 is the best operating software I've used, Mac is the worst, just barely worse than 10 (Fuck those infinite loading screen)
They've slowly improved 10 so it doesn't have as MANY flaws as it did when I first installed it but-JESUS is it bad at times!

Why the hell pay you for your great service, when they can have 20 Indian workers in your place in a sweat shop in India?
Or just use the available US H1B visa, there is no reason to not continue using those.
LOL good point but You're not getting my point, I'm not speaking of educated professionals coming here. Companies will cry QUALITY to the heavens. When in reality all they care about is the bottom line. So I'm speaking strictly about the sweat shops where they take people, train them poorly, treat them poorly and try to pawn the product off as being the same. Unfortunately it isn't. But thats moddern business. This IS happening, I've experienced it with my own eyes. 7 on shore DBAs down to one supported by offshore. Disaster. 10 person infra team down to 2, supported by offshore, total disaster. There is more but typing on a phone stinks. My point is they are deleting years long pros and replacing them with fresh lambs from nowhere to save a buck. Problem is the work doesn't get done correctly or at all and the now diminished staff has too do double, triple what they did before. Meanwhile, management gets pats on the back and huge bonuses for saving the company so much money. Oh well.

I’m about to go through the same thing. I work on the server team for my employer. We are in the process of decommissioning thousands of servers and virtualizing quite a bit and moving quite a bit of stuff to the cloud. The company plans on running a hybrid model because they have to keep somethings on premises.
50% of my team has already been laid off.
I know I won’t last 12 months.
I am now studying for aws certs because the cloud is definitely the future.

They laid off all of these workers thanks to the new CEO and his stupid "cloud" movement. I will use win 7 until the day I die, I will never use windows 8/9 or any other rediclous OS that relies on the "cloud" or looks like a stupid tablet.
I can tell you have alot of experiance with Windows 8... The "Tablet" part of it only comes into play when you start up the computer for about 5seconds. You don't really notice it unless you constantly think about it.... Don't hate it untill you try it. (Seeing a friend use it and/or trying it for 5-20min doesn't count)

Jakob Öhrnell I do have a lot of experience with windows 8 and no the tablet theme is in every part that isn't the desktop. Search bar, power options, start menu, sometimes simply opening a picture takes you to the tablet part of it, and many other things. I personally don't hate it but I can see why others wouldn't like it.
My brother was part of that layoff. He was there for 21 years & is still looking for steady work. Good things happen for some after being laid off, not for others.

I don't know if you realized it, but when I didn't have ad blockers google ads would show stuff that is similar as stuff I searched on internet and similar stuff. This data is really valuable to marketing companies and it would be stupid of them if they would make something without profit. It could also be illegal for Google to lose money on purpose because that way they are damaging their shareholders. Next time you comment don't be stupid.

If you don't have a license already or you want to install it onto a new machine you have to buy the license, which is £99 for Home or £180 for Pro. It's also only "free" for the first year, after this you'll have to pay for a license if you want to install it after this point and haven't upgraded your Windows 7/8.1 license.
