  • Some long forgotten memories can exert a lingering influence on us that we may not be aware of. But, although we don't always see them we definitely feel them, and for many of us these memories are only detectable by the poisonous haze they cast over our lives.
For many of our clients, this may lead them to ask: "Why am I like this?"
So in this video I share 4 steps you can take to free your clients from the influence of these often forgotten negative memories which can cause low self-esteem. This was the case with Emily who I talk about in this video, who came to me for help with low self-esteem and self-confidence.
I describe how to use the Affect Bridge to instantly raise self-esteem in 4 steps, including:
    05:30 - Find the feeling
    06:12 - Find the memory
    07:55 - Reframe the memory
09:47 - Hypnotically rehearse new patterns

    1. Find and isolate feeling.
    2. Find memory.
    3. Reframe memory (frame with a value you have).
    4. Reherse new pattern.s (new emotional templates)

My current therapist is working with me on old memories that are the source of my depression, anxiety, fear and feeling incompetent even though my cognitive brain knows that I am capable and competent. I have to reparent myself to help that frightened little girl be able to face the world with confidence. This approach has never been used in my prior 20 years of therapy and yet it has been the most effective. As you point out in the video, sometimes it takes bringing an old memory out into the open, identify the feeling it causes and developing new coping skills to take the power away from the old memory. It is hard and painful at times, but it is harder and more painful to live with the consequences. I hope many therapists will watch this video and put your steps to work for their clients. Thank you for the helpful and insightful videos you post.

Thank you Sir. Low self-esteem was triggered earlier. This helped me think about a memory in my past that made me feel inferior, similar to an after feeling whenever I observe others doing great. I told my younger self that I see her, I appreciate her, and I'm proud of her - suddenly making me feel better about myself again. I am figuring out my future template of myself with a healthier self-esteem: I imagine I'm in my career of helping others and just contributing makes me feel and think that I can do something for others and still help me feel fulfilled.

This must be the third time I've seen this video and although it is exactly what I needed, I didn't get that until this time. How can you characterize something that is so important for each of us? This video was really important, really helpful. I don't know of any other place where this is available (even though I'm studying psych as an undergrad) and I don't want to see a therapist, because I know many of them are completely overworked and impatient with people who are not a threat to themselves and others.

But it is more helpful if you watch the whole video. If you are in a hurry to heal by skipping to the bullets, you might just be missing out on a great message. Try watching a video through and to the end. This guy is worthy of that.

I get really paranoid around other woman. I have severe anxiety around woman. Could it be mainly about a very low self esteem?
These videos are really helping me, but I still can't shake the feeling when I'm around woman or when attractive woman in a movie come up. I start to feel really uncomfortable, breathing, I can't sit through a movie or go to the beach.

I hope you will see this after so long. I always had the same problem but I knew it came from the relationship I had with my hyper-critical and abusive older sister, my disengaged mother and all the women in my family thatcreated in me the belief that it is okay to hurt me because it's only me after all. Women and girls are bitchy and often passive agrressive. YOur fear is familiar tome because it signalled that my own experience and Voice would be stifled by these other women.

As a fellow traveller, I think recognizing the stress as stress can be helpful. Then, slowly, you can try to experience the stress solely as a physical sensation: tightness in the chest, etc. Try deep breathing. Then you can entertain various theories about why you feel stress: is it homophobia? Is it fear of being displaced/ obliterated / bettered? Then when you know (or think you know) why you feel stress, look at the cognitive component: If I'm afraid of women because they challenge my heterosexual orientation, what are some examples of situations where you did not feel threatened? Look for those negative examples: examples that contradict your fears.

It's sad how some therapists can take a client back to a traumatic event in grade school or even later BUT avoid going back to the place where most ppl are wouded...the very early years when their own parents or early care givers wounded the helpless, innocent child. Why are these therapists AFRAID to expose the damaging parents? What are these therapists trying to AVOID by ignoring or bypassing the client's most formative years with a DAMAGING, WOUNDING parent? Are these therapists trying to protect/defend all parents including their own parents & their own questionable parenting styles? Most, if not all, emotional damage occurs at home, within the first few years & then happens later on at school or in the now damaged child's public life. It all starts with good or bad PARENTING & perhaps some genetic factors BUT mostly PARENTING which seems the hardest element for therapists & client's to FACE!!!! WHY????? 😮😮😮
