Almost every Saw does this. Potential tearout happens on top of the cut.
Did you notice that it’s a Festool TSV , it has a scribe blade on it too

No pre drill? Even with a self tapper, that wood could easily split. Especially if it was more dry than that board is. This is a great method, but I would suggest pre drilling if this was a nicer or harder wood.
It’s soaked soft wood so no an issue pal

Expensive stuff that Cedar £14-20 a piece..but does look very nice.

No problem man,
Look at any wood finish on any NEW building and it looks absolutely 💩 in 5 years. Ask any guy with a wooden decked yacht how often he has to varnish it..and yacht varnish is the best you can get because a deck is facing the sun every day of its life. If I'd done this job I would have made 2 separate, quick-release frames to varnish front and back every 5 years
Yes I see where he is going wrong you don’t apply varnish you need to oil it once a year . Try that and see how he gets on pal
You don’t have to varnish it especially if you look after it, Osmo oil would do just fine!

The joists are 300mm of the ground and we put an 18 t&g OSB board down with glue and screws
