    Hey yall, I have now realized I used the wrong photo of Mauretania and misspelled Aquitania! Please recognize I am an idiot with a microphone, not an expert. The song used for the background is "Emperor's Waltz" by Strauss. There is a strong possibility more mistakes will be found in this video by myself and the people in the comments, so stay tuned. The thing about the lifeboats though, is that they weren't originally intended to be used to evacuate ALL passengers and crew members at once. The idea was to utilize them to ferry passengers and crew between the doomed ship and any rescue ships in the area. Conversely, lifeboats from any rescue ships could be sent to the crippled vessel to keep the transporting of crew and passengers in rotation. Thus, an ocean liner wasn't required to have enough boats to accommodate every single person on board.

    • @Daz912

    00:45 FUN FACT : The white blob to the right of Capt. Smith is intentional as when the Titanic sank there was very little footage of the ship on film / photographed. Therefore the news outlets (and documentary makers) of the time would present a clip / image (usually containing Capt. Smith) as being the Titanic however they would often scratch the film (resulting in a white blob) so as to disguise certain features i.e a name plate e.g the Britannic / Olympic etc and pass off the clip as it being the Titanic which you will often see in other clips of the time.

    I thought it was pretty good, a lot of info I was thinking about and then was mentioned...plus, just enough hint of snarkiness to keep one entertained. And very good to mention the two members of White Star to suffer through and survive all three ships' worst days. Violet Jessop is deserving of the title "Miss Unsinkable."
    Of course, the lifeboat question still warrants one bit of address here. It was not just aesthetics. The safety standards of that time allocated the number of available lifeboats according to the overall tonnage of the ship, not the number of people it carried. And Olympic and Titanic were actually in compliance with those safety standards, even exceeded them; they were required only 16 lifeboats based on their weights, and they carried 20. Of course, Titanic demonstrated that those safety standards were woefully inadequate, and the presumptions behind those standards were disproven. All the standards in place today, including how to address ice floes, were a result of Titanic's sinking.
    I know there is a separate video for Olympic, but I still think it appropriate to use a twist on the blasphemous boast that doomed Titanic ("God Himself could not sink this ship," which we all know God proved wrong). Where Olympic was concerned, God Himself could very easily have sunk that ship; He just chose not to.

    H&W records show this ship was named Britannic from the time she was ordered in June 1911. As built, Olympic & Titanic could stay afloat with 2-4 watertight compartments flooded. (4-6 after post-Titanic changes) This made them very safe expect under the most unlikely circumstances. 64 lifeboats for Olympic/Titanic was never a serious proposal. Ships back then did not carry enough lifeboats for everyone onboard. There is no evidence White Star slowed Britannic's construction due to financial issues. (IMM made White Star stand on its own and raise $$$ for ship construction itself) Limited liability laws reduced White Star's losses on Titanic to manageable levels. No evidence a smoking room was put on the Poop Deck to make her look bigger. Evidence for a mine sinking Britannic is very high.

      Negative. When the three ships were first planned, they were named Olympic, Titanic, and Gigantic. I have books with pictures of the advertisement posters from the White Star Line with those exact names. The sister ships were the biggest and most grandeur so of course all three were named to reflect their size and strength. Why would they name two of their ships such pretentious names and give the third a more subdued one later? Because after Titanic sank sheer size wasn’t enough of a playing card to draw people in. After the keel was laid, and due to the Titanic’s sinking, they decided not to tempt fate again and gave her a more subtle name. But her original name was in fact Gigantic. Had Titanic not sunk she would have retained her original name.

    • @mindyschocolate
      @mindyschocolate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kaidhicksii no it wasn’t. Her original name was Gigantic. Her name, along with Olympic and Titanic, was to convey their enormous size and sheer strength, as the trio of ships were to be the largest ever built. The name was changed following Titanic’s sinking since they didn’t want to tempt fate again.

    • @Kaidhicksii
      @Kaidhicksii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mindyschocolate Wrong. H&W plans still exist of the construction of Hull #433. As early as February 1911 - before Titanic was even launched - the name of the third ship was intended to be Britannic. Need I say more? Those posters you've seen of the third ship being called Gigantic were a media creation: not an official White Star promotion. If it were, it would've had their name on it. There were letters between H&W and other contractors who were delivering parts such as the anchor. Those contractors referred to the third ship as Gigantic, but again, it was never official. At most, it was a name that was considered - likely for the reason of the Greek myths and the portrayal of great size - but ultimately never used. And as for Gigantic being a name that White Star had planned to use for some of their previous vessels, I do not have the source with me right now, but I will get back to you when I find it.
      In short, Gigantic was nothing more than a conceptual name that White Star considered using for the third ship. 3 months before the Titanic was launched, the name was settled as being Britannic. The Gigantic name ended up getting into the media, which then proceeded to blow it out of proportion, as they have done and continue to do with many things. Remember, it was they who said that the three new ships the White Star Line had ordered would be 1,000 feet long. At the end of the day, they didn't even touch 900.

    I'd like to add that even though there definitely weren't enough lifeboats on the Titanic, they weren't able to get the lifeboats away that they already had. (A and B had to be floated off the deck, not launched.) More lifeboats may have made a difference but I personally doubt they would have done anything but provide hassle and get in the way of the crew, who were barely trained in using them.
    EDIT: The Britannic was a beautiful ship and it's such a shame that she never got to become the ocean liner she should have been. Not to mention how much of a miracle it was that the ship wasn't full of the ill or wounded at the time of the accident- I don't want to imagine how many people would have died then.

    You should do a video about the SS Princess Sophia disaster, which is sometimes described as the "unknown Titanic of the West Coast." The story largely got buried because it happened near the end of World War I, but it's a tragic story of the ship and rescuers being caught in a lose-lose scenario that still inspires debate over a century later about what actions could have been taken to save the passengers.

    I think, but not sure, persons was A-more common as a plural back then and B-merriam webster states there's a slight preference to using people when it's a coherent collective group and persons for a large number of individuals with no real connection, as in persons who happen to be on the same ship but not a people as sharing a certain trait. It also states the preference for people for indeterminate numbers and persons for determinate number of.. well, persons. People has become preferred as the general plural over time.

    In regards to what was said at 1:46 about the Titanic:
    James Cameron did an interesting experiment proving that more lifeboats wouldn't have made a difference; Due to how long the crew waited before they started loading, there literally wasn't any time left to launch any more than they did when the ship finally sank. So, saying the lack of lifeboats was the primary reason for the amount of lives lost isn't exactly valid. Had the crew started loading people into them sooner, regardless of how empty or full they were being loaded, yes, more lifeboats would have definitely made a difference because there would have been more time available to launch them but, unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
    Cameron did multiple things on this TV special and he was also able to prove (through multiple experiments and simulation data from the US Navy) that he got the final sinking scene in "Titanic" wrong in regards to the angle at which the stern came up, when the ship ultimately split, how she split, and so forth.
    I don't remember the name of the program on which he did all of this but it's on multiple TH-cam channels and is definitely a great watch. I'd spent my life thinking that more lifeboats would have meant more lives saved and it turns out that it just isn't true.

    I just realized something about the Olympic class: all but one sank... Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the freezing Atlantic ocean, Britannic was either struck by a mine or torpedo and sunk in the warn Mediterranean sea, and the Olympic was struck by the HMS Hawk and had a long career as both a passenger and military ship.
    Also, I guess the Britannic got a bigger engine because they wanted, to quote Donut Media, *MO POWA BABEH!*
    Edit: just the box of Red Baron pizza going across the screen at 6:55 makes me laugh, even though World War 1 was both the dumbest conflict in history and just war crimes galore, I mean seriously, name a war crime and everyone involved in the conflict committed it
    Edit 2: 7:44 ever see a ocean liner with the same amount of drip as prime Ric Flair?
