  • Hi guys. On this episode of Mark's Aquatics I'll be making my new diy nitrate reactor . join me for a fun little project. I've also added some shrimp to the zebra pleco tank.

    Yeah man, nitrate tower in a fish tank - looking cool and the slow flow should really encourage anaerobic bacteria in a large but very safe environment there.

      @@MARKSAQUATICS There is no rush as I am so far behind on my videos I may never catch up, lol
      I'll let you know when / if I get time to do the proposed canister filter video and I will include it in that and also a stand alone video too. Hopefully once the manufacturing plant gets the drier installed and trade accounts become available for the biohome it will take the pressure off me and free up some time. Even an few hours a week would help me to slowly catch up.

    Very cool build, I'll definitely keep it in mind when I get deep into my new saltwater build. I've been watching your videos for a while now and have ordered up some black acrylic and solvent this week to start building my own marine overflow box, refugium, and ATO system.     Love the show as always and I had an idea for you. Make a cap like you do for the filter only make it where it fits you Aqua vacuum it stops you from sucking some of the critters you don't want to when you're having a big clean. It won't work on the smallest of critters but, it saves a lot of time and picking through the bucket. Greeting from the USA.

    This little filter is very versatile, you could put the fluidized bed media in it 'K1 ' 👍

    Great project, would be nice if you could incorporate a flow indicator so that you can always see that there is water flowing through the reactor

      A bit of thread tied around the outflow cover vents should work as an indicator.

    You improved the first version, creating the box for the pump and also the idea of putting a black square sponge to protect the pump, the flow achieved is very good, please let me know if you had reductions on your nitrates?

    Another awesome video again! Been binge watching your vids Mark and gotta say you are very inspiring. Have a small aquarium running for a year now in a small apartment atm but when I'll move to a bigger one I got some projects in my head.       You can use any media . Ceramic tubes will be ok

    Hi Mark, very neat build :) Would medium to fast growing plants significantly reduce nitrates?

      Yes plants can reduce nitrate well. Pothos is fantastic for this .

    I am trying to encourage my zebra pleco to cave up...what size caves do you find that they like to go into? Love you videos.

      I use one and a half to two inch tubes that's the open end size.

      Yes mate the prefilter is going on. Did you buy the pair of L046 that was for sale in caerphilly? They were in the Aquarist Classifieds .

      No i didnt mate im revamping everything also installing RO etc. Its the only thing i think im not doing that you are to get them to breed also instal an ATK. Lot of changes afoot so im not buying more till all thats complete.

      Yes I might make a few but I'll test this one out first. I'm not sure on the pump, It's one richard sent up to me, has no name on it.

      I would buy several from you if you do build them.
      I could you know, cut the tube but slotting and creating a proper sized disc might not be so easy. You could sell them unassembled as well. If these work with your media to create anaerobic bacteria, then they will be crazy awesome!!

    Hi Mark I am running a fluval 406 what do you think is best , to have the intake and outflow at opposite ends of the tank or both at the same end?

      Hi Lawrence. Yes have the intake on one end and the return on the other. This will give a good overall flow and keep it healthier. 😀👍

      I've used stainless steel screw in eyes and tied stones to the wood to hold it down.

      Dump it in a red hot bath tub also. That gets air out

      I put my two biggest bits of bog wood in the water butt in the garden for 10 days then splashed boiling water 💦 on it before putting it in the aquarium.

      I just empty it in to a bowl of tank water give it a swirl and and return it to the reactor.

      No it's sintered glass media and once colonised with anaerobic bacteria will just keep getting better over time.

    I thought these “anaerobic” bacterias like very low oxygen levels; wouldn’t passing the water through the media via the pump raise the oxygen levels?

      The pump is simply passing water through it. The media is so porous that there will be small areas that receive little to no oxygen.

    No worse looking than sponge filters which are an eyesore. At least the wider type provide a bit of cover for the 🍤

      Hi Noah. The laser cutter cost about £400 when I bought it.

      The laser I use is a Chinese 40w c02 laser you can find them on eBay.

    Hi mark, don’t mean to go on again about biohome cloging up making it less efficient but in my experience it does, it tock about 2 years to start to loose it efficiency and is impossible to fully clean with tank water, please let us know hoe u get on with it

      @@MARKSAQUATICS Nice :) I like how L046 Zebra plecos stay small, although I read they prefer a meaty diet. I'm trying to breed some LDA-08, Ancistus claro aka "Gold Marble plecos" - I think they could be the next big thing in tropical fish keeping b/c they eat algae & stay small enough for a 10 gallon tank. But I have not had any babies yet.
