- Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) has two types of flowers: the single, pitcher-shaped orange blossom that attracts long-tongued pollinators like hummingbirds and must be cross-pollinated to form a pea-pod shaped fruit (that, due to toxicity, should not be ingested); and a tiny, petal-less flower that creates most of the seeds. When ripe, these unassuming flowers burst open at the slightest touch, spitting seeds in all directions several feet from the plant. The fruit, in comparison, simply drops down with little fanfare.
