      What regular lightstand do you recommend (already bought the C stand you recommended n_n)

  • @neuvatn
    @neuvatn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I noticed you said to put weights on the two back legs. Isn't the sandbag supposed to go on the tallest and front leg? Off the ground to have it affect it, not only when it begins to tip over.
    Or....? I don't own one myself.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! You’re right, it should always go on the tallest leg so that it doesn’t rest on the ground. 👍

  • @lonosmond
    @lonosmond 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Much good advice, but you should add a sandbag to the base for counterweight, especially as you elevate (especially with an expensive camera attached)

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I always have sandbags on them. I just didn't want to bring them outside for this 😬

    No one has been able to respond to this question and I'm an avid fan of your channel, so hopefully you'll respond. Can you mount a Edelkrone JibONE v2 to this stand using a threaded adapter with a plate.?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used the JibONE myself, so I can't say for sure. But looking at the size/design, it looks pretty heavy. The main center column should be more than enough to support it, but I wouldn't try to mount it on the arm. 👍

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would really just be a stick, but it could kind of function like a very narrow monopod? It wouldn’t have the grip or varying height versatility of a real monopod though.

      Hi Stan! When I’m in my “studio,” the camera is about 3 feet away and I’m about 8 feet from the background. I keep the lens at 1.4, and that helps to get the background blur. The more distance you can put between your subject and the background, the better. 👍

    Great tutorial! How many c-stands is a good number to own for an indie filmmaker? I'm just thinking the number of lights times the number of diffusers times the number of black negative fill can really start to add up. From experience, how many c-stands do you tend to use per scene?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This might sound strange, but I swear I saw this same question on Reddit, I wonder if that was you? Generally speaking, have as many stands as you have room for, with at least 1 per main light. At home I have one stand for my key light and a second one that I use for additional lighting/grip gear/cameras/etc. At work we have a whole rack of them, and when my students film a typical dialogue scene, we often use 3-4 stands for lights/backdrops/mics/etc.

    Ok I purchased the c-stand for my strobe but now I want to use it for my camera. Question anyone: how do you control taking the picture with the camera all The way their?

    • @tombuck

      I like to use the Canon app on my phone, but it depends on which camera you’re using.

    the thread of my c stand has a 1/4 inch for me to mount my camera directly onto it can i just do this instead of mounting head with spigot?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure! I have another stand that works that way too and it's super handy. Although I usually do still like attaching a small ball head to it just for added versatility.

    Great video as always I would make one suggestion however. Never mount any object on the non knuckle side of the extension arm. Even though it is possible to mount a light there you should always mount on the knuckle side. Little knobs to the left large knobs to the right. You did finally mention it later on which I was happy to see because mountain on the non knuckle side could cause it to loosen and hit someone.

    thinking of using this as a really high tripod 2m+ to film wedding receptions to cover the whole reception as a wide angle camera positioned next to speakers on a corner or on the side of the stage area to capture the dance floor and what ever is happening from start to finish. weight is the only issue to carry around.

    C-stands are great of course, but with the size being equal, the leg spreader stand is much much much more stable. C-stands are prone to tipping, especially outside with even slighest wind, and no amount of sandbagging will prevent that. For studio work, great tool.

    • @mertkaracayil

      C-stands are prone to tipping? umm you must be using it wrong buddy.

      @@mertkaracayil Believe me, I don't. For quick demo, watch here th-cam.com/video/k2kdxPmcqyU/w-d-xo.html (3:30 mark). Then, for longer explanation, watch here: th-cam.com/video/K6DyCRRjQkw/w-d-xo.html (the whole video). Again, c-stands are good for perfectly level ground, absolutely no wind and light applications. When rough, professional work is considered, they don't have place there.

    Just found you channel and i think it is great!
    Do You think the C-Stand can be used for "simple" nighttime pictures? Using it with a beach recliner and flipping the camera up to the sky. i am looking for simple way to lay back and take some easy pictures.
    Thanks

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could definitely work for that, but since it’s so heavy, it probably wouldn’t be too fun to bring down to a beach. I’d search for a good tripod that has a center column with the ability to extend out horizontally 👍
