- Here's a few shots I did this week using the Canon 400mm 5.6L lens on my R6. Coming from a 7d mk ii and a 1DX mkii, I am super impressed with this camera. I'm now all in on mirrorless.
Also, The lens performs wonderfully and I couldn't be happier. AF was fast and snappy, Eye tracking is awesome. As old as the lens is, it still creates super sharp images.
IMO, this lens is sharper and works better than my Sigma 150-600 C although it is to be expected. The only issue is losing some reach but I have learned that getting closer is the key when you lose reach.
Although the focal length on the 400 is shorter, it is a lot easier to handle. Some days I want to just hand hold and be able to swing the lens around quick.

I'm glad you tried both the canon 400f5.6 and the sigma 150-600C, which is a clear choice for the canon R system in terms of sharpness and functionality. I'm using RP now, but in the future I'll switch to R6, maybe R7 if I keep RP...
the only thing keeping me from upgrading is my fear that the adapter with my 400mm will be like adding a teleconverter to the camera, which I do not have the patience for. I am glad to see that this isn't the case based on your opinion.
I have found the Canon 300mm f4 to be an excellent combination that I use on my R6. It does have IS which the 400 does not. I use it for shorter range bird captures. My best L is the 100-400 vs ii.
Speaking of 300mm. I rented a 300 2.8 lens and it was incredible albeit expensive. The 100-400 ii is a really sweet lens too
great!
Thanks!
I hope Canon comes out with an RF 400mm f5.6L lens.
LenWhistler have you seen this?
www.canonwatch.com/here-is-an-updated-canon-rf-lens-roadmap-for-the-next-2-years/
@@ScottPrincePhotography Yes I have seen that. There are 2 missing lenses that I think should be on that list - the 400mm f5.6L and 50mm f1.4.
@@len.whistler I know the 400mm f5.6L is an outstanding lens and I cant imagine why they never came out with a mkii version. I suppose the 100-400 zoom was its replacement?
An excellent combination!
Thanks for sharing these photos my friend. I am Canon7dm2&400mmf5.6 user. And ı wonder how this lens perform in rf system. Do you think R7&400mmf5.6 would be a good combination… Will there be a loss of focus point . Eye detection area loss? stg
Not sure how the 400 works on the R7 but hope it works as well as it does on my R6
Lovely video :) thank you for sharing 👍
Thank you estee!
When I shot with the Canon 7D Mark-2 the 400mm f/5.6L was one of my favorite lenses. It is a shame that other camera companies do not have a 400mm f/5.6 Prime like the Canon...
Richard I couldn’t agree more. Some of my best images came from that combo. Even today that combination can blow away modern technology in the right hands. Thanks
Great pics. I've just purchased the R6 ,waiting for delivery. Ihave the 100-400mm l mk2 . I was thinking of trading in for the rf100- 500mm but after seeing your pics I'm not sure if that's a good idea 😅.
Yeah its a tough call. I think the pros and cons of each make it a wash. The 100-400mm mk2 is an awesome lens.
Lovely video.👍
How is the IBIS with this lens?
Bravo !
Which AF is better Canon R6 or Sony A9?
Hi. I'd say they are about the same.
@@ScottPrincePhotography Thanks! And how is AF compare to 1DxII and 7DII ?
@@cannello7719 as much as I loved the 7d mkii, it had its limitations. Now the 1dx mkii is pretty nice, but I think the R6 has raised the bar. Of course the lens plays a role also..
@@ScottPrincePhotography R6 vs 1dxii, is there a difference in single point af or when using 9 point cluster (or equivalent)?
I personally don't like using AI based af modes as I prefer to stay in control.
For birds, the R6 is better.
Have you noticed any sounds coming from the camera when using the 400MM. Mine sounds like its trying to auto focus even when continuous autofocus is turned off and my finger is off the back button focus. Mine stops making a noise when the screen goes black.
Hi Richard. I don't own the R6 anymore but I vaguely remember something like that.
Sehr schön.👍 Hat Spaß gemacht sich anzuschauen. Weiter so. Viele liebe Grüße Jörn
Nice
Thanks appreciate it!
I also want to know about the IBIS. I own this lens, and I bought the R6 hoping the IBIS will stabilize it enough so that I can shoot below 1/1,200 second. I'm still waiting for the EF/RF adapter, so I haven't been able to test it yet.
Hi. I'll try your scenario today and report back. did you get the adapter yet?
@@ScottPrincePhotography Thanks Scott. I called B&H yesterday, and they said they were getting a shipment in then. But there's a lot of demand, and they didn't know if mine was in there yet. They said I'd know by maybe the 26th. So we'll see.
@@ScottPrincePhotography It would be helpful to me to know if you get any motion blur shooting hand held at 1/500 or 1/800 second. Thanks so much!
@@DBrown-ig8em I was out today with the Sigma 150-600 C lens doing a lot of testing. I'll try it in the house tonight
@@DBrown-ig8em I posted some raw images on my site, check them out here. 1/200 and 1/400 . It was hit and miss. www.scottprince.com/r6ibis/
