Photographing birds of all types
Sony a9 iii & Sony 100-400 Footage Canadian Goose landing
I've been going back and forth between the a1 and the a9 iii for shooting video, and I really dont see enough difference to make me choose one over the other. Sure the a1 has 8k but only at 29/30 fps. The majority of my footage is either 60 or 120 fps.

I dunno, I'm a bit torn on whether to keep this camera or send it back. Images look soft in stills and videos. The B&H rep told me the 200-600 doesn't pair well with the a9 iii.Seems like I'm depending on software to make my shots sharp. Doesnt seem right does it? Thoughts?
Canon 7d mkii & Canon EF 100-400 mkii Video Test

A recent outing to Betz Lake in NC. Just for kicks I wanted to shoot a video using my old 7D mkii and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Anyone else shoot video on this camera?
Ruby Throated Hummingbird

Lots of hummers in the yard this year, I love to photograph them and/or shoot videos. I'm actually moving away from still photography and into video. Albeit more challenging, it's fun.

Shot with a Panasonic HC X2000 video camera. I'm trying to move away from still photography and get into more wildlife video, and I gotta tell ya, it's more difficult than I thought. anyway, love the camera, small, hand holdable, not a bunch of ENG stuff.

I live in Apex NC now (retired) and have been working on my new garden. Started last season and a few plants made it through the winter. Ive seen a few Hummers but not many yet and really looking forward to their arrival so I can start shooting. Would love to see what you guys have done if anything.

Canon R6 tracking a Hummingbird
มุมมอง 1702 ปีที่แล้ว
The R6 tracking did a pretty darn good job keeping up with this Hummingbird as they are fast, here one second and gone the next. The way I photograph them is to utilize a single stem or bud, and keep my camera trained on that. Its difficult and frustrating to try and follow the HB around a bush or plant moving your camera/lens all over the place and hope you get one clean shot. Video/stills Can...
Ducks in Flight Canon R6
มุมมอง 1613 ปีที่แล้ว
The R6 coupled with a Canon 500mmf/4 mkii and a 1.4 extender had no problems keeping up with ducks in flight. I used the single focus point and it tracked the birds with no problems. As always, I pre focus on the area I think the action is going to occur to keep my focus time to a minute. Skip to photos 2:25
Hummingbird Photography using a Canon 1dx mkii
มุมมอง 1663 ปีที่แล้ว
A collection of Hummingbird photos I shot recently mainly using the Canon 1dx mkii, the Canon 100-400 mkii, along with the Canon 1.4 Telextender, all mounted on a Wimberley Gimbal Head. This setup worked extremely well although the 1dx mkii is a bit loud, its fast enough to capture a lot of images before the Hummer flies away wondering what the hell just happened. I've seen some videos recently...
Canon R5 Animal Eye Tracking Test
มุมมอง 8373 ปีที่แล้ว
I used a Canon 400mm 5.6L lens, all mounted on a tripod to see how the animal eye tracking worked in a stationary environment. Overall I think it did well although it did lose the eye a few times, which can be expected. Later I shot some birds in flight, and using Canons software, I did observe the focus dot was not locked on the eye as much as I had hoped. Perhaps more human error than logic a...

Beautiful flowers, John liked and subscribed to your channel
Thank you!!
Beautiful pictures! Does the AF on this setup A6000 with 200-600mm still work well at 900mm?
Beautiful.
Thank you!
I think your photos are very good, I shoot nothing but Birds in the wild and I just purchased the Sigma 150-600 with the TC-1401 extender, if my photos turn out as good as yours I will be very pleased. Thank you for the video.........
Thanks for the comment and good luck to you!
You have got a beautiful channel mate ! ☀️☀️
WOW thanks for the nice comment. I should be doing more but I'm really not that good at this. LOL. Havent found my style yet I guess
Thanks for this wonderful short video ! Greetings from France and happy new year ! ☀️☀️
Nice results I just purchased the lens for my Nikon and will probably add this later based on your results. Thanks
I'm glad you tried both the canon 400f5.6 and the sigma 150-600C, which is a clear choice for the canon R system in terms of sharpness and functionality. I'm using RP now, but in the future I'll switch to R6, maybe R7 if I keep RP...
Is the AF eye tracking working ok when sigma is on 600mm?
the only thing keeping me from upgrading is my fear that the adapter with my 400mm will be like adding a teleconverter to the camera, which I do not have the patience for. I am glad to see that this isn't the case based on your opinion.
I am considering Sigma 1.4X TC but the shots in your video look very soft or out of focus.
The images look better individually vs a video on youtube. Best bet is to always rent first! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Have the same camera. Takes nice pics still.
Back in 2003, I was the Official Headshot Photographer for MISS MARYLAND & MISS NEW JERSEY USA. I used this camera along with a 24-105? I think. I created some really nice images with this rig.
great!
Thanks!
Is this the original 100-400? Or mk2? I have a 1dx mk2, was looking at getting the original lens. How do you find the focus speeds on auto? And sharpness of the lens?
Nice and beautiful video. Thanks for sharing so lovely information.
I ordered and waiting for sigma 150-600 c to mount on R3.wondering how is the AF performing while pairing with R system .Also did u calibrate the focus on lens using dock or in camera mircofocus.appreciate your tips on this
Wow R3, nice. Because it’s a mirrorless camera, you won’t have to adjust it although I did anyway using the docking thingy. I swear, I took mine to a minus 10 and the images looked sharper to me. Enjoy the new gear!!
Beautiful pictures man! Amazing amazing
Thank you Isaac
What type of microphone are you using son 🙂
LOL. I admitted I suck at vlogging. Just trying to share some ideas thats all. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing these photos my friend. I am Canon7dm2&400mmf5.6 user. And ı wonder how this lens perform in rf system. Do you think R7&400mmf5.6 would be a good combination… Will there be a loss of focus point . Eye detection area loss? stg
Not sure how the 400 works on the R7 but hope it works as well as it does on my R6
What settings do find the sweet spot with this setup?
The good thing is with mirrorless is there is no AFMA. Honestly I mostly shoot it at full focal length for the reach. Never really zoomed with it too much. Also I never shot it at 600mm, I go to 600 then back off a touch. 600 seems a bit soft for me. Could be my lens thou.
hello it looks great. saludos
Greetings from Cordoba Spain. Thanks for your videos. I am a happy owner of an A6000 with the Sony 70-350mm. But I would like to buy the 200-600 in the future. Is it a combination that works well? Does the autofocus work properly? Thank you!
Haven't had much luck with the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter on my 150-600 Sigma and Canon 80d and lens wide open. Images were softer than if I just cropped the image more without the using converter. Also depending on what you are trying to shoot the autofocus is slower and does not work well with lower contrast subjects or in low light situations.
Hi Robert. Im assuming you have adjusted the lens and converter using the usb docking station? Also i found taking thr lens off of "Full" helped a bit. I also found pre focusing on an area ahead of time helped a lot. Meaning if ducks were landing in the same area the lens wouldnt have to work as hard to find focus. But yeah in the end, the 1.4 struggles.
@@ScottPrincePhotography Thanks Scott, I'll pick up a docking station.
@@robertpapps3618 Great. Kind of a pain in the ass to use the docking station but you can really dial in the AF with it. Download the software from sigma website. The docking station also keeps the lens firmware up to date.
Amazing sharp images
Thanks you’re very kind
Scott, did you take the aspect down to a 1.6 crop in order to get the better responce ? or another ratio - Thanks
Hey Michael.. been a while since I made this video. Believe I shot full frame with the extender. As you know the longer the focal length the more difficult it becomes to find the birds in the view finder when you bring the camera up to your face.
I gotta say, I now use a Canon R6 but the 1DX mkii creates some really awesome images. I may buy another one soon. True, it's heavy but wow!
Thank you for this practical look at eye tracking in real time. PS. Purchased your e-book earlier today and just finished reading it. Will work on the techniques you have laid out. Excellent book, real-world practical guidance and examples!!
HI Mike thank you. I'd be happy to work with you one on one if needed or have any questions about the book and or techniques. scott @scottprince.com

You produce truly amazing photos. It's always a pleasure to see your work! I hope you have a good winter season!
WOW!. Thanks so much. You made my day.
Can you comment on the focusing speed on moving objects? I want to use it on an R6. Currently I use a 300mm 2.8 II + 2x TC, but sometimes it's too much to carry around. I can live with f/6.3. Thanks.
Overall its not bad. I definitely recommend this lens. But like all lenses, as you know, it's always wise to pre focus on an area/distance where you suspect the birds may or are flying.
@@ScottPrincePhotography Thanks. I was also trying to figure out if this would be better than Canon's 100-400 II + 1.4TC at f/8.
@@soak000 I use the Canon 100-400 mkii + 1.4 TC routinely on my R6 and favor that much more than the Sigma 150-600 lens. Quite a jump in price thou as you know.
@@ScottPrincePhotography Thanks for clearing my thoughts - I don't need another lens. I also have the 100-400 II + 1.4 TC and it works very well on multiple bodies. Thanks for taking time replying.
Beautiful hummingbirds and fantastic photos. L 6 Greetings.
Thank you!
Do you have Instagram ?
Yes. sprincephotos. And you?
Great photos. I'd love to photograph some hummingbirds, but unfortunately they do not occur in the Czech Republic. Great video👍
Thank you Sebastian
Would love to photograph the Hummingbird but not resident here in the UK. Great shots of this awesome bird ! 👍😍
Thanks so much. Means a lot coming from you!
Have you noticed any sounds coming from the camera when using the 400MM. Mine sounds like its trying to auto focus even when continuous autofocus is turned off and my finger is off the back button focus. Mine stops making a noise when the screen goes black.
Hi Richard. I don't own the R6 anymore but I vaguely remember something like that.
Great video and beautiful pictures! I just subscribed!
Thanks!!
Потрясающе!
I am shopping for a lens for my R6 as well. I have been using a micro four thirds system with the Panasonic/Leica 100-400 which gives me the equivalent of 800mm with really nice sharpness. The focusing system on the camera (Panasonic G9) is not great but otherwise I really like the setup. I bought an R6 package that included the f11 600mm which is fine but in addition to the tiny aperture it limits the autofocus area quite a bit which is a problem. So I find myself shopping for a lens that has equal reach to the 800mm equivalent I am used to. I see that the Sigma with extender is good for 840 equivalent. I may give that a try. I am interested in the Canon 100-500mm as well but definitely would need an extender for that to get to at least 700mm.
I am thinking of buying this combo because I am coming from a micro four thirds system with a 100-400mm zoom equivalent to 800mm with the 2X crop factor. The package I bought came with the Canon fixed f11 600 but I find it really needs full daylight and I miss the extra 200mm that I lost when going to the R6 and that lens. At least with the Sigma I would have the option of using the TC when I really feel like I need it.
Great pics. I've just purchased the R6 ,waiting for delivery. Ihave the 100-400mm l mk2 . I was thinking of trading in for the rf100- 500mm but after seeing your pics I'm not sure if that's a good idea 😅.
Yeah its a tough call. I think the pros and cons of each make it a wash. The 100-400mm mk2 is an awesome lens.
Bravo !
💖💖💖💖💖💖
👍👍👍👍
You lose quite a bit of light with the 1.4 going to f/8 so it does affect focus speed. And it also affects image quality to some extent. Still an excellent lens, though.
Hey Scott, Have you tired this len without the extender with the R5, I'm thinking about this lens with my R5 but unsure from this if you like it or hate it?
Hi Darknstormy. Although I dont own the lens anymore, it worked well on the R6. I bought a used 500 mm f/4 mkii lens that I probably wont keep. Although the 500 is awesome I'm getting tired of these big heavy lenses and dragging my tripod around. I was actually considering another Sigma 150-600 lens. Easy to carry and throw up for birds in flight, so yeah I think it would work well for you and you can't beat the price. Let me know if you get one. I sold the R6 and got the R5 and love it. SP
@@ScottPrincePhotography thanks mate. I just don't like the new RF 600 and 800 as they are only F11
@@darknstormyimages Yeah I rented the 800 and sent it back the same day. Not for me.
Nice work
Thank you Robert!!
Great Pictures!
Thanks David!
I have found the Canon 300mm f4 to be an excellent combination that I use on my R6. It does have IS which the 400 does not. I use it for shorter range bird captures. My best L is the 100-400 vs ii.
Speaking of 300mm. I rented a 300 2.8 lens and it was incredible albeit expensive. The 100-400 ii is a really sweet lens too
