  • Fiona Bruce presents an hour of topical debate from Barnsley, South Yorkshire. On the panel: Dehenna Davison, elected in 2019 as the first Conservative MP for Bishop Auckland; Labour’s shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson MP; musician Winston Marshall, former member of Mumford & Sons; Alastair Campbell, one of the architects of New Labour; and Tim Stanley, journalist and Daily Telegraph columnist.
Boris Johnson has announced his resignation as prime minister after less than three years in Number 10, saying: "No one in politics is remotely indispensable." Speaking from Downing Street, he thanked the millions of people who voted Conservative at the last election, and said the reason he fought so long to remain in office was because "I thought it was my job, my duty and my obligation to you."

Tim Stanley is a mixed bag of contradictory views. Even as a Brexiter he admits he has sympathy for Remainers because many Remainer warnings have become true, but on Johnston he thinks he was no more corrupt or dishonest than any other recent Prime Minister. He is a strange man.

The scale and number of Lies used to secure Brexit was on an industrial scale an from multiple political figures and campaigners, but the Iraq dossier only really included one decisive possible lie/misinterpretation which was the 45-minute weapons launch claim. Boris lied in many ways over Brexit as did all the different Brexit campaigns. nice try, but Iraq was all on Blair and his aggerated single lie/misinterpretation, wherars Brexit has been a conspiracy of lies from multiple sources, chief among them Johnston

@@azar1354 i also wasn't against the Iraq war but I am against the reasons and the basis upon which Blair chose to take us in. It's true that at least 5 to 6 million of the Brexit voters were always going to vote Brexit regardless of all the lies from Johnson and Garage, but in particular Johnson's lies helped get undecided voters to flop to leave and helped persuade other possible remain voters not to bother to vote.

@@wendynicholss6886 well Wendy.....the NHS in real terms has had services constantly cut over the last twelve years. Also nurses now have to pay to receive their training and the pay when they have completed their training is so poor that they have to rely on food banks. We have lost staff in all areas of the service who returned to to mainland Europe because they no longer feel welcome in a country that since 2016 has not exactly been welcoming to Europeans. It has also experienced creeping privatisation of ancillary services that are run for profit instead of service to the public. Long term the government have already had meetings with American health care providers and are currently welcoming them into areas of YOUR NHS that once was able to give good care from cradle to end of life. But don't worry you won't have to be concerned about the NHS for much longer, as soon it will no longer exist. When you get sick I hope you will have the money to afford the American style health coming your way. As for this nurse I will be moving to a country where people care 👍

When Boris was only buried in half a lie
And was taking home that his popularity had taken a slide
His poor feet began to stutter
So he lay face down in the gutter
And a pole cat came up and settled down by his side
Then they sang "It's All Fair Weather"
    And "Good Fellows Get Together"
Till a lady passing by was heard to say
She says, "You can tell a man who boozes and floozies
By that company he so chooses"
And the pole cat got up and slowly walked away.

The Norway option. Tory Boy, do you think that the Tories will sell that when they are meant to be the Party of Low Tax??? Norwegians pay about 50 per cent of their income in tax, though they do get some fantastic benefits from that. Also they didn't spaff away their North Sea Oil, and they have a very small population. Pull the other one.
I agree that both hard Brexiters and hard Remainers need to move on for now. Many people were in the middle, and jumped one way or another, and they are not happy with how it turned out because of Tory attitudes to it. If we can show we have a trustworthy government and work with Europe where it is important, then at some point we may get a good offer to go back in. For the next 10 years at least, I can't see that happening. So lets get rid of this awful Tory government, and I hope for a coalition between Labour and Lib Dems so more people are represented.

@@azar1354 Last time I checked, neither my country, Denmark, nor Norway or Finland were part of Sweden, let alone governed from Stockholm. About three years ago, the Danish intelligence agency disrupted a terrorist attack because they were tipped off by Israel. You make independence sound like self-isolation akin to feudal Japan during the Shogan era which is a strawman that only exists in your mind because, guess what, the United States cooperates with Canada and Mexico. All countries, large and small, cooperate, that does not make them not independent. By that logic, the UK is not an independent state and should really be governed from Washington D.C.

Alastair Campbell seems blithely unaware that his former boss's memoir, A Journey, talks about his quiet ruminations in the library at Chequers that led him to be the world's main salesperson for war on Iraq. Blair says he thought Iraq and the world would be better off without Saddam UNDER ANY POSSIBLE CIRCUMSTANCES. Blair thought that even though Amnesty International would have told him that in the two years before the March 2003 invasion the regime was killing mere "scores" of its opponents (far fewer than we would kill in the vain attempt to restore safety and stability to Iraq and the region). Elsewhere in his memoir, Blair praises his colleague Ann Clwyd, whose contribution to the spin campaign that led us into a war that caused the deaths of more than a million people who would still be alive had we not invaded was a totally false story about Saddam's opponents being fed alive into a plastic shredding machine.

Regarding Tony Blair who was accused of lying to parliament by some MPs, a memo was published by Chilcot revealing that Blair had written to US President George W Bush, eight months before the 2003 invasion, promising him: "I will be with you, whatever". Make of it what you will. Guardian. "Tony Blair: I express more sorrow, etc" 6/7/2016.
