My grandmother was Mary Monroe. I used to see pictures and emblems that said “Dread God” and it always scared me. I thought that I should fear god and it scared the shit out of me.

@@CB-ii2uyNice one. That sounds like what it meant. I also heard a while back that it may also have meant put all your fear into fearing God, but fear noone else.

This account is of the Battle of Drumchatt, 1501, and it is not accepted as historical. There is possibly some sort of basis though: MacKenzies may have ambushed a contingent of Munros on MacKenzie territory - such clan ambushes were known. But the account - known to have been propagated by the MacKenzies themselves, is not backed by evidence. Indeed, it is at odds with it. For instance, no evidence has been found of any depleted activity immediately following this. Had the Munros etc seen the losses described, the impact would have been very obvious. One leading expert also pointed to the variation of the account, becoming more and more dramatic over generations. The consensus amongst historians, specialising in Scottish history of this period, is that the battle most likely did not occur, at least not in any recognisable way that would align with the MacKenzie version.
