I remember being on the M6 motorway nr Scotland and they (a coach) pulled into a service station and they had a proper farm shop and the range of pies was GREAT! good prices too and they had ducks wandering about - wonder how many ''fall into the boot of a car!''
That looks amazing. I would've loved to have seen one of their pasties too... Cornish pasties are my absolute favourite. Perhaps you should consider cooking a proper cornish pastie :D I have been to Cornwall a few times, and every single time the proper cornish pasties from the little bakeries there absolutely blow my mind.
When I was visiting a friend in Brisbane, the first restaurant she took me to was Yatala Pies. We were extremely hungover hehe, and let me tell you; the Yatala chunky beef pie with some hot sauce is amongst the best hungover cures in the world! Delicious, rich, comforting and spicy (Due to the hot sauce). Good value for money too! One of my best fast food memories ever! Thanks Grego for taking me for a trip down memory lane. I almost got misty eyed here!:D
Gosh it's been years since I had a Yatala pie. I used to have family in Qld so would visit a couple of times a year. Yatala was always on the itinerary as was Sizzler (since Victorian restaurants closed many years ago). Now I'm in the mood for a pie.

Looks good Greggo but I found with a lot of pies, bakers put gelatine in the gravy to pad out the meat giving it that jelly texture and the flavour gets quite muted? Kind of a thin flavour anyway, that's the best I can describe it. I like the ones with mince and onions packed in there and bound with just a bit of gravy (without the gelatine) but you'd probably be looking at twice the price though. You could recreate it? :D
I agree with Steven Nashington, the oomph you were missing was the tomato sauce, a serious omission in my view, but that pie looked fantastic. Another great review Greggo!

That is not a very common Meat Pie filling in Aus. Most common fillings are standard Steak Mince, Steak and Onion, Steak and Mushroom, Chicken and Vege, Steak pie with Potato Mash on the top of the pie (sometimes with Mushy Peas and Gravy!) and a Curry Chicken Pie is becoming more popular. Only Meat Pie I have ever tried in my 30 years with Cheese inside was in April, it was a hybrid Cheeseburger Pie! (Hamburger patty, Cheese, Ketchup, Mustard inside the Pie Crust)

Yatala pies days of being any good are 25 years too far gone. Since the shop moved down to the roundabout in the 90s the pies have tasted like shit. Their caramel tarts are top notch still
Pepper steak pie sounds like it might have that something extra. The best pie I have ever eaten was a 'mexican' pie which had lots of chilli in it. Why they don't make a chilli steak pie I just don't know !

Our favourite pie place, have to have mushy peas with that pie. Also for a change try the curry pie, it great.
Breakfast Creek Hotel at Bowen Hills also make superior pies.. they cost about $8 but they are 3 inches deep with real chunks of eye fillet..
