  • Tonight, we take a break from our usual campaign to indulge in a bit of nostalgia with a session of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition.
    After rolling up four new heroes, the party accepted what seems to be a simple task from a wizard; deliver a mysterious box to another wizard in a far-off town, and accept payment. Easy money. Or...so it seemed.
    If you enjoyed this session, I would ask that you consider making a donation to the SOS Children's Villages charity through the Heroes Save Villages campaign, which can be found at the link below.

    What i love about AD&D is how dangerous combat actually is. D&D 5th edition, while good, makes me feel way too strong tbh. Like im not worried about any combat at all.
    I was born in 93, but 2nd edition D&D was my jam.

    • @DungeonMusings

      I totally agree, Sonic. I still love a lot about 5e, but I adore how dangerous and how much fun AD&D 2e combat is (particularly with the house rules we have incorporated over the course of the campaign).

      Honestly it's more about the DM than the game version. I have a 5E DM who is a... lets be nice and say "Dark Souls Enthusiast" who loves to send over leveled stuff our way.

    • @ADT1995
      @ADT1995 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@eclipsegst9419while it is true that a DM can adjust the difficulty and can make a game challenging (I've been able to do it in my 5e game) the system still has a lot to do with it. I have a lot easier time with making my combats interesting and challenging in 3e and 2e, especially 2e, because 2e was designed with the idea that combat was to be avoided if possible. I do not actually enjoy killing player characters, but I do want the game to be a challenge and for surviving to feel like an accomplishment (this is even more true for me when I'm a player), my group is like-minded and while we've pretty much settled on 3e as our go-to (which is significantly more lethal than 5e, but significantly less lethal than 2e) we do play and enjoy all three editions.
      Sorry for the rambling, but yeah the TLDR is that you aren't wrong, but the system does make a huge difference.

      I used to run 2nd edition as well as play and i had a campaign that the antagonist were pirates. In the final battle i had the leader all kitted out and buffed, it was going to be an epic battle. One of my players crit killed him with a single arrow.

    The thing that i miss the most from 3e onward was the amazing initiative system ad&d 2E had. On paper it sounds complicated but in practice is really inmersive and keeps players engaged and promoted descriptions and team play. The stupid rotatory turns from modern d&d simply tells the players to take a smoke break between turns.

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      100% agree with this. I love how the shared initiative brings everyone's focus back to the table at the start of each round, and how it gives them a moment of shared triumph or defeat, each round. Love it.
      When I run this in person, I use an oversized dice to roll, both, my initiative, and then for the players to roll. When a player loses initiative, they pass the dice to their left.

    • @oxylepy2
      @oxylepy2 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is the second reason I'm learning 2e. The main reason being that I feel it can be simpler to make and understand a character. Modern D&D is power fantasy, it really seems like 2e, depending on the homebrew rules/books allowed, starts everyone off as little more than a commoner and then they get their cool stuff with time.

My players are a mix old school experts and folks coming from modern games, so it has been interesting to see how they respond to the old school play (particularly the danger of old school combat and the need for training to gain a level, which I use in this game). Fortunately, all of the players have responded overwhelmingly positively to our 2e games (both, this one and our Icewind Dale game). :)

      @DungeonMusings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words, Rick! Though....I hate to tell you that we do actually use the gold = XP rules in this (including for magic items found). :)
      I had been using those rules for about a year in our Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea campaign (an old school game based on 1st ed AD&D), and those rules make finding a monster's horde or discovering a magic item all the cooler because it means that you ALSO get a sweet bundle of experience points to go along with the cash and/or magic item.
      I have heard others also argue that, by giving more xp for loot than for killing/defeating monsters, you actually incentivize recovering loot over combat (which, when paired with a potentially deadly and unpredictable combat system, makes it desirable to avoid combat). I do not fully agree with that, but I do know that when my players find a horde of goodies that, not only gives them more walking-around money, but also allows them to gain another level, it makes the reward even more meaningful. :)

    I ran my party through night below all the way to the end (and beyond into Pathfinder 1e believe it or not). This is easily my favorite ad&d module. The dark sun setting is such a good idea for this module and I never thought of it. I chose an uninhabited area of forgotten realms to begin with (unther), then extraplanar and even extraplanetary within the pathfinder setting. I'm so excited to see what you do with this module. My party got overpowered rather quickly (but it was a lot of lucky rolls and a lot of DM allowances such as a player that focused on poisons and made quick work of the book 3 aquatic battles with multiple 20s)

    As a kid I was gifted a copy of the first edition PHB and was stoked! Later in years everyone was diving into second edition, played as a character a couple times but don't recall rules much etc. Now its 2021 and I'm considering purchasing 2nd edition as I gave up on 5th, I DMed a game I created, it was fun but didn't like how players can't die or rarely from poor decisions. Why, so their feelings weren't hurt? I liked the DMG of 5th lots but I miss the retro vibe of earlier editions of the game from my memory. Some of the races of 5th I thought were pure cheese. So ya your game here is getting me warmed up to 2nd here...I think I'll be going 2nd edition...

    love seeing AD&D being streamed. Night Below is fantastic and works naturally very well in the Forgotten Realms setting. i saw Night Below on DTRPG as a print-on-demand but it just isn't the same; you'd have to specially print the handouts and maps and stuff. still though, might pick it up just because it's such a great campaign. trying to find an original copy is expensive and difficult. great stream though!

The only reason I rarely play it is that I've mostly forgotten how, never really learned the game in the old ways, although I was playing it back then. I always charge one level (or 1 Con for level 1 characters), no more, no less; for resurrections of any spell level or type of spell because of nostalgia from 2E which imposed a harsher and more lasting tax.

    Recently getting back into 2e again after a long hiatus, so very pleased to find such a series and that the love for 2e is still strong! It is still my absolute favourite version of the game.
    Just curious how your spell durations are being run and tracked with weapon speed initiative? For example, Dormen is using Color Spray which stuns for X rounds. Say it caused a stun for 1 round - do you include the current round, plus give the next full round? So with a 6 round stun, it would be the current round plus another 6 full rounds?

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Welcome back to AD&D 2e! We have been having a blast with it over the past year or so.
      The way I run spell effect duration, I track it by rounds it effects the target (so, a three round duration stun would rob the target of three rounds of actions).

    • @alexanderfinch2234

      @@DungeonMusings Yes it's great to discover again and have so much content to go through here. Makes picking rules up again a lot easier and Night Below seems a good place to start. I also hope WotC do some nice hardback reprints of 2e stuff for the 50th anniversary.
      Ah thanks, that makes sense and seems fair regarding duration. Just one thing, if the spell target was a player with two attacks, would you 'rob' them of their end of round attack and track that as one full round of effect against them? (i.e. player already took their first attack before spell took effect)

    This was great. I know this version of D&D from video games only - which ignore or hide many of the rules. It was great to see it in action. I notice that there were no "kits" - is that from another version, or was it left out because it just adds a lot of unnecessary complexity.

    So what's everyone's opinion on 5E vs 2E? Curious what you all think of what they did with the experience table for going up levels in 5E.

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without getting into "edition wars" territory, I will just say that 2e offers something closer to the experience I want at the table than 5e would, for this campaign and our Night Below game (though I use houserules in both). If I was going for a different experience at the table, I would consider using 5e or one of the other Modern games (I am quite fond of PF 2e).

    • @Lightmane
      @Lightmane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DungeonMusings I prefer 1st and 2nd edition too, but I'm told 5e is very well written, but in my opinion the experience point chart was totally designed for kids, so their character goes up really easy and fast, which, also my opinion, completely goes against the very concept of the game, which is that it's supposed to be hard to go up levels, so I'm just trying to see what others think about it.

    • @christopherdecator9742
      @christopherdecator9742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First couple of levels go up pretty quick in 5e. Things seem to even out and take longer and longer to level in our games. I like to incorporate and encourage the downtime rules which pads out an adventurer's carrier. Otherwise travel time is all that separates PCs from constant adventuring. I've been running a 5e group once a week for about a year now (until recently) and they made 5th level. Its a Night Below adaptation by the way!

    DM Kevin, I am starting a new 2e campaign in Greyhawk? Where would you recommend starting a Greyhawk campaign? Would you recommend any particular module?

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Congrats on kicking off a Greyhawk campaign, Joseph! The module, as written, is quite a bit of a railroad and has a TON of block text, but I still really like the adventure "Patriots of Ulek" as a way to launch a Greyhawk game set after the Greyhawk Wars (it was published at the same time as the "From the Ashes" boxed set).
      I am biased on this one, but "Night Below" can be set in Greyhawk and has a lot of ways that you can tweak the campaign to fit the sensibilities and needs of your table.
      Finally, while it is written for 1e AD&D, "The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh" can be a ton of fun and easily converted to 2e (as can the two follow-up modules, if you characters want to continue the story).
      Hope that these help and congrats again for kicking off the campaign!
