    Your AD&D content is what hooked me lol
    Glad to see this. I am a die hard 1e AD&D fan, started in the 90's sometime.
    Love it, keep it up!

    Awesome. The DM rocks. It’s disappointing to see such a small audience for something so awesome… oh well. There’s 11,000 men of culture watching with me.

    Oh man! It's been a while since we played AD&D 2nd Edition. Actually we ran an epic campaign 2004 an then everyone got something other to do with their lives, you know. Finishing College, the first serious job, Children, and all that stuff. It's good to see you guys playing it. Feels somehow like home. And Kevin, you do a great job as a DM, righ?! I mean you fill it. Night Below is awesome, but you got to know how to do it. And, man, you know how to do it! Thanx for sharing the thing. I'm litarally at the moment starting there to prep it for friends, because you inspired me to do so. Rock on!

    @DungeonMusings, have you found any online AD&D 2e Encounter Builders? I'm planning a future campaign to run for my parents and uncle who only play 2e. They've got 30+ years DMing, so they have no need for extra resources, but also cant really help me figure it out with just the DMG.

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did come across any such resources, myself, but the idea of "balanced" encounters (where you could calculate the challenge of an encounter using a combined difficulty rating of the adversaries) really only came in with 3rd edition.
      You could use total Hit Dice as a rough rule of thumb (for instance, if you have 8 total "levels" of heroes, you might use 8 hit dice of adversaries for an encounter), but that approach breaks down when you start seeing special powers introduced for your monsters, which makes them more powerful than their HD might suggest.
      When I ran 2e, I tended to design encounters for 2e with an eye towards more what made sense for the setting/situation, than for game balance, per se, trusting that the players would figure out how to approach the situation. It made playing 2e a very different experience than other D&D-based games (where I definitely do use those balancing rules), where the players had to think beyond "is this an easy or a hard fight?"
      Sorry I could not offer more direct advice on balance, but I hope that these comments help a bit and that you had a blast with your game!

      @nerdthemojibts4666 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@DungeonMusings I appreciate it, man. Your response helped me dial in how ill balance my encounters more, so that's a win for me. My uncle and dad both gave slightly similar answers when I asked them, but yours went a little more in depth.
      So far, I've only played 2e, but I'm writing a campaign for some family in 5e, and eventually 2e for my elders.

    At some point when I'm having to search for a name I just give them a name, and remind myself that count whatshisface times is now count Eadwine
    In all seriousness I keep a list of mostly Anglo Saxon names that I can assign to an NPC. Maybe sometimes I switch to Old Norse, Visigothic, or Gaelic depending on the culture that sound sufficiently fantasy enough if I don't want to give him a name like John (although I've been known to do that too)

    It is a real shame that you don't have these awesome actual plays (Dark Sun, Conan, Grey Hawk etc.) on Itunes. :) Being a father I have much more time listening to these at Work.

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the suggestion, Mork! I actually tried to convert them, late last year, but it turns out that Anchor (where I post the Dungeon Musings Podcast) is NOT happy when you try to upload a 4 hour session. I need to take the time to set up a proper iTunes podcast for the actual plays, but that remains on the "to do" list, for now.

    I am running Night Below at the moment, (or I should say I adapted Night Below) except in 5e and in the Eberron Setting, based in Northern Karrnath. Got the hardcover POD from Drivethru! I am really wanting to run it in AD&D 2e though. I haven't played 2nd Edition (except some of the PC games), and I saw the recommendation of "For Gold and Glory" on your video about 2e. I suppose I am wondering whether I will miss anything by using that set of rules as opposed to the 2013 release of 2nd edition rules. I know the latter were said to have particularly poor artwork and layout, but would it be a more comprehensive set of rules? Or would "For Gold and Glory" suffice? I also really want to get into the Dark Sun setting and I think doing that in 2e will definitely do the setting much more justice!

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we already touched base on the Discord channel, but For Gold and Glory is a decent substitute for the AD&D 2e core books (and the PDF is free). :)

    Didn't Duke Robillard free Iuz?. Under Greyhawk Castle, if memory serves. Then him and Rary moved to the Bright Desert to plot. That was where my first party as a AD&D player met their end. Did get a lot further with a Ranger character who was last seen [along with the rest of the party] in Babayaga's Hut. Hours upon hours of fun.

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That could be right. I am not really a stickler for canon. I am sorry to hear about your doom in the Bright Desert too (though that is awesome to hear about Baba Yaga's hut). :)

    • @Eawahwah
      @Eawahwah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DungeonMusings That fact had stuck in my head from that time. The DM must have read it out in the blurb from the Bright Desert. It was a trip sanctioned by Greyhawk council for what was a scouting mission. We brought our doom on ourselves for being cocky buggers. I/we learnt our lesson anyway!.

    Was looking forward to watching it since I enjoyed 2e and Greyhawk but I might have missed it. Was there a session zero or have the players played 2e before? 20 minutes in and it’s explanatory type talk. ....was about to fast forward and perfect timing...adventure background of location for starting!
    An hour in and I hooked!! Fun session going on.

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Tim! There is a session zero in this game (you can find it at the top of the playlist for this campaign), but we had characters slowly trickling in to join the party, over the course of the first couple of sessions in those early days. :)

    did you create the module in roll20 from scratch? Thats a great port, cool maps and handouts. Is there a way to import other peoples modules? i.e someone makes an old dnd module like barrier peaks for roll20, offers it up as a package, download and import into new game???

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words, Spencer! I drew the map and, depending on how far you are in the campaign, all the PC portraits. I loaded all images into the Roll20 game and used one of the two AD&D 2e character sheets already in Roll20. Roll20 offers several options for subscriptions (including free access), but I cannot recall what the restrictions are on loading images/using dynamic lighting for each.

    What games are you actively playing now live?

    • @DungeonMusings
      @DungeonMusings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We post the schedule for the coming week on the Community tab of the Dungeon Musings channel, which lists all upcoming games for that week, but our ongoing campaigns right now are two AD&D 2e campaigns, a biweekly campaign playing Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea, and a pick-up game playing 5th edition D&D in the World of Warcraft.
      We also run a bunch of one-shots/short campaigns, running a variety of different games, but those are rarely announced more than a week or so before.
