Jayanta, a poor doctor, falls in love with the rich Mallika who gives him her mother's jewelry to study medicine in Europe However, her grandfather, who is against their relationship, creates misunderstandings between the two and plans to wed Mallika off to a rich doctor. Jayanta comes back to find Mallika in a psychotic vegetative state resulting out of the anxiety and depression of being estranged from Jayanta. He sets out on a mission to devote all his life to cure her.
This was Bengali cinema's first color film. But the Gevacolor process used deteriorated and only black and white copies remain.

Yep, I'm pretty surprised by the number of views in such a short time. I guess these Bengali films on which I sometimes work are beginning to catch on. Interesting question. First, let me assure you I cut nothing from the film. I included all that was in my source. Because the subtitles were messed up with my source, I followed that other version here on TH-cam very carefully while working on the film. I needed many subtitles from that other version. As I went along, there were many places where bits and pieces were missing in my version, a sentence or two here, a sentence or two there. There were 2 main places where several minutes were missing. One was a long shot of scenery. The other was more important, and that was when the first 2 exchanges of letters between Uttam and Suchitra took place after he went to Europe. Why was so much cut? I don't know. It made no sense to me. Maybe the former copyright owners decided they had to cut this way to shorten it for VCD, and used that heavily edited version for the DVD later on also. I don't really know. I saw no sign that parts were of such poor quality or had degraded so much over the years. that they were cut. You are curious; I was angry. But it often happens with Indian films on home video that they aren't the same length as seen in the movie theaters once upon a time. It's really annoying. Thank you for your interest.
