Read it and weap America. This was the last time on television that 2 people with different opinions could debate civilly

This movie is a great classical example of a good thriller. The first guy is delusional, we now miss these kind of movies.

I'm with Ebert 100% on this. Fear is a great, top notch thriller that is seriously underrated. The performances are outstanding especially Mark Wahlberg who is very effectively creepy and William Petersen as the dad. This film just gets better and better with age. James Foley is one of my favorite filmmakers. At Close Range, Glengarry Glen Ross, After Dark My Sweet and Fear are all superb! Not sure what he was thinking with the Fifty Shades films he did though. Guess he needed a paycheck.

I agree. Mark W. acting and delivery wasn't great, but granted, it was the beginning of his acting career AND it works bc he's essentially a psychopath.

Leave it up to Siskel to trash a good film. I stopped caring about Siskel's critiques when he proved to continously trash good films. Hence, The Silence of the Lambs, and that film won every category of the Oscars that year. Ebert was on point

I was surprised by this review- tradition dictates that Ebert would've called the film out for being trite, and Siskel would've appreciated the melodrama. It was exactly the opposite.

Fear was terrible. Ebert defending that 1996 schlock shock film is laughable. Wasted talent indeed.

In this case, I actually expected both guys to dump on this film.

I always hated when Siskel wouldn't let Ebert get out a complete sentence, especially after having been able to give his complete thoughts on the movie uninterrupted first.

Ebert is the G.O.A.T.! He is continuously proven to be ahead of his time and his critiques hold up so well.

Siskel got his phone cut off right after this show aired. He ran to his front door and saw Mark yelling "Let me in the house!!!!"

Pretty standard scary stalker thriller featuring a good performance from Marky Mark. Cape Fear, Unlawful Entry, Hollywood was churning out these films every other week from the early to mid 90's.

I both love and hate this movie so I kind of understand how they are divided on it. I like the suspense and some of the encounters but some parts just make me cringe.

The movie is very suspenseful and then the end becomes a fucking slapstick comedy and the brother loses his soal. Mark wallberg also goes flying out the window to like 50 fucking ft not down but just the length but in the air and then he goes down just from being thrown out normally too.

I liked the movie, but I do see Gene’s reservations

  • @christhornycroft3686

What Gene forgets is that this movie wasn’t made for fathers. It was my ex in high school’s favourite movie. It was made for teenage girls. Sure, a 50 year old man should be able spot this sleazebag a mile away. But if you’re 16 or whatever age Reese Witherspoon is supposed to be here, all you see is this attractive, buff older guy who wants you and says enough nice things to you to get you hooked. Girls especially that age are attracted to bad boys. The fact that the father sees through him and the daughter doesn’t is incredibly realistic. She might sense his “dark side,” but like many teenage girls, she sees herself as the one who can tame whatever darkness he has and as long as he’s just a nut around other people, he’s a protector for her, not a threat. And the more dad voices his displeasure, the more it makes her hot for the guy. It’s like when people pointed out Donald Trump’s obvious issues and hypocrisy. It just made his supporters more defensive of him. Did Gene have kids?

Siskel sounds so pretentious. Won’t even give this film a chance. Really was satisfying to see Ebert rip him apart.

So many good movies could have been great if the filmmakers could have just figured out the ending, instead of inexplicably and jarringly turning them into monster movies in the final act. Fear, Training Day, Collateral were well on their way to being excellent if they could have stuck the landing.

Siskle doesn't get the movie was for teenage girls, girls who want bad boys but don't know when they are actually involved with a criminal/abusers/losers.
