Learn how to convert a video taken during the day to look like a night shot! Day For Night conversion tutorial now available on my TH-cam channel! Check it out :)
Depending on how you use it, it can be used to even out the lighting and actually make it easier. As long as the light remains even enough to pass for night you'll be fine :)
Good luck with your film making career. No matter which country you live in, there's plenty of great sceneries and you can always holiday-travel to places all over the world if that tickles your fancy. I like Australia, climate is warmer and people are friendly
This is one technique. Often for big budget production they also have a bazillion light on set so they can really shoot any time of the day, but this is a quick and dirty solution :)
I reckon that you are my favorite film tutorial channel on TH-cam. Even though I haven't watched one of you videos for a while, I was pleasantly surprised by a huge wave of relief when I discovered that you had done a tutorial on this. Everything about your tutorials is brilliant: the VERY clear explanation and instructions, the excellent results which look very professional and even your friendly sometimes humorous approach. Really, well done and thank you!! I really hope you keep up the awesome work!!! :D :D
Thank you very much for the awesome feedback. A lot of time goes into each tutorial and it's really great to hear that people are enjoying the videos and find them easy to follow. There's so many boring and badly done tuts on TH-cam, I'm glad I'm avoiding falling into that category - also nice to know I'm not the only one with my 'special' kind of humour haha! Thank you :)
Yup, videocopilot has some awesome stuff on it. There are a couple of good day for night tutorials out on TH-cam, but I wanted to create one to cover that aspect off as it seems to be a common question :)
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial :) I don't think I will do one on my intro simply because it's 99.9% hand animated. I used the Twitch plug-in from videocopilot for the jitter effect.
Tip -> You can get better results if you replace the sky completely, to a night-sky image .. can work better, this one looks constant, while the sky can be really complex sometimes :) The more details, the better. But nice tutorial, keep up the work :)
i really wished you could do nuke tuts...the way you explain in such detail and simplicity... is what makes you a great and da best "you tube tutor for A.E" ...quality tuts for free....tobias wish you all the luck bro....
Hey, thanks for this! That was very helpful, educational, and informative! I look forward to seeing more of your videos! You just earned a new subscriber! :)
Man, love your videos. When I grow older (I'm 15 now), I want to make short films (and yea, i'm actually already doing it now) and maybe I'll move to America or Australia only because of the amazing landscape (Canyons/Deserts/Whatever). Sounds stupid but Germany is like ... just forest and towns. How was it for you when you moved to Australia or let's say, why did you move to Australia?
The highlights are overexposed. Next time, try to get the exposure right or dont use white suits. And dont get the sky in the shot :) Or get Sony A7s and shoot it at night :)
Am I the only one who thinks, that its not even closely looking like its shot at night? I think the point is, that yout try to convert a mostly correctly exposed image into a night image by tweaking, satuation, contrast and color. The point is, that it is still a perfectly exposed image, just a bit darker. I tried this effect on my own and i think it really sells the effect, if let clip a lot of the blacks. Make it underexposed, but controlled. So that the important things in the scenes will still be seen. I also think its the wrong way to blink out the sky completly. Obviously, the sky is the brightest thing at night. I tried to bring down the sky highlights a bit, so it fits the rest of the exposure und put a glow on it. If u want to see my Version, go to my Video "Pages" to minute 5:10 :D Greetz from Germany, Oli!
Great tutorial! One of my next challenges is to create a dark and stormy night scene... you know... with lightning flashes and rain. This tutorial will help me at least get the actual night element looking real, thanks Tobias! Although I have to say getting realistic rain is tricky... my attempts with particles just lack real depth... any chance of a tutorial on that? :) keep up the great work!
Harvi Horvath Hi, it's hard to just 'generate' a realistic looking sky in AE unless you have some stock footage of stormy clouds and just composite the lightning and rain into it. I have a tutorial on particles (not specifically rain, but you can tweak the settings as you need): th-cam.com/video/rrJltaqlNxE/w-d-xo.html and I have one for creating fireworks which shows how you add nice lighting to a cloudy scene :) th-cam.com/video/TpsE7F9kXsM/w-d-xo.html
kleinekatreine If you have an open fire or a torch you are much better off actually shooting at night or at least in dusk/dawn so the light casts a realistic glow onto everything - that glow would be lost if filmed during the day
After Effects supports most common formats - try to import it and see if it works. If not, you can find free video converters online - just do a Google search and you'll find plenty
Hi, your videos are really good and easy to learn from. It would be awesome if you could make a video how to use time remapping or good render settings tutorial. Just an idea :) Keep up the good work!
Nice tutorial! I've been wanting to know how to do this. However, if I wanted my character to be using a flashlight at night, I would I make the flashlight beams? Can you do a tutorial on that please?

If I use a reflector would it ruin the shot?
Depending on how you use it, it can be used to even out the lighting and actually make it easier. As long as the light remains even enough to pass for night you'll be fine :)
Oh sweet! Thanks for the information!
No worries!

Thanks man :) Never used Nuke so I doubt I'd be getting into that anytime soon, but glad to hear you're enjoying my AE tutorials!

never stop making videos man you're great !
sorry, that opening scene didn't look like night, at all.
Jeff Blankenship yeah but sometimes this will be not 100% realistic....
Glad to hear the tutorial will be helpful to your work
Thank you very much :) Great to hear my tutorials prove helpful to you!
No plan to ever stop :)
I figured I'd throw that into the tutorial - it keeps happening to me too so it felt like a tip worth sharing :)
Not sure what you mean with 'advanced transitions'. If you mean video transitions Adobe Premiere has a very large amount of inbuilt transitions :)
Great tutorial! That sky replacement bit will come in handy for sure!
It's on my to-do list, just not sure when I'll get around to it. Also, I suck too badly at painting, I'd need to get someone else involved
extremely helpful, great job on the tutorial.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for all your videos. This one was very helpful. Keep making more videos....
Game Freak No worries at all, thank you for watching!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool effect, I'll try this with keying out the sky and replace it with a starry sky background ;)
Good luck :D There's lots of cool stuff you can do with sky replacements!
Glad you like it!
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial :)

Awesome man! This is just in time, I'll be shooting a scene at night in the near future and didn't want to actually do it at night :D
The sky effect got me thinking you should show how to make a detailed matte painting, like they use in a lot of fantasy / sci-fi films!
I just love your tutorials! This will help me a lot. Thanks! :)
Thanks! You save our short film!
Very smart! This tut is very informative and easy to learn. Thnx a lot, Tobias.
+Michael Bright It's a pretty simple technique and not at all perfect - but in most cases it'll do the trick :)
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial :)
Thank you for your great tutorials I can use them very well!
Awesome!
Funny, i was just googling how to do this yesterday.. how convenient.. Thanks Man!
Don't think they ever used this technique for their music video, but I bet they could have :D
No problem!
Thank you!
Thank You Tobias! I loved the tutorial!! Keep it up bro!!
Man, i love to hear your voice always good thing thanks a lot
Glad you enjoyed it :) Thanks!

Mihai Stan Feel free to add what you want :) Sky replacement can be another task all together - maybe I'll make a tutorial for it some day.
Just what I was looking for. Thanks a lot.
Thanks!
That's what I like to hear!
That's great to hear, thanks!
Very clear and well explained. Thanks
Glad to hear you found it useful!
Thanks man :)
with this, horror music, and a jump scare effect, horror movie, here i come!
Great to hear you found the video helpful!
Sir, you just got a new subscriber! Awesome tutorial :)) Many thanks
Thank you for subscribing :) Much appreciated!
Thank you :)
Thanks Daniel :) I figured a bit of lame humour goes a long way haha!
Good work!!! It's really easy to follow you.
Very clever Tobias.

I see all comments. I edit everything in Adobe Premiere, which allows simple keyframed animations. I did the zoom manually
Very likely - it's a super simple technique but gives you good results :)
This is of great help. Thanks guys!
Ronak Kamat No worries, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you !!! going to use this in my next short film
:) Good luck!

thanks man, i was wondering like how they get the good lighting and its dark.

Great job man as alway.. Keep up the great work..
Nice work! The sky didn't appear so dark, and it kind of spoiled the effect. But.. I fixed it with some masking and curves. Thanks for the tutorial
:) Glad it helped! Thanks!
That's great to hear - cheeers!
Great tutorial
You know... after testing Your DSLR advice combined With this tutorial I actually managed to create somewhat a night(ish) shot :)
Great tutorial!
I was waitung for that :D
Great tut, healped me a lot :)

Can you just get a stock footage element of some fire and place it on your text in After Effects? Not sure what effect you are after.
thankk you !! this was so helpful !!
+Mohamed Kachli No worries, glad you liked it!
Worked for me!
wow thats a great tutorial thank you
No worries!
Thank you for this helpful video! How would you approach a day-for-night scene that includes an open fire and/or burning torches in the image?
kleinekatreine If you have an open fire or a torch you are much better off actually shooting at night or at least in dusk/dawn so the light casts a realistic glow onto everything - that glow would be lost if filmed during the day
Got this one out just in time, didn't I? :D
That concept scene didn't convince me, the sun beating on your white shirt was a dead give away
+koolerpure Fair enough, it wasn't the best day to film it. The Australian sun tends to beat down even on lightly cloudy days
oh my god, you are amazing! this will help me out a lot! thank you!!!!
Ah shucks! Great to hear you're finding the tutorial helpful though! :D
@@SurfacedStudio I'm officially subscribed! can't wait to see more tutorials that can help me out!
Thank you very much! There's tons of tutorials on my channel already for you to check out if you're new here :D
grate job i will be using this thank you
Tommy Harutyunyan Glad it helped, thanks!

Goal accomplished then I would say haha :D
Hey bro, U just got an INSTANT SUBSCRIBER!!!

1 question! How do u convert your video into an After Effects supported video? :p I suck and just got AE today! :)
After Effects supports most common formats - try to import it and see if it works. If not, you can find free video converters online - just do a Google search and you'll find plenty
