All of this was shot around Irvine, CA around June 11 1994 when the band were in town to play the KROQ Weenie Roast at Irvine Meadows. Most shots were done right in the immediate vicinity of the Marriott hotel where they were staying, with a side trip to the Irvine Marketplace across from UCI. I can place almost every location exactly from memory. This video is a precious time capsule of the utterly anonymous, nondescript town where I grew up.
This track is personifies nostalgia. It's ambiguity is perfect. I've been listening to it almost daily for a decade and I'm still not sick of it-- please play this at my funeral.
I started listening to Pavement back in college. There was this girl, during my sophomore year, who I had this major crush on, and I really think she had feelings for me too. I was always too nervous to take it anywhere, and it absolutely tormented me. This song will forever remind me of her.
This has been one of my absolute favorite songs since I was 14. Back when I was truly full of genuine joy and pure love, being the happiest and cutest Indie Kid. I remember spending time with my family at Lake Tahoe during that time, listening to Pavement. Such precious nostalgia.
Pavement is one of those bands that always makes me smile. When you are feeling down or you just can't stand crappy pop songs of today, just listen to Pavement.
Pavement are THE 90s band... I don't think any other rock group better epitomizes the era. They're like what Chuck Berry was to the 50s, Ramones were to the late 70s, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana and Sonic Youth. But I don't think anyone better soaked up the cool, nothing-to-do-so-let's-chill, blank generation vibe than Pavement.
Eh, I actually had to come back and listen to Pavement a few times before I started really appreciating them, and now this is one of my all time favorite songs.
Phil Fox I'm with you on that one. I didn't care for their work for about 5-6 years, then I heard Gold Soundz driving to Detroit in the Polar Vortex. A year later and I like quite a few of their songs.
+coney island lurker When I first heard Pavement, I was hearing Grave Architecture. I was like, " what is this unsubtle, Lou Reed copying drivel?" Then it became more organic to me over time.
Reading the comments, I'm so glad this this stuff is still being listened to today by fans and also by people just discovering them. Over 20 years old and it's still attracting new fans-amazing.
I just got into Pavement this April by coincidence after reading an article on how most 90s bands (Oasis, Weezer) quickly deteriorated in the new millennium and that the bands who live on as legends (Nirvana, Pavement) split up while in the 90s, and they were the only band in the article I hadn't yet heard of. It's been four months, and now they're one on my top 10 bands ever
+Woofman444 Yeah I was too young when they were in their prime (and by too young, I mean I wasn't born until the late 90s) so I've had to catch up to the bands of that time and I just fell in love with this stuff
This reminds me of high school. And while high school sucked so hard for the most part, I cannot be sad listening to this album over and over and over again.
My favorite Pavement song: makes me nostalgic about an era I barely remember: early 90s 💗 these guys captured lightning in a bottle, and shared it with the world.
My favorite song of all time. I am no expert, but it is the perfect pop tune to me. I love this band because they are who listened to when life was simpler
Go back to those gold soundz And keep my advent to your self Because it's nothing I don't like Is it a crisis or a boring change? Love Pavement. This song has the sound of a song that you listen to to remind you of better times, except I listened to this alot in High School and times were not good then. I see a montage of "Boy Meets World" type memories that everyone was supposed to have but I never did when ever I hear this song.
PAVEMENT IS A BAND FROM MY TIME THAT WAS MY FAVORITE. I LOVE ALL THEIR MUSIC, BUT I ALWAYS WANTED TO HEAR "GOLD SOUNDZ" LIVE BEFORE I DIED. I NEVER CRY, BUT WHEN THEY PLAYED "GOLD SOUNDZ" IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL IT MOVED TO TEARS, ESPECIALLY WHEN I GLANCED AT MY DAUGHTER AND SHE WAS BLISSFULLY SING EVERY WORD RIGHT ALONG WITH THE BAND.
I know it's subjective and totally impossible to quantify in any real meaningful or official way....;.....but can we all agree that this was the best song of the 90's??.....like just for now?
As someone who has heard all of those songs (and loves most of them...except for maybe Mogwai), I would still maintain that Gold Soundz is clearly the best of the 90s
Yo this song gets mentioned in the chorus of Momma's "Speeding 72." I was digging the song from the jump, then the Pavement reference sent me straight to Google to make sure I heard the lyrics right. These girls are super talented. Highly recommend a listen for those who miss the gold sounds.
America's finest. I met Pavement at Reading many years ago through Stereo Lab, now we have consider music again'st everything trall llaaa laa days are gone..No contentment with sing along tunes anymore Malkamus...Need more. jn
I've said it before and despite all of the music I've heard between now and then, Gold soundz still for me has simply the best guitar solo of all time. -Music that makes you feel.
may seem laughable to some of you but i’m going into freshmen year right now and this song gives me such a rush of nostalgia and makes me wish i made more memories and did more in general during 7th/8th grade.
same, im going to 11th grade, 8th was such a weird and beatiful experiencie, i can't be more frustrated, i can't even see what's beyond tomorrow and i'm a f 16 year old guy, it might be something with age but idk it's real and i'm feeling it.
it makes me so sad. i wish i could go back to when i discovered pavement, they were my band during the best days of my life. so glad i found them when i did

Listening from University hills Irvine, interesting realizing these places are just down the street from me
A classic song with a great vIdeo and an epic album. PAVEMENT FOREVER!
That's awesome! Thanks

Tears of joy everytime.

Agreed
I think Stephen's voice is my favorite voice on earth.
But sometimes his voice is toooo low for me to sing along. Heaven is a truck is a favorite but lord I can't sing like just out of bed like that
Woow what a bad taste
@@Soul-ui3vf attention seeking taste expert Tony Soul on the scene. You really inspire me... May I be you?

I love american accent for Stephen Malkmus voice.
“Is it a crisis or a boring change” 😂 love it
I used to deliver pizza for years back in the early 90s and it gave me SO much time to listen to Pavement albums over and over.
i used to listen to pavement and built to spill all the time delivering pizza lol

Easily one of the greatest songs ever made. I consider that instrumental midway through to be a musical feat in the history of rock.

I think they're the 90s REM (80's REM).
Will R built to spill is up there too
I saw them live with sonic youth , and was amazed, and then i got slanted and enchanted , it had just come out. And it was over. Lol💖
If the 90's had credits, this band would play over them.
On this side of the Atlantic I would have to go with Radiohead
You can never quarantine the past.
My dad and I bonded deeply during long drives whilst listening to pavement. This song will always have a place in my heart for that reason.
Pavement is love. Pavement is life.
Pavement is a band you listen to, and from that first listen you will know if you like them or not. If it's for you, then you're lucky.

I keep my address to yourself
'Cause we need secrets
We need secrets crets crets crets crets crets
Back right now
Because I never want to make you feel
That you're social
Never ignorant soul
Believe in what you want to do
And do you think that is a major flaw
When they rise up in the falling rain
And if you stay around
With your knuckles ground down
The trial's over, weapon's found
Keep my address to myself because it's secret
'Cause it's secret cret cret cret
Cret cret cret cret cret
Cret cret cret cret cret
Back right now
So drunk in the August sun
And you're the kind of girl I like
Because you're empty and I'm empty

That I won't eat you when I'm gone
And if I go there, I won't stay there
Because I'm sitting here too long
I've been sitting here too long
And I've been wasted
Advocating that
Word for the last word
Last words come up
All you've got to waste

Their best track! Pure nostalgia!
I was introduced to Pavement in 1998. I haven't been able to live without them since.
I spent a whole class period (90 minutes) replaying this song over and over.. I would have kept going, it's just too perfect
