We are like frogs of the well. We only realise the low standard of our education when we go abroad and the reality hits us. Even our PhD research is mostly useless and based on just changing little bit of someone else’s work. There’s nothing novel about it and is done just fir the sake of the degree. Talking from my own experience and what I have seen.

In my opinion, we can't fix Higher education without focusing on the quality of education at primary and secondary level.
Real change can only be brought when we end the cramming culture from our schools and replace it with an education system which encourages reasoning and critical thinking.

@@ammaranaseer3362 Sister you hit the nail on the head. In our education system we test the memory of a child rather than understanding. In the UK there are no exams until year 10 if I am not wrong. Kids get promoted as long as they reach certain level of assessment. We are so obsessed with 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions yet kill the confidence of all those remaining kids who don’t get any positions.Teachers are not loyal to their professions. I grew up in a village and studied in a govt school where school kids used to do house chores for teachers. The girls school was full of useless female teachers who were related to a political figure and would fail exams themselves but they were teaching and ruining lives of generations. The list is long but slowly and surely the things are changing. The list is long.

I was very motivated after my BS and wanted to work on climate change related issues but unfortunately it wasn't possible because I didn't have the expertise and also i had to earn money. Now with a lot of efforts and online learning from many universities I finally submitted a paper in a very reputable international journal. The question is that I now have the energy and I can learn and work on my desired topic. If I go for earning and other stuff it wouldn't be possible for me to manage otherwise. Bottom line is that there is not any place where we can work in our field and earn. I saw advertisements and they need mphil with research experience, and the salary they offer is 20,000pkr. You don't need to go abroad & view it first hand. Just check out their universities & research institutions. They publish research papers in order to bridge the gap between theoretical & applied sciences and commercialize it by continuous improvement. Meanwhile in 3rd world countries, research papers are published for fame without any real objective in mind.

He missed the most important issue with Pakistani education: language. You speak one language at home, another outside, and study in a completely foreign language at school. You don't even understand half of what you study, how can you learn anything from it. You learn when something interests you, how can something be interesting when you can't even understand it.

@ABDUL MOIZ has summed it up very nicely, that's how it was historically done. Muslim Arab and Persian scientists, in the golden age, translated many Greek texts and some Indian ones too. Europeans then translated the works of Muslim scientists and so on.
Good luck with finding a country that has progressed on the back of educating its people in an adapted language; you'll find none. Take India for example, 1.4billion people, 20% of the world population, completely infatuated with the English language. Good work. It accentuates educational challenges. But, no one conducts academic discourse on the structural and rudimentary challenges that Pakistan has been sustaining. These problems are existing and rife with dire and profound reverberations, but it must not discount or overlook the origin of all the problems. This is one of the definitive reasons why Pakistan has been incapacitating to come up with tangible and concrete policies that carry the potential and vigour of altering fate enviably. We have very fundamental problems looming around us from the formative period of Pakistan's existence. Our political system is the fundamental problem. Our political system is an ambivalence of a praetorian democracy. The military is the rudimentary PLAYER behind (almost) every issue. The military has been intransigent on the Kashmir issue. The military does not show resilience to make an effective resolution on the Kashmir issue. The military has been engaging in commercial adventures which only extend profits to military elites. We need a kind of revolution. Talk about these foundational ad structural problems.

To point out weaknesses in any system or an institution is not work of person who is actually running its affairs, but of the one who is outside of it not inside of it. The problem here is that one who is heading an institution or system is pointing out those weakenesses and unable to carry out reforms or implement reforms already recommended.

There are many flaws in Higher Education System of Pakistan.
Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) is a MAFIA and don't want to promote BTech Engineering/Engineering Technology.
National Technology Council (NTC)'s ACT is pending since 2015 and Service Structure hasn't been approved for BTech Engineers till yet.
Actually PEC Engineering and BTech were same and both the Degree students were studying the same books but then this HEC's chairman Mr. Tariq Banouri and PEC MAFIA Engineers changed curriculum of BTech Engineers in 2016/2017 so a new scheme of study was introduced for BTech Engineers and also the title change from BTech Engineers to Engineering Technologists.
This chairman, Mr. Tariq Banouri appointed Mr. Imtiaz Gillani as chairman of National Technology Council (NTC) on his Power Basis.
Engineering Technology is also 4-Years Degree but 3 years theory and 1 year Internship/Project.
Now I studied Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE) 3-Years in 2011 and after that I have studied BTech Engineering 4-Years in 2015 UET Peshawar, so a total of 7 -Years I have spent in studying Engineering but still PEC MAFIA Engineers say that we don't accept you even PEC MAFIA Engineers have studied only 4-Years Engineering (B.Sc/BE Engineering) .
    Shame, Shame, Shame 😞

It is very easy to lament the vested interests and red tape, if you were unable to do anything then you should have resigned. I would say that the higher education sector is in worse shape today than it was in 2017 (when I started my degree).
Once this guy was sacked, the entire vested lobbies went up in arms though.

But many things becomes changed for example if you see Bs accounting and finance as a new field also Bs Data science is a new field. So many fields become changed with the time.. If we talk about history etc then i think in todays time very less amount of people prefer to go for such degrees like History botany political science etc.. But nowadays people prefer those degrees which give you benefit in future.. Even though people stop going for BBA..

10 years ago I would agree with Mr. Tariq Banuri but afar working 10 years abroad I found his thinking obsolete . He is mixing Higher Education with the Higher secondary (senior high school) education ...
    1. There is no such thing like Higher Education System , there are some set of policies and standard given by the Govt... but the universities are quite independent under that ... and there are very strong reasons for that. if a university is not up to the Govt. standard, it should not be allowed
    2. teacher skills ... this is still true at some level . However, I meet very few good teachers from good universities ... but all of the professors from good universities were excellent researcher.
I want to say more but if Chairman HEC have this to say, I think my words ........ . So good luck.

HEC is herself hurdle in the higher education. HEC has their own journals category (contrary to world) which can not produce quality research and compete with world. very strange policies of local journal development which is only producing numbers of article(extremely low quality).

There is one magical solution to correct Pakistan’s education system.
    Step-1
HEC shall let everything else to schools, colleges, universities to decide and introduce a central curriculum plus exam for the whole country at elementary (5th), middle school (8th), secondary school (12th), a professional GRE type test for college and university admissions, and at the end a USMLE type professional exam to evaluate if the candidate is fit for the professional training.
    Step 2.
All curriculum and exam conducted by HEC must be updated every 5 years to match the updated technology and modernisation of subjects
Step 3. HEC shall focus on hiring a pool of learned, skilled and experienced professionals to prepare and update curriculum and exams required by HEC
All the schools, colleges, and universities will automatically update their curriculum, hiring and trainings of the teachers/tutors, exams everything according to HEC.
HEC has to do only ONE things to prove it’s integrity and credibility not only locally but globally.
I bet within next 10-15 years Pakistan will have the world recognised schools, colleges, universities/institutes and graduates of these institute will be accepted all across the globe with divinity.
This is the road map to credible education system

Students are facing lot of problem to get their degree but unfortunately this system is not facilitating their students.
Students future is in dark situation where they have no specification about their degree and for that is the purpose students are not getting job because they have no skills regarding their degree and no one wants to give experience.
