    The reason it's at the back of the plane is simple. When is the last time you heard of a plane backing into a mountain?

    • @martintheiss743
      @martintheiss743 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Alaska Air once had a mountain crash and the scary part is that it is officially listed as a "controlled" crash since the NTSB said the crew was in charge and operation of the flight deck until the moment of the crash.

I too like the way he only comments when a factual report is released, and then with a focus on interpreting the contents for people not in aviation.

    For those of you who may be interested, Locomotives also have a Black Box in the "Nose" of the unit. Again, bright orange. It also collects any information about the train and the circumstances it is running in, as well as functionality to be downloaded on the fly remotely. It will also give audio from the exterior of the locomotive, which will give investigators noise cues. Finally it records the "Dashcam" facing outward, and inward if so equipped.
    Why in the nose? It is quite a strong section, similar to the tail portion of a plane, and also happens to be where most of the electrical control components are such as GE's Trip Op, The general engine management, and so on. It's almost like one big server box. In some Yard Locomotives, if so equipped, there will also be a Beltpack control box, where one can remote control the locomotive with a waist mounted box from a distance of 2 miles or so depending on geography.

    I’ve always wondered why the data from the FDR and CVR isn’t instantly uploaded to something like a cloud server so that the data can be accessed immediately, without the need to go looking for a physical box which is not always able to be retrieved. You’d be able to review data in real time as well to problem solve issues in flight as the happened, from the ground

      It's an idea that has merit and has been getting some serious discussion recently. The main problem is the amount of data accumulation and storage you would need. At any given moment there are thousands of commercial airplanes in the air. Each one will require a continuous individual uplink to a satellite and then all that data has to go somewhere for storage. That's all going to require a very big investment to put it all in place.

      The horrific part of air crash investigations is that they are typically done by professional aircraft experts and normally create much information about how systems operate. The unfortunate thing though is that a JAL lead mechanic was so horrified at the fact an unattended whistle for 7 years turned into a massive crash he just slit his belly in the traditional way a servant would amend for a mistake with his master.

    there have been a lot of cases where investigators could not find the cause of an accident because electric power on the aircraft was lost (as far as i know, the backup power sources like the RAT or aircraft backup batteries do not feed the CVR/FDR, only the APU does)
    why dont the black boxes have backup batteries (inside the unit itself) that can allow it to continue recording for even just 5 or 10 minutes when primary power on the aircraft is lost

    During Tragic aircraft crash;
    Most. Aircraft to ground impact the tail section aft 48/49 partially tact while fuselage almost burned by fire or mangled.
    1. By its color easy to be seen and retrieved by NTSB, preventing to be covered by other debris when it detached from airframe structure ,like luggages, cargo , parts, and pax dead bodies
    2. Before a Crash , Pilots saves their lives first by pulling-up the yoke or pitch -up.
    - Nose dive crash ,cockpit crushed while. tail section is still in tact,
    - Glide approach crash , tail section will just detached from aft bulkhead strap ,hard metal casing will save the recorder.

    To all saying to stream data to the cloud or to Satellites: the limiting factor is Bandwidth, Rf Power, and most of all, security. Having the unit contained on a single craft prevents the data from being hacked easily, and it maintains the necessary bandwidth to pass all of the data variables to be recorded. To transmit to a satellite, requires either a lot of power spattered across the whole sky, or a directional antenna, same occurs for downlink to ground, for the necessary frequencies and bandwidth.

  • @mrspooky497
    @mrspooky497 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hey Joe, any idea why this data isn't being live streamed to a ground station while the flight is going on?? Surely when you have 100-200 MBPS of bandwidth available for in-flight wifi for passengers, you can use it to stream all the flight info live.

When he came to a piece of electrical equipment whose function was either beyond the scope of the lesson, or classified above our clearance, it would simply be marked as BLACK BOX. I had always believed that this was also used in aviation. As in, all the wires go into the black box where magical things are done to preserve the necessary flight parameters.

    If I recall the data was recorded on spools of steel wire. Not actual tape. This was to help preserve it in the case of a fire or extreme heat. It is also much easier to colecta spool of wire vs tape. Wire also does not wear our like tape either.

    Pretty sure the first flight data recorders in use schedule in airline service was the UK & Australian developed Darvall Red Egg --- so called because of its Day-Glo red colour and shape which resembled a large version of metal cased oil filter on a 1960/70s car engine.. The development of the Red Egg was spurred on by the Comet 1 disasters the true cause of which was unknown for a considerable time after the crashes. To survive extreme heat the Red Egg used wire instead of tape as a recording medium. At the time the UK was ahead of the USA in this field as the American requirements which only specified a cockpit voice recorder.

    Captain Joe, I would have thought that when you were discussing why the Black Boxes were located in the rear of the plane you would have mentioned the FAA Regulation that requires the ELT to located in the rear of the plane. FAA Regulation 91.207 Emergency locator transmitters, subparagraph (b) states: "Each emergency locator transmitter required by paragraph (a) of this section must be attached to the airplane in such a manner that the probability of damage to the transmitter in the event of crash impact is minimized. Fixed and deployable automatic type transmitters must be attached to the airplane as far aft as practicable.", for the same reasons you mentioned regarding the structural strength of the tail section of the aircraft. It only stands to reason that since the tail section is the strongest portion of the aircraft and the FAA requires ELT's to mounted there, that the installation of the Black Boxes would be in the same area for the same reasons.

    The CVR does record for 2 hours as stated in the video, but a new FAA and EASA requirement (about 10 years ago) calls for the CVR to record for 10 additional minutes after power is lost. It does this by having its own battery that records an additional 10 minutes after power is lost.

      They could have two different boxes that records the same data, more useful. Also in addiction they could upload the data if there is an internet connection available, an airplane has WiFi for their passengers, why not reserve a small portion of bandwidth to transmit that data, it's not all that much I think, we are talking of audio that could be easily compressed and a bunch of data, probably it's insignificant.

    Most the electronic equipments of the aircraft BACK IN THE DAYS are actually components inside of an enclosed case with black finish to it. These equipments are called Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) which is a hardware to which every each one of them has its specific function. Some of the LRUs are Transponder, FDR, CVR, TCAS and FMC. All LRUs are pretty much Black Box eventhough nowadays we have a good variety of colours given. FDR and CVR are coloured orange for the ease of divers to locate the box glowiness when flashed with Blacklights. In Aviation, we are not supposed to call them Black Box because they can be anything. Hope this clears some confusion.

  • @rcairflr
    @rcairflr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @3:13 > You are absolutley incorrect on saying todays FDR can record up to 1000 parameters. FDR data is divided up in Words and Subframes. A modern FDR will have up to 1024 Words Each Word has 4 subframes, each subframe has 12-16 bits (depending on the FDR). So theoretically each Word could record up to 64 parameters. Also, there is FAA and EASA requirements for how many samples per second a parameter MUST be recorded. So one parameter could use up to 8 Words of data. So a modern FDR can record way more than a 1000 parameters dependent on what is being recorded.
    There are 88 required parameters per FAA and EASA. Saying there are 88 required parameters is kind of a misnomer since, a required parameter such as Airspeed will have to be recorded from each Air Data Computer, so just this one required parameter of the required 88 would actually be up to 4 parameters. Same for most of the 88 required parameters.

    I went to university for electrical engineering.
    One of the sample tests we would be asked to solve is that you are given a BLACK BOX, with unidentified electronic components inside, and you have to preform certain tests to determine which electrical components are in the box, and what configuration they were in.
    So the term "Black Box" simply meant "hidden" where you couldn't see exactly what was inside.
    I assume this evolved into the general term where "Black Box" simply means any metal box filled with electronic components.

  • @quenchize
    @quenchize 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I thought it was called black box from the engineering term for a unit that is specified by its inputs and outputs without regard to how this is achieved.

    • @andrewwmacfadyen6958
      @andrewwmacfadyen6958 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sort of a black box was originally used for the mysterious boxes of any Radar or secret navigation or other electronic warfare device installed on RAF and Commonwealth aircraft in WW2.
      RAF slang was that Black Boxes were installed by "Boffins" and any fault in them or the aircraft was due to "Gremlins" .

  • @dafoex
    @dafoex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another posibility for the black boxes's name might come from engineering:
    A black box test is one where you are not allowed to see what's happening inside what you're testing, be it the parts of a machine or software code, only the output of the thing. Similarly, pilots don't need to see inside a black box to know the specifics of how it works, they only need to know that it is there and that it works.

    One CFI told me to think of a black box as a device that runs "out of sight, out of mind"; it's just sits there, quietly recording data. Only interaction is preflight test and pulling the circuit breaker after an incident so that the recording won't get erased on the next loop.
