Know the Artist: Giuseppe Arcimboldo

  • In the age of regal Renaissance portraiture, artists were tasked with formally-and of course favorably-capturing their patron’s likenesses. But Giuseppe Arcimboldo (Italian, 1526-1593) took formality off the menu with his whimsical paintings that were good enough to eat.
    This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
    Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
    We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

    I love your art series. It is so enlighting and informative and very beautiful. I saw several of Arcimboldo's paintings at the Lourve and was blown away by their complexity and beauty. Lastly, I love that painting of the cat over your shoulder. I felt like its stare would hypnotize me.

    I LOVE this series! Thanks for your great work. 💜 Would you consider doing an episode on the great (and under-recognized) Polish artist and sculptor Stanislav Szukalski (1893-1987)? The Netflix documentary on his life and work was really inspiring.

    Excellent video! I just saw my first Vincent van Gogh piece, The Night Café, at the Yale Art Gallery and I was in absolute awe. His impasto technique really caught my eye and the painting looked 3D! Would love to see an episode on Van Gogh and post inpressionism. Thank you for your hard work and I look forward to your future videos.

    Sometimes I see paintings like this that aren't. Dutch Golden Age still lives in particular. Pareidolia makes me see faces in a Rachel Ruysch flower painting, just for a fleeting second, almost every time.

    • @TheArtTourist
      @TheArtTourist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! I wonder if that would have been somewhat intentional on Ruysch's part, she hid so much detail in her paintings.

    • @VelvetMetrolink
      @VelvetMetrolink ปีที่แล้ว

      @Several Circles | Art History I honestly think it's just the brain. The effect is so fleeting it would be near impossible to do on purpose. However, I'm a firm believer in the death of the artist, so for me, they are there whether she put them there or not. I guess ultimately, unless someone x-rays one and sees a pair of eyes staring out underneath the paint, we'll never know.

    This was a good episode. I didn't know much of anything about Arcimboldo.
    My one suggestion is the sponsorship. I completely understand that you need to make money, but as a weird little socialist, art as investment freaks me out a little bit. I would pay for an ad-free version.

    Which one came first, Arcimboldo or the Indian tradition of composite animal miniature? (The latter spans centuries, I can’t find a reliable estimate).

    • @TheArtTourist
      @TheArtTourist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! It seems as though composite animal paintings became popular during the Mughal period, but that it's a much older tradition dating back centuries before Arcimboldo. Will have to look into it further!
