  • He immortalized quiet moments of 17th century life with sublime clarity - how he managed to do so is a secret that Johannes Vermeer (b. Delft, Netherlands 1632-1675) took to his grave.
This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

I don't know if you've received a request for Carel Fabritius before, but an episode about him would be great. The master of light, indeed. He had such crazy skill. It's so hard to give the impression of illumination in artwork. You have to plan for it from the very beginning, but finish it last. It takes a great vision to pull it off so expertly.

fascinating. I remember Cocteau speculating that Vermeer used mirrors I think way back in the 1930s while at the same time, or course, revering his talent. I think sometimes some people would like to think that creating compositions and all they contain, and then executing them with brilliance and deep understandings of colors and light it easy if you use a mirror. I remembering seeing Vermeers in person when I lived in Amsterdam. amazing. Thank you for another great class!

Know the artist, Johannes Vermeer's name,
In the halls of art, his legacy aflame.
A master of light, in the Dutch Golden Age,
His paintings enrapture, on history's stage.
Born in Delft, in sixteen thirty-two,
Vermeer's brush brought scenes to life anew.
With meticulous detail, he crafted each scene,
In colors vibrant, like dreams in between.
His subjects, ordinary, yet imbued with grace,
Captured in moments, frozen in space.
From 'The Milkmaid' pouring, to 'The Girl with a Pearl Earring' serene,
Vermeer's paintings enchant, like a vivid dream.
In shadows and light, his genius does shine,
In the glint of an eye, or a glass of wine.
Each stroke of his brush, a testament rare,
To the beauty of life, in its simplest affair.
So let us know the artist, Johannes Vermeer's name,
And marvel at the legacy, he left in his frame.
For in his paintings, we find a timeless delight,
A glimpse into beauty, forever bright.

I think "The Glass of Wine" may now be my favorite Vermeer. It's funny, technical, and the open window is stunning. But, yeah, it's mostly the glass fully in the woman's face, and that the glass is green. Nice video.
Ah, the kitty, when he or she comes into focus with the depth of field.

That’s a super useful request! Since ‘Know the Artist’ is our bread and butter, it’d be great to contextualize where each artist sits on the art history timeline and in relation to one another. Rather than a long video, we’re thinking we’ll create a series of art movement playlists organized chronologically, and each playlist will have a little introductory explanation with dates, key artists, etc.
