- On August 11, the Hawaii Mars departed Sproat Lake for the very last time, as it embarked on its final journey to its new home, the BC Aviation Museum. The Martin Mars water bombers are undoubtably the most iconic aircraft in British Columbia, as many people remember when they were fighting fires in their own communities.
It only seemed fitting to give this legendary aircraft a proper send-off, so plans were organised to have the Hawaii Mars form a formation flight with the Snowbirds and fly over Pat Bay and downtown Victoria before pilots Peter Killian and Rick Matthews landed the Hawaii Mars for the last time.
The resulting flypast was nothing short of spectacular. It's probably the best flyby I am ever going to witness!
Huge thanks to the BCAM and Coulson crews for organising this!
Thanks to my buddy for providing the thumbnail photo, check out his Instagram at @grants_aviation for some amazing photography!

Beautiful footage! I really appreciate the natural sounds just being able to experience and take in angles I couldn't while watching from shore. Not easy shooting into the sun! Once again, thanks for posting - well done!!
Thanks, much appreciated! Yeah, it was a struggle shooting into the sun for me too.
Fantastic footage, so nice to see the Hawaii Mars get a proper sendoff. Love that shot of the Mars taxiing towards you with the Snowbirds passing overhead. Such a beauty.
Thanks Jesse. I think anything less thank this final sendoff would have been disappointing, it was incredible to see in person!
A not so happy day but was beatiful farewell to the flying boat. And the last flyby of snowbirds was great!
Having the Snowbirds demonstration team from the Royal Canadian Air Force escorting her to her final landing was a wonderful touch and, to me, an emotional one. Great videography.
Yes, it was quite the sight to see the Snowbirds along side. Thank you very much.
Stunning footage, very sad seeing it's last flight, however I'm really glad people got to video it 👍😎👍😎
Thank you! Yes, it was sad to know this was its final flight, but also amazing to see how many people were out to witness it.

Absolutely amazing! ✈️
Thanks!
Incredible video of this once in a lifetime moment.
Thank you!
This is one of the best videos I've seen of this day from Pat Bay. I was there and this video still keeps me riveted. How you get such great results with a handycam escapes me, maybe I need to trade my Panasonic for a Sony!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I stabilise my videos in my video editing software, but they mostly look that stable straight off the camera. My AX-53 is really good at shooting handheld stable video.
This flyover would have been mindblowing to witness without warning/ prior knowledge
I'm sure it caught many by surprise!
Beautiful job capturing the last operational moments of the mighty Mars, us Islanders will miss her bellowing through the skies.
Thank you! I'll miss her too.
Stunning footage! One of those bucket list items I didn't get to see.
Thanks!
Her engines fall silent for the last time. Time to let an old lady rest, and tell her stories to the next generation. Farewell, but not goodbye!
Very nice, thank you for sharing.
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
They should convert them into forest fire planes
