I didn't retire, either. I worried about missing my work when I stopped - so much of my identity was tied up with it - I worked hard to achieve the necessary education to do it, etc. But, like you, when I left, I really never looked back. I was so fortunate to be able to stop working early and I began to do things I was interested in - like quilting!
Retired from nursing and 6 mo later went back for a few months then retired permanently from nursing. Worked teaching quilt classes for a couple years and now not working at all. Loving that I can work on my own projects now. Love quilting
Yes, I learned to quilt in a class (1980) using cardboard templates cutting around each with right handed scissors although I'm left handed! That was a great invention for me...I dropped all my other hobbies and still love quilting! Thanks for all the work you do to keep us all connected each day.
Missed live today - must comment that Pat writes the best patterns! They are concise & easy to follow for new quilters but interesting enough to keep seasoned quilters interested. ❤
Plaids challenge me. As a young girl I'd sit behind a lady at church who made her own clothes. I was impressed with how her plaids that she often used would match every where. They matched at the back, at the shoulders, on the sleeves. So now I feel I have to match the plaids on all my quilt blocks. I love to use plaid when it will really show the matches.
I 100% agree with you about the helpfulness of the internet! Oh my goodness I’ve learned so much. I also started quilting way back and was definitely not a fan of the cardboard template. I tended to make rail fence and log cabin quilts. I especially liked the variety of layouts for the log cabin block. At that time and until recently, I hand quilted all my quilts. Then I retired discovered FMQ, upgraded to a sit down long arm and I haven’t looked back! I have looked to the internet and TH-cam in particular to learn all kinds of techniques. I love it!!
I used to be IT, started as software QC, 22 years later I was a Network Admin. Very stressful career. When I had the opportunity to change careers, I went to work at Joann's for 8 years, collecting fabric. 😂 I retired early at 60 and have been sewing ever since. Can't really sell quilts at their true value (time+materials) so I give away a lot of quilts. I also make many of my own clothes. My favorite thing is lining jeans with flannel. Always wanted to make a few YT videos but... I was told it takes approx 8 hours to make a 20 minute video. Plus, I'd need a camera, software, a good computer... so I never pursued it. I sew almost everyday, prob 4-6 hours a day. It IS work to me, but I think it's more about having a schedule to keep me sane! 🤣
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, laughter and friendship with all of us inthe quilting, crafting community. you are a blessing, Merry CHRISTmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
Boxing Day here in the UK. Another quiet day for me but lots of big shops usually have a *Boxing Day Sale* for people looking for a bargain. Thanks for all your great video's over the past year - I always look forward to watching them 👀😁
Hi - I enjoyed your cross stitch pillow video last week. I know you don’t like to make the pillow forms, but if you find yourself making another one - I learned this tip awhile back from another cross stitcher -- place yarn in the corners before you stuff with poly-fil. It helps to keep the corners “full” looking. I use maybe 12” in each corner. I put the yarn in 1 corner and then stuff the poly in to hold in place. Then yarn in 2nd corner and stuff . It does help
Boxing Day here in Canada is like your Black Friday. A big shopping day for deal lovers. I used to work in retail many years ago and have had my fill of shopping for Boxing Day sales. Instead, when my kids were young and we had moved away to a different province than our families, we couldn't make it home for Christmas one year so we declared it Pyjama Day. This was about 26 years ago but it stuck! Hubby and I were in our PJ's all day yesterday. It was so relaxing after the Christmas rush.
Thanks for all the time you put into making fun videos for your quilting community. I enjoy your chats and appreciate the inspiration you give me. I'm looking forward to picking out a project in Wendy's Autumn Quilting book, and also from the 100 Blocks book. I need to get busy with some projects that I want to get finished first. **yikes** 🙂
Thanks Pat for your Q & A. I agree that the internet has had a huge impact in our lives. I love watching and learning from so many great teachers like yourself. And yes we go through different interests within quilting. I started with piecing and rework before experimenting with applique. I do the patterns that will teach me something new. Thank you for all you do. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 😊
Have two quilts to finish before the end of the year. One just needs binding. Other is a QAYG that has really stretched me. About 1/2 done with rows. I am 18 months from retirement. Solution Architect/PM for Enterprise level accounting software which is usually complex. I won’t miss the challenges
Actually isn’t not a screw driver, it’s an Allen wrench. But whatever, huh? It’s so cute! Love it! Love the cross stitch kit! Will have to check that out. Hope they have it available is 18 or 28 count. I’m not a fan of the 14 count look. Thanks for everything you do and all of the videos you have available for us. We all look forward to them and miss you when you don’t do them. It’s ok. I usually find another one of yours to watch again!

@ I’ve watched your TH-cam videos for a long time and I don’t recall you ever mentioning it. I wondered if you just didn’t care for it and why? I have always shied away from it, but decided to take the plunge. It’s not real intuitive when you start but I think I’m getting the “hang of it”.
I totally agree that the Internet is the most disruptive change in quilting, but I would add rotary cutting and long arm quilting as two other disrupting and expansive changes.
Rotary cutter was in place when I started to quilt so it was the norm over 35 years ago. Longarming was also being done then as I had quilts longarmed right away.
The Internet is a biggie, if not for the gobs of info, but also that wonderful community. Indeed, it made quilting a whole new world, especially for those of us who live away from the throng. On the hardware side, however, rotary cutters and acrylic templates made the biggest difference to me when I came back to quilting. I learned with cereal box templates and scissors I wished were left-handed but were not, and kept the habit until I graduated college and went to work, so these newfangled assists upon my return were amazeballs. THEN they came out with left-handed rotary cutters (I adore my Martelli) and left-handed rulers (thank you, Creative Grids!), and now that's all the difference. I always feel I'm all set, and then they one-up it again. Good stuff always on the horizon in our little quilting world!
I didn't retire, either. Pat,that tool for the pedestal is called an Allen wrench. FYI🤗
I retired from IT. Got my start programming! The career blessed me to raise my twins on my own. Been quilting for 10 years and MUCH prefer quilting 😊❤
I retired from IT also-37 years-IBM & Lincoln Financial. I ❤quilting so much!
@ I did IT for nearly 40 years as well. Congratulations on retirement.

That's so sweet! I can picture you staring at her seams while church stuff is happening. Everyone probably thought you were very attentive.
Good for you Leona!
Pat, Thank you for answering my question about your quilt patterns. I will say your directions are precise and easy to follow …. So again Thank you!

So glad you’re on today. I look forward to your programs. Thanks to you.
Your patterns are excellent-clear, concise and so easy to follow. Thank you for all the work you put in to make them so user friendly.
I agree. The page she does with the block drawn out and labeled is so easy to follow. Often it's all I need to make her blocks.
Love the Q&A re: quilting….thanks for all you do to promote this quilting community!
We are all glad you left your other career. I have enjoyed following you for some years now and your patterns are so fun and creative.

I to love plaids.
Have a happy weekend!! See you next week!!
I collect cross stitch, too
Fabulous & thanks for sharing
Isn't that cross stitch set cute? I got the Dec sew sampler too.
Are there any adaptions or changes you made while recovering from your broken wrists, that you still use today?
None I can think of.
Happy new year
Enjoy your time away from the work part.
Pat, have done FPP? If so what did you like or not like?
I have done a ton of it. Like any quilting technique, it is very good at what it is very good at. Why?
@ I’ve watched your TH-cam videos for a long time and I don’t recall you ever mentioning it. I wondered if you just didn’t care for it and why?
I have always shied away from it, but decided to take the plunge. It’s not real intuitive when you start but I think I’m getting the “hang of it”.
Allen wrench!
Is the Gingerbread House cross stitched on the bag? I know you can do that. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. Happy New Year!
it is printed. You can XS over the print if you want
@@PatSloanthank you for the info.

GM! What ladder do you use for your quilts?
FYI it's an Allen wrench ❤

It’s an Allen Wrench. Lol
Star of Wonder ..... and I wonder....I have 500 yds of fabric - I am bad at matching colors and prints....what do I do???? I can't afford EQ

both those tools were already in place 35 years ago when I learned to quilt.
Happy new year
