    I no longer use an MPC. I bought the MV-8800 almost a year ago from a pawn shop for $400, just because. It sat in my studio and I kept telling myself everyday that I'm going to touch it. My friend linked me this video, and I unhooked my mpc2500, bought all the manuals for the MV-8800 off of ebay, and I will never touch an mpc again. Oh did I mention that I have a 60 II, 2000xl, and a 3000. I might just midi the 2500 with the MV, and thats because of the midi outputs. Thanks Mike!!!

      Jomo Kinsey if you have a 3k...you should find a way to get that in the chain somewhere. Great A/D converter on that joint.

      Groundhog X....you were right. I bought the vailixi 3.5 and fixed my screen for the MPC 3000, a much needed weaponry. It is now in the chain and they all have their contributions depending on the quality of sound you’re going for.

      Views by drone I like to touch things, something about reading from an iPad seems weird. Don’t get me wrong I read from a screen a lot, but I like to highlight things that I’m trying to commit to memory and make book marks. I don’t want to turn something on just to get to a certain part of the book. I just want to open and boom.

    The MV has so many weapons hidden in plain sight. For example the MV has the authoritative low end of any sampler period. That's because unbeknownst to most users the MV is the only drum sampler with a genuine subharmonic synth. It's not an EQ. It literally makes sub-bass from the material sent through it just like the DBX units it's patterned after. In fact it was a staple of all of the old school big stack sound systems from guys like Gary Stewart and Richard Long. That thing will turn a tap on the shoulder to a dropkick to your chest.
    * I'm never selling mine.

    • @a.stockton4817

    I bought the MV-8800 because of Mike Acosta. Onto another thought, could we petition Roland to do an MV-9000 and hire Mike to consult on the features and design like the MV-8800 upgraded of course?

    Thx Guys for showing the rest of the world what they SERIOUSLY SLEPT ON. As you mentioned, there are many of us old MV-NATION members that still use them to this day. An YES, having your vids changed our creative lives forever. They inspired so many new sessions. I still have my MV8000, with the OP1 (unicorn). And will get an 8800 in the future. Keep up the great work, and thx for all the previous guidance. Peace...Netm8kr

    I love this machine. Because of the mv i bought the sp555 and the mute solo mode alone helped me figure out tracking out all of my tracks from mv songs to 4, 8 bar phrases dumping them into the SP555 and launching 3, 4,5 buttons at once per song on the 555 so I could assign effects per track live. I need to make a video soon because I feel a lot of home producers don't realize the capability and accessibility to invent new ways to use these live. Thank you Jim and Mike straight up heroes

    Thank you for showing this, and explaining it in a way that's different than you hear from all Hiphop producers. When Mike came to my Guitar Center I worked at in the early 00's (2003/04 I think it was) I had hated this machine. I came from the classic TR step sequence type drum machines, and the MPC's we were selling as the "hiphop beat box" and these were EXPENSIVE for the time ($2,000 if my memory serves me right). I remember our MV-8k sitting in the corner right next to the V-Synth and other Roland products and it rarely even got turned on. Most people looked at it and hated the pad feeling compared to the MPC4k and later MPC500/1k (which I think really didn't help the MV sales). Also, like you mentioned, it was a nightmare to program. Back then we had to get certified on our gear, (A/B/C certs for GC) and I was an A-Cert holder that could barely figure out how to even lay the most basic track. Mike came in and showed it being an awesome machine, but a hiphop machine. Which, in the Villa Park, IL store there was SOME hiphop, but nowhere near what the latin market or even synth market was. I mean we were pushing Andromeda A6's, MS2k's, V-Synths, etc. out of there. Also at the time you had A LOT of hiphop and R&B producers in the area using Korg Tritons to produce, so it was definitely harder to go "no, those machines are good, but look at this new weird thing that's trying something totally different, to do what you're already doing." Also, the fact that EVERYONE in the hiphop industry at the time were using MPC's & Tritons and NO ONE (at the time) was backing the MV (obviously, later RZA came out and championed the machine, but at this point, no one was backing it). Even I, back then, was in the market for a sampler, looked at this and passed it up to buy an Akai S-5000 we had used in the store because I've never been a hiphop producer, never will be, and it just wasn't my thing. Fast forward to 2015. I was looking for a hardware sequencer. MPC's were still kicking and had 4 MIDI-outs to control my vintage synth collection, but I just happen to catch a MV-8000 w/ OP-1 online for $300. Did some fast research on the changes. Found some industrial artists (what I produce) talking about it's power and how it works with up to 32 external synths at once. I said "fuck it" and bought it. It took me forever still to really get into the nitty gritty. This box, to this day, is the most powerful hardware sequencer I've worked with. We have Octatraks, digitraks, all kinds of new stuff, and nothing even compares even CLOSELY to how powerful this machine is. I use it in the studio, live, etc. I've since dropped a 512mb RAM & 120gb SSD hard drive into it which basically means I never have to hook it to a computer other than to record audio (still using a DAW as I don't like the mastering tools in the MV directly). This, combined with my Akai S5000 is almost a complete live rig for a 30-60 layer industrial project since the S5000 can run sample directly off the HDD (something I felt the MV really missed the mark with) instead of having to load to RAM first and you can drop a SSD in it too or, in my case, SCSI2SD and give it a 512gb mini-SD card. Anyways, back to the MV. I only use it as a sampler live. Otherwise in the studio it's a MIDI sequencer of monumental power. 1 MIDI keyboard to control the whole room directly into the MV, and you can map each instrument as a MIDI track. Throw in that amazing quantization, humanization, etc. and you can make old drum machines sound alive. Got a Kawai R-50e that can now have powerful quantization and humanization, something it could never have before. I realize the hiphop market was the place to originally sell these, but Roland REALLY missed the opportunity with other genres being pushed aside or even ignored, that could have eventually added extra sales and maybe we'd have a MV-10k these days. I'd give anything to have a more modern MV-8k, but until they make a machine that can sample like it does (easily), sequence 2 or more chains of MIDI (16 channel per chain), have basically a VST bassline synth in it, have the effects suite this has, and isn't a computer program, I'll stick with my MV-8000 as my go-to machine for almost everything MIDI.

    Good to see you around Mike. I miss MVNation. That forum was one of the reasons I bought my MV-8000 in the first place. I'm an original owner of an MV and very lucky to have ordered the MV8-OP1 immediately upon walking off the showroom floor with my MV. It's such an underrated machine and not one that I'll ever get rid of. Count me in the camp of people that would love to see an updated MV from Roland.

    Man the power and how far ahead of its time is priceless. Got mine in 2012. I still go back and watch all you guys old videos that made me buy it. Also Waxdat88 is guru for 88/8 users, gotta peep his videos they're incredible. Since I'm not a big software/midi guy I track out my stems to the mix down folder then drag and drop to logic and they lock up perfectly as long as the bpm is set the same. And song mode is big feature being able to have 16 songs in one project, that was another game changer for me. I could honestly On for days about the mv. It will go to the grave with me

    Great gear chat. Got my first mv8800 3 years ago and actually shut my laptop and use it as my centerpiece. Picked up a 2nd MV8800 about a month and a half ago brand new in the box. Dropped fat pads, ssd, and a bunch of patches from S700 series, plus my own collections of samples from over a decade of collecting. Two midi outs going into active thru boxes and I'm sequencing 10 synths with it all live. MV Nation is back up by the way. Also Roland Clan forum still has activity and also mvrevisited, plus the facebook group very active too. Nice demo you did here and I learned something new off just this one. Great that you got an MV8800 again Mike!

      Hey, i'm thinking of buying one but got some concerns about the machine would be good for making soundtrackish/ambient music, i'm reading you got plenty of synths hooked up, this is what i want to do, i'm wondering how is this working out for you? Is the sequencing good for external gear ? thanks.

    • @vondragonnoggin
      @vondragonnoggin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lennart Steyn Works great. The MV's have two midi outs, one midi in, so my master keyboard goes midi out to the mv in, and midi outs on the mv go to kenton 1 in, 5 out active powered midi thru boxes and on to my external gear. If the gear has midi thru also, it can be expanded more or even plug another 5 out thru into one of the outs for more gear. One of the outs routs back to master keyboard and drives its 4 part VA synth. Multitimbral synths also get you more tracks for the midi out from the mv. I have a mix of analog, VA, rompler, and even another grain sampler all being driven by the two midi outs of the mv and the kenton thru boxes. Another guy on youtube has a copperlan pc software setup controlling midi over ethernet to converters on external gear. Lots of mv videos out on youtube also. Sequencer is one of the best I've ever used of both hardware and software.

    • @MikeAcostaOfficial
      @MikeAcostaOfficial 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats a tough call, its really subjective and both machines will have their pro's and cons. You'll need to consider what your workflow is and ultimately what your looking to get out of the machine. The MV is clearly over 10 years old, so the new MPC will have the nice color touch screen and modern tech specs such as faster USB, SSD drive support, stand-alone and computer integrated software. The MV however will still have its own unique features, sound and workflow which to many is unmatched but slower USB 1 connection etc etc. Best of both worlds is to have both but you'll really need to do your homework and test out an MPC and then see if ou can find someone who has an MV that knows it very well and then make decision for yourself.

    I just got my hands on an MV, this is the 2nd time I've had one.... Honestly at this point in my life I don't ever want to learn or be bothered with any other drum machine, sampler or groovebox.... The MV is still capable so there's no point in learning anything else, there's still enough stuff in the MV to hold my creativity for many more years to come

    I have own all three MPC's the 2000, 2000XL, and the 5000 but when I bought the MV-8800 I never looked back. Many people didn't like the MV because the didn't understand the the quantize.
    I almost took the MV-8800 back to Guitar Center because I thought timing on this thing was horrible until I final figured out how to use the quantize after owning for year.
    You could also reccord 8 tracks of audio on the MV-8800. Then Akai came out with the MPC 5000 that also allowed you to record 8 tracks of audio but it is still no where as good as the 8 track recorder on the MV-8800. With the MPC5000 you have to sequence your pattern and then you have to dub it down to a two track stereo sample and then you have to export it to the 8 track recorder mode.
    With MV it works like a linear recording DAW system. Sequence and 8 track audio recording done within the same screen, this so much better than exporting to different from sequencer screen into the audio mode like on the MPC 5000.

    Just got one of these, really enjoying the insights and history lesson of why the "old skool but hi-spec all in one analog DAW" mystique of this big gray elephant machine drew me in over selling off so many "compartmental competitors" to it. Don't yet know if it'll be the one but on paper and in theory it will be. I'll know in 2 months when I get back home to try it

    Thanks Jim and Mike What a great Trip down memory lane in this video,interesting to know how crippled it was in its original Prototypes,guess it could have been a complete failure without some intervention from you guys and your feedback its thanks to Mike that I got hooked on the MV8800 back in 2008,(and thanks to Jim for his V-Synth XT demo that I bought one of those too)I'm a hardware Guy and the MV8800 is still the hub of my setup almost 10 years later,gear has come and gone since then but I'll never part with the MV,the Fantom G6 I had came close to replacing it,but Roland made a huge Faux pas by not porting over the complete MV sequencer into it,the sequencer was great with the large screen but it lacked a lot of the immediacy of the MV and was hugely frustrating to use after working with the MV interface.
    I do hope Roland revisit the MV line in the future I'd like to have a proper Rompler/Analog engine inside which was extra rather than reliant on using the sampler to bring in sounds and the addition of plenty of Audio Recording tracks,even if Roland don't remake this line I'm sure the 8800 will be still be rocking my setup for many years to come,I've used loads of MPCs and Hardware sequencers over the years and nothings ever really rivalled the MV8800 for ease of use I've tried out the MPCx recently it's a great machine and great updated MPC concept but still lacks a lot of the MV's immediacy

    Hey Mike, I've got to tell you what a great influence you've had on so many producers across all genres. I produce Trance (I know you'll get a kick out of that), but I actually started with the MV and still have 3 8000's and 1 8800. I am a hybrid hardware / PC DAW guy and the MVs are an integral part of my workflow regardless of the arrangement. I'm also getting ready to start selling some high-quality hardware pieces just for the 8000 and 8800 (aftermarket VGA / mouse board with HDMI and USB mouse capabilities) and a PC interface board that brings MV video directly back into your PC along with digital audio going both ways along with MIDI so that you can control your MV in your PC DAW like a vsti plugin while viewing the real MV display and controlling it with your PC MIDI gear and vice versa. I've already built almost a dozen prototypes, but I'm trying to get a feel for the market potential to price these out. Without disclosing any confidential info you might have, can you give me a feel for just how many 8000 and 8800 units Roland produced and shipped worldwide before ending production on the series? Thanks again for being such a great advocate and mentor to do many of us. In an industry often filled with people who make themselves unapproachable and even aloof to the novice and hopeful semipro producers out here, you've been a beacon of knowledge and a breath of fresh air showing us that we CAN make great music with the right attitude and work ethic. For that, thank you!

      Hey Brian thanks for the kind words, really appreciate it. Im not sure bout the numbers as it was so long ago but the MV did sell really well, very high numbers and had a pretty long production run in comparison to many other Roland products. The mods your making will this work for Mac users? If so I would love to check that out on a Mac.

    • @mc2engineeringprof
      @mc2engineeringprof 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Acosta Mike: It's largely a hardware device (therefore, OS and PC hardware independent), though I'd need to confirm drivers and libraries for the Mac. I'm about 98% sure that it'll work perfectly fine on osx...though all prototypes to date have been windows tested. Send me an email with a mailing address and I'll whip up a variant for osx, test it out on my MacBook, and assuming that all is well I'll ship you a pre-production prototype for evaluation. I should be able to have it working in a week or so.

    I bought my one new back 2007 and have upgraded it beyond factory limits in terms or RAM, HDD and the OP1 board, even had a DIF-AT and DIF-AT 24 at one point. I use it more as a sequencer. The reason I use it over say Logic or Cubase is because I don't get prompted to update anti-virus or Flash Player when trying to be creative. Finally I sometimes use this as a CD player and have yet to hear a better sounding player. I have tried all sorts of monitors and headphones. I wished Roland still developed it or gave us upgrade options as it is a bit on the slow side for loading samples from HDD. Great video guys.

    Very good video! I remember the MV-8800 very well. In my opinion, I think the price and timing is what lead to it’s downfall (too expensive and the rise of Fruity Loops).
    I do believe Roland previously had some form of the launchable clips/patterns feature with the XP workstations. Thus, the MV-8800 was not the first Roland product with launchable clips/patterns.
    Lastly, I would love to see ADSR continue with these types of videos; interviewing previous designers/team members that worked on the equipment. There are so many units that I would like to learn more about and hear from the actual people that worked and developed them.
