I miss our 74 and 79 F250s. Especially the 79, it had the locking rear axle, manual, straight six. We replaced the engine after the air cleaner wing nut went through the number 4 cylinder. The replacement came from a New Holland 975 combine. Our trucks weren't as restored as yours, but I'd give anything to have them back.
I have this same truck, right down to the same paint. 351M, 4 speed, gear transfer case, heavy towing package. My dad bought it brand new. It will never leave the ranch. Glad to see another out there somewhere. Take care of it, they don't make them like this anymore.
when that metal break line twisted off I was reminded of the frustration I went through with the brake job on the F600. they all twisted off at the wheel cylinders. all four are drum and all four fought me. it seems the later ones developed new ways to fight as they watched me working on the first ones. ended up with a new flaring tool. enjoyed your repair video.
The most difficult part of the job, in my opinion, is installing those keepers/hold down springs. Of course, you had everything out of the way. Just did my '97 E250. What a pita those springs are.
Great shop, right tools, very neat process. Reminds of Oliver 66. All of you guys are great mechanics and philosophers of life in general. Farmers rule!
Jake: My background FYI: farm boy Boone Co. Ill., USAF aircraft mechanic; college degree(s) / GI Bill ,forestry and business; forest industry in MS / AL; trade assn. / lbr. mfg group; dir. of research design lab COA GA Tech. retired in TX. I follow several farming You tubers / science & technology incorporated in their current farming business. Always very informative. Keep it up, Cheers to all of the farmers.
Nice repair Jake, Grandpa has one nice Ford truck. I like how you guys keep everything up and never let it fall in disrepair. Enjoy the weather, it's 60+ here in Mi. Be well, See you next post.
Hi Jake... Thanks for the video. I do pretty much all of my own work but haven't had to do one of these till now. This will help. Thanks again from Alberta Canada
Hey Tim/Jake. What is that large socket tool called that you used to remove the lock ring things once you had the exle shaft out? I am working on a 89 f250 (in Edmonton Alberta) doing drum brake maintenance for the first time and until i saw this vid i had no idea I had to take out all that stuff just to get the brake drum out. Where would i get that large socket tool thing?
that is one beautiful old pu i can see where you get that taking care of stuff. i bought myself a 79 for my graduation present . the the dashes were all the same color i believe mine was moroon with a light brown dash. i had a 302 that ran so smooth that you could not feel it running. that old stuff i could work on . i would have to agree with you discs are much easier . that has front discs though dont it. never seen a flairing tool like that one that is a lot nicer than mine. you can put the springs on with out that tool if you want exercize chasing. great video Jake brings back old memories, or night mares which ever you like.
well we had a renter in one of houses his wife left him. and all he had was a motor cycle to drive .so i told him he could borrow it . our insurence agent told me to not have my name on the title . well i gave him $50 to get the new title . well we had to evect him . he kept my pick up. that was one of dumbest things i done.
Howard Younger dang! I'd have told him to sell the cycle if he's that poor lol. To bad tho I bet it was a nice truck. I'm always worried the spring will whip my knuckles hard
well it needed a paint job i washed and waxed it to much i took the paint right off, it was the best running motor i ever had it was real smooth. i use to hate to see any one hurting . now im not near as nice ,let see you are giving me night mares at night now. i can remember getting the spring right there then it cut loose . then im looking down brake shoes look like a pretzle and i say where are those dam springs.i think i better watch a farming video before bed .
I guess I'm old school Jake. I would take rear drum brakes anyday. Lol i hate rear disc brakes. Gravel roads and disc brakes don't mix. Thats a beautiful truck. Thanks for the video.
I broke a stud getting the wheel off but having difficulty finding this same drum. Everything had the drum and hub separate. Do you know if I can get the parts seperate and it will still work?
Brake work - Yuck! I prefer going to the dentist over doing brake work! I actually just did rear brakes on a 95 F250 this past Sunday afternoon! Same on the inside, but the drum goes on over/outside the hub, so you don't have to remove the hub. Much easier, but still not fun. Thanks for the video!
Jake, I have followed your channel and Oliver 66 farmboy's channel and this morning I decided to check into what Oliver 66 farmboy has been up to and I was unable to locate any videos in his channel. I believe he referred to you from time to time so I thought you might know what has happened to him and his channel. Any information would be appreciated. His channel was enjoyable to watch and the educational value was great. Hope he has not given up on the You Tube video program, he will be missed if that is the case. Thank you for any information you might share regarding Oliver 66 farmboy's channel. Nick, North West Farmer.
Jake, I am extremely sad to hear that circumstances brought him to discontinue his channel! Hopefully, he reads comments on your channel. I wish him the very best outcome(s) in any and all future ventures! Nick, North West Farmer
Paul Brown I believe it they use a lot of salt in the winter here and humid summers don't help either. Life of a vehicle is prolly 20 years around here
Any tips if the drum won’t come off? Have both nuts the spacer and bearing out and it’s stuck up too on something I have beat the shit out of it and can’t get itnoff
Brakes are either stuck out or has wore a groove in it and even when they’re relaxed if won’t pull off. Try opening the bleeder screw and go in from the back side and see if you can pry the shoes closer together
@@jakeziegler599 thanks for the reply, it ended up being the shoes stuck out even with the adjuster all the way in. Ended up using w some bracing and pulling it with the tractor. I appreciate the help.
good for you filming a brake job. No sir, I am not a big swearer, but that will do it every time. I am shocked you didn't sacrifice some blood to the drum brake gods. It isn't a brake job without the loss of blood. Excited for the cows!!
Jake I have another question about the 525. I've decided to do it in an odd scale, 1/12, because that was the scale that allowed me to put in a good amount of detail and not have too many teeny, tiny pieces (I hope, I'm not finished yet). I'm wondering if you could get me the height of the green part of the tank (on the outside) and I was wondering if you could email me a picture of the inside of the tank. I was also wondering if you got the pm I sent you, that has my email in it too. Thanks again for everything you're helping me with, right now I'm doing everything in threes because I would love to make both yours and Oliver66FarmBoy's 525s and I'd like to make a 2890 Moline (I think that's the right model) for myself. I figured if I do them all at the same time I wouldn't forget how to do it on one because I'd have them all right there as I'm making them. Thanks for the second time. Chris.
JakeI seeing here thinking if that break line don't break man you will be luck if anything will tear up on a break it will always be the line but a good video.

Boehm Farm them were some good trucks. And the I6 fords were hard to kill. We have a bad habit of that not selling stuff after we are done with it lol
I have this same truck, right down to the same paint.

My dad bought it brand new.
It will never leave the ranch.

Howard Younger lol chasing😂 glad I could bring u back in time. Those were good heavy trucks. When did u sell ur truck?
well we had a renter in one of houses his wife left him. and all he had was a motor cycle to drive .so i told him he could borrow it . our insurence agent told me to not have my name on the title . well i gave him $50 to get the new title . well we had to evect him . he kept my pick up. that was one of dumbest things i done.
well i also chase a number of springs with the spring tool. you cant beleave how many springs i chased. well i was skinny then.

C&J FARMS haha thanks
I guess I'm old school Jake. I would take rear drum brakes anyday. Lol i hate rear disc brakes. Gravel roads and disc brakes don't mix. Thats a beautiful truck. Thanks for the video.
Also I had to replace the steel brake lines down the frame and between the long front fuel tanks & frame.. the hay & mud had rusted them out..
Well done. Those drums are way harder than your average old set up. But they work. Beautiful paint job by the way.
Nice work Jake, that truck is a real gem.
Massey1105driver thanks
that is a nice old truck thanks for showing it
Very helpful video thank u.im getting ready 2 do my drums on my 78 my first time little nervous
Needforspeed Payback no problem! Just keep track of where the springs and clips go. It’s pretty easy

Good looking truck I really like that flaring tool, you can get good deal on cattle now don't ask how I know sold some while back.

mr Bill that sounds bout like our old f500 we got
Damn I need that socket for the rear axle nut. Any tips on what’s it’s called or how to take it off via other methods
Where do you get that tool at 2:56
Jake shouldn't we put the wheel on when setting end play on bearing ?
I broke a stud getting the wheel off but having difficulty finding this same drum. Everything had the drum and hub separate. Do you know if I can get the parts seperate and it will still work?
I’m not sure and we run 80-90 oil
Me and a friend of mine used to have one of those we used for a back up plow truck. Wasn't nearly as nice though.
Mr Nate haha I wouldn't want to use a nice truck for a plow truck
I've made up my mind, I'm sending the boy to school to become a mechanic. You're old man is a smart guy lol
Mr Nate haha I decided I wanted to do that when I was 12

How many torque for the bearing adjustnut and how many for the locknut?
I can’t remember where I got that info
So you didnt bother putting the auto adjuster back in?
Great tutorial,
Cracking old truck Jake same age as myself, u just don't see old cars or trucks here in the U.K. So dame wet alot of the time they just rust out

U might just replace steel line over to differential, that’s what I did on my 79👍
Thanks for the video man
Wow...this looks way harder to do than other drum brakes I've seen.

NEAFarmKid that's fine with me! I'll measure it tomorrow. Yes 2890 is the same as a 525. I'll check my pm and send u a few pictures thanks!
Yes sir will do.thanks again
JakeI seeing here thinking if that break line don't break man you will be luck if anything will tear up on a break it will always be the line but a good video.
roger wilson thanks roger and ur right about that!
Where did you get the socket for the big nut?
Daniel Nickerson not sure. I think an auto parts store. We’ve had it forever
2 and 9/16ths socket. I bought mine from Amazon
What size is that nut!???
you should always double flare a brake line
I was thinking the same thing.
It's not so much drum brakes, as it is inboard mounted drums.
camera work is making me dizzy.
I live in southern Illinois man. you live down this way?
John Bishop no I'm in the champaign area. What town are u in
you don’t even clean the inside before putting the new parts on??🤣
Moore light.
78 motel
Stop mumbling.
