My family wrote almost daily. It was the best. I kept them afterwards as well. The TI’s never held onto our mail however you just have to use your time wisely to write back!

The DIs let me keep the shampoo and confiscated the rest. 3 days later during free time I told another recruit that I really wanted cookies so I knocked on the hatch and when the DIs answered I yelled “this recruit requests cookies, sir!” The whole platoon looked over at me and the DIs ended up giving me a couple of them. I was so happy.

Clayton there's a company called sandboxx or something close to that, what they do is help out with mailing to your recruits at paris island. It gets there in one or two days, so it's a big help. You should check them out and maybe give them a shoutout too!

In Army BCT, they starting making people open their letters in front of the DS to make sure that people weren't receiving nudes. It sucked because my dad would send me news articles and those sometimes got confiscated. Protip to those out there with kids going to Boot Camp: Find news articles online and print them out with the pictures removed so it looks like a letter. It was great to get current events news once and awhile and it gave you something to talk about with other recruits during downtime. It also meant you could build some "cache" by being the guy people went to for news.
I went to PI for boot camp in mid-Jan of '62. Initially we were issued a portfolio with stamps, envelopes, and stationery . We were able to buy replenishment supplies on our 1st PX call. We could write letters after mail call, which came at about 1945. From 2000 until 2100 was called Free Time. During that hour you squared away your gear, showered/shaved (we shaved in the AM only on inspection days) and wrote letters.

My drills would shake it, say it sounded like cookies, and then drop and 'accidentally' stomp on the package. I once had cough drops confiscated during search after returning from our 2 hour Sunday afternoon leave to enjoy the shitty mini-PX because it was considered 'candy' (Hall's?) and had a can of 'Parade Gloss' Kiwi boot black confiscated as it had to be regular. Letters are the ONLY tangible link you have with the outside world and they were very important to us. (Oh yea, do not let your girlfriend spray perfume on a letter for a drill sergeant to discover.)
I had a AM/FM Walkman while I was in Bootcamp back in 1992. I got lucky. D.I. didnt look through my package that was sent to me by my parents. Usually they make any recruit dump everything out from a package. Not me. he just hand my package without asking me to dump it. Since that day I recieved it. Fire watch was so relaxed and it made time fly hearing music in the radio for me and a few recruits that knew I had that walkman. Before wakeup call whoever had the Walkman last had to hide it at a secret place that not even one of the DI'S wouldnt know it was there. LOL. Damn that is one good memories I had during bootcamp. Off topic ,a marine from the 80's told me that DI'S would tell recruits to "steal" another recruits rifle , causing guys to sleep with their slings wrapped aroing their arm. was he messing with me? yay or nay?
At Parris Island, it was hung on the bunks, and strapped in by a cable and lock. It's still possible to take it, because the combo for the locks are on stickers or tape on the back of the lock. Fire watch at night is sometimes called Rifle Watch. That said, I never heard of it happening in my platoon.
LOL! My mother sent me a musical card for my birthday, and because the envelope was big, one of the DIs made me open it right in front of him... When that card started playing the moment I opened it, oh boy did the games begin! I got smoked HARD on the quarterdeck, and he made the rest of the platoon sing Happy Birthday over & over. Needless to say, I was getting dirty looks from my buddies, because they all wrote to their families not to send cards.

We wrote letters back then and God forbid if you received a letter from someone with doodles on it or a crooked or upside down stamp on it (which I unfortunately did). When a recruit received candy in the mail, it was shared with the rest of the platoon.

But I went to the Marine corps, but didn't make it through boot, halfway through training I started having issues with my side, come to find out I have a hip condition (they dont know whether it was something that physically happened or something that runs in the family that we dont know about. This was all the start of covid and the guy that looked over me ended up just having me sent home. Honorable discharge, medical seperation. I still miss it, anyone trying to go, as gruesome as boot can be, its definitely an amazing experience, you just gotta put aside all the grueling demands and keep pushing. It takes some mental fortitude to get through, but I would do it again (and I know countless others that say that too.) The biggest thing, drill instructors (DI) are just doing a job, it seems mean and nasty but they arent really that way, thats just the job. I had several instructors that when I was being dropped into medical that talked to me like a normal human and not just a recruit, I was lucky, I had pretty ok DI's, I know others that werent so lucky. They are there to train you, and to do a job.

The DS saw all this and he called my name...threw the letter to the side and made me do 20 pushups per year.....I was 19....Luckily he allowed some volunteers to take some of my pushups towards the end....We worked as a group
When I was in AF Basic we had a guy get a box of chocolates, it was the opposite, he got none. Instead the TI had him give everyone else a piece and the TI took the rest. We had to eat it right there on the spot in front of the poor kid. He seriously looked like he was going to cry. It's amazing how, 13 years later I can still remember so much from my time there.

I read a story about a marine mother who got a scripted call from her son who was in boot camp when 9-11 happened so obviously that was shared, but is that a major exception? Would you expect a recruit in boot camp to learn, for instance, who won the World Series? Or what about military related news like the strikes in Syria and Afghanistan?

They can do that, yes. BUT, they can't open your mail. You have to open it, by law. Then they'll do whatever the hell they want. If your gf is dumb enough to send a nude to a kid with 3 d-bag drill instructors and 95 sex-deprived teenagers, she's dumb
You and some of your friends should make comedy plays about how boot camp is. People would really like to see something funny but real. Or other funny stuff in the military. That would be something new and cool.

here's one question. what would happen if a recruit (when he or she arrives at boot camp) doesn't make the required phone call home or to his or her recruiter???
If no contact can be made to his or her parents, the recruit will contact his recruiter. If the recruiter doesn't pick up, the next person in the recruiter's chain of command would be contacted.
My drill sgt in army bct made us cut into our sleep time when he was on cq. we did not have that square away time. this was in feb 2015 so not that long ago

Using sandboxx is a lot faster and you don’t have to buy envelopes and stamps, you do have to buy the letters but it’s so much faster to use

here's one question. what would happen if a recruit (when he or she arrives at boot camp) doesn't make the required phone call home or to his or her recruiter???
If no contact can be made to his or her parents, the recruit will contact his recruiter. If the recruiter doesn't pick up, the next person in the recruiter's chain of command would be contacted.
My drill sgt in army bct made us cut into our sleep time when he was on cq. we did not have that square away time. this was in feb 2015 so not that long ago
