If I find any updates/corrections as to tracking down the illustrator, I'll pin them below! The more this video gets shared and gets seen by more people, the closer we are to uncovering new information!
Also, sorry for censoring some of the album art y'all, despite it not going against the rules (and it being used by others with no issue) the site still took issue with it for some reason. Hope y'all enjoyed regardless though!!🖤
And here's the artists featured as background music! Go support them if you want!
Big Chef, Abuse, SkullXPiercer, Mikkerj, Sugar Wounds, Industrial Forest, & Haircuts for Men
    UPDATES/NEW DISCOVERIES:
-The symbol in general can be found on the Sonik Lobotomy tape from 83, a whole 6 years prior to my discovery! There's conflicting info on whether or not it's bootleg artwork (there was no "official" release) so there's no certainty on the date the art was made, but its a safe bet that it pre-dates my findings!
-Bruh I completely forgot to look at alternative Sore Throat artwork since they use an alternative, simplified version of the symbol on just about everything. BUT the specific illustration mentioned can be found on the inner/back artwork of their 1988 album Unhindered By Talent. Literally hiding in plain sight, somehow slipping by every source I could find lmao. The Art is credited to "Clown" which is a MASSIVE find, as well as providing vocals...however I cannot find any info on who that is exactly. None of the members are listed as having that as a nickname. Clown is listed as doing "All artwork" so it's a safe assumption the logo was from them (unless if the symbol was added as some sort of modern vinyl re-work?) Technically possible, but it's a safe bet we have found the actual origin!! And fun fact: the original symbol actually DOES utilize the empty space at the bottom! I had a hunch something was missing lmao - Sore Throat is most likely the origin of the specific illustration, but the copied version in current circulation is most likely a Magrudergrind rip
THANK YALL FOR SHARING YOUR FINDINGS!! Any new discoveries, please let me know!

6:06 I know that Deche-Charge are using it in their logos and album slips since at least 1994. def not the originators but their vocalist is a mega nerd so he might be a good source for you. If you need help tracking him I can help.
Also I'll have to look into my old tapes but I know there was a similar (but more rudimentary) symbol on albums from an old band from France (circa 1979) that were a big name in the anti-musique (anti-music 👻) mouvement of that era.

Well, Im an old ass grind dude. I used to play guitar for Eat the Living. We never used it but we did play with Bastard Noise and Phobia all the time. I first saw it around 92/93 and I think youre right. A bunch of us like Red Corps… the guitarist was in Homomilita who we also liked.
I would ask someone from Deep Six or Slap a Ham if you can track them down. The first in the US I personally know of was Man is the Bastard. If I remember correctly, which I may not cause I’m 40 now, that Red Corps tape came out in 91’.

The first time I saw the symbol was around 1983-84. A friends older brother was a punk and he had loads of singles and demo tapes from bands from all over the world, and a few of them had it on the cover. He was really into the Anti-Music scene, and gave me a demo tape from a local band called Hoi Polloi, (not to be confused with Oi Polloi from Edinburgh) who used it as thier logo. I don't think they were the first to use it, because he had posters on his wall with the symbol that pre-dated the band by at least a year. As far as I remember, it originated in the very early Industrial/experimental music scene, with bands like Throbbing Gristle, Non, and Suicide. I don't think any of them have the symbol on thier official releases, but I definetly saw it on jackets and patches next to Swans and Neubauten pins.

Old thrasher here. In short, it was a ubiquitous thing that people, bands/tape traders/punks in general, would doodle/tag almost as an afterthought. I'm sure there was a "patient zero" who was the first to do it, but it was something that, post 1982, was quite common, whether it be a fast band or regular punk band (the fast bands of course drew them all the time), tape trader or occasional gig goer. It was kinda something that no one really thought about at the time, similar to circling an "a" as an anarchy symbol not so much as a statement, but out of habit.

    • @itssoezy
      @itssoezy ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think this comment by @selfishfew sums it up. The symbol emerged organically out of the collective subconscious of the grind / punk / anarcho underground. It belongs to The People of the underground - so no need to consider "copyright" issues whatsoever.

Was about to mention this, but I couldn't find them using the symbol in the '60s, I think they probably just adopted it later on and didn't actually invent it. In the '60s they would plaster "NO" on all of their equipment and clothing, which is more in line with what would become no wave.

Fun and fascinating topic for the video. I also have a version of this tattooed on me, and I’m a music teacher. Haha
A slight correction though: the symbol doesn’t feature grace notes, rather just two eighth notes.
I often interpret the meaning of the symbol to be a plain and simple rejection of the traditional styles of music dominant in our society in addition to being a sign of empowerment.
The eighth notes typically represent classical music or any other type stemming from “high culture.” By cancelling them out, we make a claim against the standardization and importance of western music(al notation).
By stating it is in fact noise and not music, we empower our style(s) by reclaiming that word after it was/is used to discredit the legitimacy of the art.
Now to go back to the idea of who made it and why don’t we know, I’m kinda thinking it was too basic of an idea to claim creative ownership. I’m thinking the first person was like, ‘Haha, sick,’ and didn’t think much past that.

Bry from DOOM (UK) was the first guy I knew that was using that symbol (along with 'Noise Annoys') - top or end of every letter, the demo tapes of Doom. He had it on his jacket, wouldn't be surprised if he had a tattoo of it.
Around the same time (86/87) Napalm Death (Mick) used it a fair bit on the top of his tape trading lists.
    Could go on...

Noise not music was written on Discharge records.. and honestly may well have been a phrase employed by other UK / European punk bands from the late 70's .. an organic phrasing of cacophonous / unskilled playing of 2nd wave punk bands as a self own... the anti music note is such a literal visualization of the discharge slogan.. its gotta be a case of simultaneous invention from there.. I'm also pretty sure Disorder or Chaos UK used it early 80's... I mean "used" is a strong word.. its just a natural outgrowth.

To me it seems like the anti music symbol is in the exact same vein as that six line diamond S that everyone drew on their high-school book covers in the 90s and 00s. That symbol had been lost to time and others have tried to source it, but ultimately it most likely an easy to draw symbol that gets the point across about what it stands for.
I mean, A+ for effort, but it's really a question that has no answer.

Neil Breen wouldn't understand the point you made at 10:41 about not crediting yourself for your own work. God bless that man and his films.

The symbol isn't a grace note, it's an eighth note, something that is a lot more common than a grace note. I don't think that really changes anything, but It feels important. The symbol may have gotten mixed up because of the slash across the symbol makes an eighth note look like a grace note, because a grace note is written as a style of eighth note with a slash across it.

This symbol was used in punk in the 80s. One of the band members just copied a badge or patch with the symbol.
