My favorite type of artwork is the "real picture of a corpse that I don't even gonna question how the band got". Like Mortuary Drape - All The Witches Dance
There should be a "Classical Paintings with the Band's logo plastered over it" category. There would probably be enough to make a category with Beksiński paintings alone.
Lmaoooooooo holy shit this is a perfect for some metal album covers haha - I’ve seen so many of his paintings because my brother’s obsessed. You’re so right oh my god
As a visual (and musical but to a lesser extent) artist myself i spend tons of time looking through album art, it's actually usually the way i choose albums to listen to even these days lol, having great cover art is 50% of being a great record to me and it definitely feels like an overlooked aspect of the music world. awesome vid man!
Please check out two hardcore album & band artists - Brian Schroder, aka "Pushead," & his band Septic Death, and Raymond Pettibon, who did most of Black Flags controversial art (except he did NOT do the terrible album "What The").
Hey Tyler!! I just wanted to say pls stick with doing videos your stuff is more thought out then 95% of vids on youtube and you definitely fill a niche that makes it really unique, I hope you start picking up more views and subscribers because you definitely deserve it!! I just wanted to let you know your effort is appreciated in these vids and are genuinely good, keep it up ;)
When it comes to artsy (but good) album arts, I think it's worth mentioning John Dyer Baizley. He did artwork for Baroness, Skeletonwitch, Kylesa, Pig Destroyer, Darkest Hour... All in all, interesting video :)
There's a video where he explains the layering technique he used for the Baroness albums. More labor intensive than I would have guessed, kinda reminded me of the layering that was popular in Da Vinci's time. Somehow looks both minimal yet dynamic (seriously, like they could move at any second) at the same time.
I love when bands use hand drawn album art. End it's EP with the dude smashing the cop car on the front is probably my favorite album art. out of step and choking victim have iconic album art imo, simple drawings and they look cool as fuck
One of my favorite sub-categories is the "First Person View Of Imminent Death" art like: - Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead by Skinless - Gammageddon by Cytotoxin - Retrogore by Aborted
The crazy thing is I’m in my mid 20s and was really contemplating on getting the death card symbol tattooed on my hand thinking it wasn’t too popular of an idea oof
I am an old fuck, and back in the 80's ninety percent of my record purchases were mainly on the cover art alone. If it looked metal and on the back cover there were dudes wearing jeans, a metal band tee and long hair chances were pretty good that I was gonna like the music. Rarely did that criteria not work.
Honestly the discordance axis album cover attracted me to the album and it gives it a nice vibe. Its super clean and simple and uses calm colors and i like that. It affects the music in a way i cant describe
I like how you used Transivanian Hunger for the first category. It's an actual black and white picture they took of an actual human (and edited a bit perhaps)
I'm pretty sure he knows that but he just put it in that category cuz with the corpse paint most people will see it as some kind of monster/spooky guy or whatever, instead of just some normal person, so I think that's why he put it in that category instead of the "someone's face" category. (Also, just btw the photo definitely had a lot of editing done to it for it to look like that)
In *my opinion* , if there was some sort of "Official" album art classification, I would think it would be like this (across all genres, not just heavy music descendant of Blues. But I will demonstrate my point with mostly Metal album covers, as I'm more familiar with them): - Protagonist-based (it means there is one or more "protagonists" in the album cover, such as an object, a fictional character/object, or somebody) see Monolith of Inhumanity by Cattle Decapitation, Spreading the Disease by Anthrax, Show No Mercy by Slayer and most Megadeth and Iron Maiden album covers, etc. - Background-based (it means the album cover is comprised of a panoramic piece detailing such things as a landscape, and optionally multiple objects or characters that work together, and don't draw all the attention to themselves. Rather, the attention must be distributed equitably, including the background upon which they are placed) see Master of Puppets by Metallica, Brave New World by Iron Maiden, Gateways to Annihilation by Morbid Angel, South of Heaven by Slayer, etc. - Abstract (it means the album cover features a piece that lacks any figuration of objectivity, and proposes a new reality distinct to the one that is natural. Such as a collage, a painting, a picture, etc. Keep in mind that album art that falls under the former categories can also be abstract to certain degree, but to fall under this category, all of its features must be stripped totally of any objective sense and must be symbolic or reminiscent of something else) see Reek of Putrefaction by Carcass, Symbolic by Death, and that's it cuz I can't come up with more :P
One of my favorite album cover of all time is Ugly Kid Joe's 'America's Least Wanted' with the cartoonish statue of liberty flipping to the viewer. I think it's really simple and catch the eye of anybody. Like I would spontaneously take my dad's copy of the CD to look at it before even listening to this kind of music
This video was just recommended to me and I couldn't say no. This video introduced me to some new bands -- I've been out of the loop for a few years. Lots of great points. This is my new favorite channel.
I personally think Rings of Saturn has some of the best album art. They're one of those bands where I don't like listening to them too much on my own, but they're one of my favorite bands to see live and I always want to buy their merch because of how cool their album art is. All in all, great video!! And you were right, I literally clicked on this video because of the anime girl album cover. Every time I see it I always think, "Oh hey it's that one band!" It's so recognizable!
found your stuff like 2 days ago, good to know that even 3 years ago you were already putting out some good shit. just nice content to put on the second screen while im doing stuff, thanks.
8:02 Whenever I see a thumbnail involving this band, I have to check out the video. Some of the sound bytes that they use are hilarious when juxtaposed with the actual music.
Loved the video, I didn't recognized the reference in Dishonored, that's really cool. Also randomly Spotify recommended Dehuminizing Itatrain Worship to me and I remember liking the cutesy intro and it suddenly went to slam and I kinda enjoyed it, then I looked at the album art and I liked it even more, I thought at the moment "hmmm... this reminds me of Cannibal Corpes, but anime", because it's less realistic I can look at it and not be as disturbed, also it's pretty much insta-recognizable. I thought they could get in trouble because it's directly inspired from Love Live, the reference is from a concert named µ'sic and the album it's µ'sick, and the characters are easily recognizable even when they're covered in blood.
Wow you have good taste and this video was so well-planned-out, must have taken a ton of prep work to know where to point and what to say for each art and section!
One of my favorite things to do when designing covers is matching the image to the title, like a picture of a car driving the wrong way on a highway paired with a title like "Going Forward in Reverse" or something.
You have to admit... The art from Meshuggah's Obzen is pretty sick. It's basically a quadruple-entendre. Image of a Demon-Buddha with hands forming 3 sixes, etc. . Takes the imagery of the lyrics and makes it "real" IMO. Then again, I'm not exactly unbiased. Tis my favorite album of all time.
Yes, Vektor, Car Bomb, Meshuggah, all showed me that album art really does enhance the listening experience. It jumpstarts the imagery in my head of what I'm listening to before I hear it.
Not heavy whatsoever but one of my favorite album covers that has stuck with me is Breakfast In America by Supertramp, it's extremely creative and feel like it really ties the whole record together. If you haven't listened to it or looked at the cover you should.
While I am yet to watch it, just got off my first day of school after summer and in a public space, but as soon as I get home I will, I am sure it will be a wonderful lovely video, I love everything about it!! I’ll say my opinion once I do, since it’s an interesting topic to me :)
one main category of album art missing from this video is landscape photography or landscape drawing/painting.. pretty much a staple of Northern European style black/folk metal where many album covers are just a photo of some forest, trees, and/or mountains.. or those who wanna be fancy, a landscape oil painting by some 1800s painter or whatever.
@user-vf5ld8ku4p you might need to be more specific on the band/album, but I don't think so. He did however do this one at 3:59, the one that is my icon (Artificial Brain - Labyrinth Constellation), and Lycus's first album Temptest, as well as countless others. You can always tell its him by the muted colors and hundreds of smaller details making up the image. If you search his name on Google images you'll see exactly what I mean.
Interesting topic & video! I'm mostly into old school punk & hardcore, mostly 1980s. I'm sure you touch on this in other videos, but iconic, influential, ultra-talented & creative band & album artwork means mostly two things to me. 1.) Brian Schroeder, AKA "Pushead." His album art is simply the best! Even Metallica used him. His band Septic Death is great, too, and recently a live performance was put on YT! Septic Death was known for rarely performing live with no known recordings. 2.) Raymond Pettibon, perhaps punk rock's greatest artist. He did most of Black Flag's artwork. Controversial & offensive but the best! Last thing - Metal bands that write their names unreadable all suck.
My favorite type of artwork is the "real picture of a corpse that I don't even gonna question how the band got". Like Mortuary Drape - All The Witches Dance
oh. oh i just looked it up. i don't know what i was expecting but i definitely wasn't mislead by this comment
wait until you hear about Dawn of the black hearts
@@csongorcsizmadia6765 I think everyone's heard about it at this point
@@csongorcsizmadia6765 wait until you listen to fucking goregrind
Unsane's first album's cover is basically a photo of a guy decapitated on a train track and it got me real good the first time I saw it
There should be a "Classical Paintings with the Band's logo plastered over it" category.
There would probably be enough to make a category with Beksiński paintings alone.
Luis Royo’s art is used a lot especially in prog rock
deathconsciousness
Most of Arghoslent albums have that.
@@SlyHikari03 GBK is the same way
Eliran Kantor made an entire career out of this aesthetic, and big ups to him for it! Love his work.
What about the genre "Zdzisław Beksiński painting"
Lmaoooooooo holy shit this is a perfect for some metal album covers haha - I’ve seen so many of his paintings because my brother’s obsessed. You’re so right oh my god
My fave genre

This was actually very detailed.
Cool video and good taste 🤘
I love how you were talking about Heavy Music and used funk for transitions
Perfect 😊

Your passion for the subject made this a really interesting and informative video, great editing too

So glad that yt recommended me this video, haven't seen such a top tier editing in a metal video before lmao

Thank you for mentioning Tomb Mold's Planetary Clairvoyance! One of my favorite death metal albums.
I also really enjoy when bands carry a specific art style through all the albums. August Burns Red and Dance Gavin Dance come to mind right away.
Yeah for me it was A Day To Remember with them always having a guy stand there and you see his back, with the exception of the very first album
Kmfdm

8:32 Nice, wasn't expecting to see MCR's Bullets here. Great video by the way!
this was so genuinely entertaining and well made

I feel like Dystopia’s Aftermath cover is a great example of the collage core style
Very well thought-out video. You also found a way to incorporate a sizable chunk of my favorite albums as examples, which made me happy. Cheers!
I am an old fuck, and back in the 80's ninety percent of my record purchases were mainly on the cover art alone. can't imagine how long this took to make and the accuracy ... thank u

8:04 this man is very brave for putting this uncensored in a TH-cam video
Arguably my favourite video on youtube (and the logos one). I come back to it so much, for some reason.
I like how you used Transivanian Hunger for the first category. It's an actual black and white picture they took of an actual human (and edited a bit perhaps)

I would also add Still Life by Opeth to the Protagonist Based ones
I’m not typically a “collage” style album art fan, but I love the way “Olidous Operettas”from The County Medical Examiners looks
blue castles in the stormy distance is my favorite genre of black metal
my favorite genre is "screenshot from liveleak just barely censored enough to be allowed"

hardcore needs a subgenre of “someone’s dog”
Love the analytics and thought gone into this not just for the viewers side but also using that for a bands business/branding perspective

My favorite genre of metal album art is just random dismembered drawings like autopsy, abscess albums
It's just so fun
The quality of this was excellent and this is criminally underrated - thanks so much for making these videos!
5:16 I was not expecting Dr. Dre in this discussion lmao
Awesome video man. Just makes me love metal album artwork even more!

This is such a good video, I’m looking foreword for more content!

Emperor’s “In The Nightside Eclipse” is one of the finest pieces of album cover art ever made (the darker tint version, not the purple bright one)
Hey man just wanted to say i love your channel and im so glad there are metal youtubers out there that are actually funny and arent bigots
Why haven't I heard of the BVB minions Facebook post till now, this is gold

i've been binging your videos over the past week but holy fucking shit this one's a whole other level of good, excellent job!
Green jello always had badass album art.

Damn so many albums that i know that came up in this video. For some reason it kept surprising me. You have digged deep in the heavy albums
finally some good fucking original content. i wuv u crusty king
Finnaly so e talks about metal and artworks! Thanks for that!

as a visual artist, I love album art, I really want to work on some someday
6:40 yess code orange! they're a great band with some sick album covers
Best brown album art is easily Pissgraves Suicide Euphoria
one main category of album art missing from this video is landscape photography or landscape drawing/painting.. pretty much a staple of Northern European style black/folk metal where many album covers are just a photo of some forest, trees, and/or mountains.. or those who wanna be fancy, a landscape oil painting by some 1800s painter or whatever.
TH-cam recommended this video to me and as a result, I am now in love with Dehumanizing Itatrain Worship. Thank you
loved spotting good records flash by in each catagory lol. love your videos.
Thx for the vid, there were some nice bands that I didnt know that were def worth to check out.
The coolest spooky landscape album art imo is Chasms by Lycus
Also, anything painted by Paolo Girardi is an instant classic.
Did Paolo make the Black Tongue cover art?

Love these kinds of videos. Also, what a king for not fucking around with intros and outros that give everything a weird influencer feel lmao
The Motionless in white graveyard shift looks like a bookcover to me
AnalTrump was a tribute to the original cover of Neurosis debut, the neurosis album was later issued with the Bud Dwyer image as cover
Pissgraves album covers are so crazy.Putting pictures of dead bodies on album covers is insane
dude your channel is gonna blow up soon, lats week you had 5k subs, now 10. great work, thanks for the effort!
Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper is probably my favorite album cover
I think powerviolence, crust and grind is where it’s at.
Also Taylor Swifts new album.
