The subtitles might have said "hammered" but what she actually said was "mullered". British slang for extremely drunk.
They translated it into "American," apparently.
Mi5 is Military intelligence 5, The security service, intelligence networks, counter-terrorism and homeland security stuff.
James Bond works for Mi6, which is the secret intelligence service.
Mi5 is like the FBI and NSA, Mi6 is like the CIA
@@wolfwarrior9451 exactly
Yep. Torchwood xD. (It gets so much better though. So. Much. Better. XD)
a couple more episodes remain which are unnecessarily "edgy", but the lore does steadily build to a satisfying universe
yes, most of them have welsh accents, and mi5 is basically the british version of the fbi
mi5 is more like the CIA and scotland yard is like the fbi
@@rmora1 MI6 is more like the CIA as it's more for overseas intelligence, not domestic. MI5 has some elements like the FBI but also some like other U.S. agencies. It's not exactly one-to-one. Scotland Yard has some functions like the FBI but not others and some the FBI doesn't have. It's not an exact one to one but James Bond works for MI6 (notably, the chief of MI6 has stated Bond couldn't work for them because of his propensity for lawbreaking).
@@HuntingViolets so Mi5 is the NSA?
@@rmora1 Sort of?
@@rmora1 Basically, MI5=Counter-Intelligence (catch the enemy's spies), MI6=Intelligence (spy on the enemy). In practise MI5 has a slightly wider domestic intelligence role eg in counter-terrorism.
Cardiff is located in Wales. One of BBC's studios is located in Cardiff, and Doctor Who and Torchwood were filmed there. That is why so many people have a Welsh accent.
I remember watching this when I was 10 and even then feeling like it was a bit too ridiculous 😅 it was like a test to see who would keep watching and those that stick it out will get great episodes later
Omg yes!! Like a test and heads up lol
There's familiar music playing when Jack's holding the hand from the tank.
Torchwood right now is basically still figuring out how best to use it's higher age rating, in time they figure out a good balance I'd say.
Still stand by the fact that Torchwood has the best writing in the Who universe in some episodes ever. Incredible stuff coming. Even the Doctor’s story can’t top some in regards of the direct storyline wrapping up. The mature rating helps a lot for the show to tell some character parts.
The show is set in Wale's capital city (Cardiff), which is why so many characters are Welsh. You'll find that they don't just have Welsh accents but also Welsh attitudes. As a Welshman myself I always find it funny how Welsh the Welsh characters in the show are.
I find it funny how at the very start Ianto is basically extra Welsh compared to how he is in pretty much the entire rest of the series 😂
Apart from sex gas plot i think it's great at showing how Gwen gets to know more about Torchwood and gets used to their chaotic work environment, shows the difference between the team and her
It's actually a prominent thing in the first season, plot might be meh but character work is always on point, even if you may not particularly like the characters
Can people stop spoiling things in the comments? It’s so rare for a reactor not to know things and y’all are ruining it.
> Doctor Who fans
> Not spoil things
Pick one. 😂😂😂
One would think of all people Dr Who fans would be educated about the importance of spoilers…
I've not seen any spoilers in the comments.
@@Harry_SS I’m not seeing outright spoilers of things that someone couldn’t guess from what the show has already shown, but there are a number of comments that are pushing hard at explanations that the show has only vaguely hinted at and doesn’t explain outright until later. These are a form of mild spoiler in that they push the reactor to figure things out earlier than they might otherwise have and take away some of the mystery and any chance at a surprise when the show does get around to explaining clearly.
@@AdamNisbett Is this referring to the hand in the jar? I’m pretty sure she will have already seen that episode and just not uploaded yet as a few weeks ahead on recording. Still yes people shouldn’t comment on it.
It's set in Cardiff, Wales so yes most have a welsh accent
Yes the accent is Welsh, South East Wales and Cardiff.
You have seen the hand before, it does have significance - you'll see
Totally fair reaction. Some of torchwood is really hard work, for exactly the reasons you state. Luckily there are some gems along the way.
Yeah, the accent is very strong South Walian, specifically the Cardiff area if you can tell the difference, I can't for South Wales.
I'm from North Wales, the strong accent here is very different but still obviously Welsh.
MI5 is Domestic Intelligence.
MI6 is Foreign Intelligence.
Just think CIA. Spies and shit.
Mi5 is the British FBI. James Bond worked for Mi6, the British CIA.
Meteor crashes. Cracks open. Reases Purple glowing mist. And the first thing she says is "What on Earth is that" - I mean... it just arrived so I'm not sure "on earth" was the best word choice.
Just teasing love the reaction you have to this "universe" of the Doctor... and Jack.
This show... and series, and universe is... complex and "mature" is a good word for it. They talk about concepts that adults would understand and and younger viewers would not.
8:06-08 yeah most of them are Welsh, as for that word “mullered” I think that must be specifically Welsh cos I’ve lived in England all my life and I’m 23 & I’ve never heard it used in real life 😂
10:31 MI5 is the British government agency most similar to the FBI and NSA. (MI6, made famous by James Bond, is most similar to the CIA.)
no, pretty sure not legal in a bathroom, but I'm not sure about the UK tho...how often it happens is up in the air, probably more than expected and less than claimed....
It isn’t legal in the UK.
There aren't many laws against public sex in the UK, but bathrooms are one of them.
Anywhere else basically falls under "outraging public decency" so unless it's somewhere where you're clearly going to be seen by people that don't want to see you, you're in the clear.
@@CaJaAr9469Thankfully, not many people can be bothered to climb the stairs to the Wetherspoons women's toilets.
TW is definitely guilty of 'sexing up' the stories in a way to make all characters seem like oversexed, bisexual and impulsive in a way that definitely doesnt feel like the world most people live in. I find it mostly a thing to shrug at, and enjoy the actual stories they do get round to eventually.
Cardiff kind of is like that though. South Wales is a pretty horny place
@@MrGeorgFTWit's the accent, just does it for everyone, even people from Cardiff
This, ironically, is the same complaint I have with Rogue.
@@jeffcarey3045 A single impulsive romance isn't really the same thing as sex gas
Torchwood gets better as it goes along. Season 1 was .... shakey (BUT it does have some amazing episodes near the end of the season). Season 2 and especially 3 are good. BUT its way more sexualized (this season in particular) than Who
The hand is never explicitly explained in torchwood, but it does come up again.
Also there’s a familiar musical theme that hints at it.
And technically speaking, we've also seen that hands *before* Torchwood
If I remember correctly. MI 5 is like the FBI and MI6 is like the CIA. James Bond is MI6.
THANKS for this!!!!! And remember: we're here to hear what you think!!!
I find it hilarious that the vibes you got from Torchwood is that a lot of people liked it, which, yeah, it's true, but you also missed the fact that the general consensus is that the first half of S1 is a hilariously rough start. It picks up later in the season, but christ alive, these early episodes, man. They are something else. 😅
When he died in doctor who, rose brought him back to life, but overdid it!
I am a massive Doctor who fan and also just started watching Torchwood for the first time and hahaha my feelings towards the show are the same im not sure if ill continue watching it. Im giving the first season a go though but yeah i get the same vibe its being edgy where as doctor who is wholesome and a little more edgy but rides the line better.
I will say tho, it does bring up dialogue in regards to sexual trauma. The girl ultimately was used by the alien and forced into those acts. The mental trauma she will have to now cope with and over some is heart breaking! But additionally it speaks to the risks of promiscuity for both men and women. Annnnd it also showed how lust can cause you do unwittingly and even against your own morales do some questionable things moraly. Because when you think about gwen kissing the girl, gwen had full knowledge that this poor girl was being used by the alien to commit acts she didn't want to. And Gwen kissing her back and going in on it was even more messed up given that context for her and the torchwood team watching! Depending on how you look at it the writing could be really good or could have failed. Because Gwens character was being built up to her being the moraley good character who has humanity, compasion and empathy that can help the team but in this story her actions betray that which is either a layer of complexity dont well or a character consistency failure! All in all though very interesting to consider from that perspective
@7:27 nope😂that’s definitely not standard practice here in the UK, that guy was just a massive pervert 💀😂😂
She didn't say 'hammered' she said 'mullered'. Same meaning just more pissed.
Doctor Who: A family show about a quirky alien that travels their universe in a magic box encountering all sorts of fantastical creatures, some creepy, some cheesy and some cute. Usually keeps things PG but sometimes swings into PG-13 territory.
Torchwood: Same universe but with a lot more focus on the SEX and other adult content
Another spinoff series was The Sarah Jane Adventures. This series was more kid oriented, kid-friendly. The series protagonist was Sarah Jane Smith, the doctor's travelling companion from the 1973-76 seasons. Her re-appearance during the David Tennant era re-introduced her character and launched her spinoff series.
@@timmooney7528 Yes I know of Sarah Jane and her spinoff.
@@thedoctor4327 Good. I was adding this for other viewers new to the franchise.
Your reactions are wonderful 😊
Torchwood is located in Cardiff, which is in Wales. There are a lot of accents in the United States too, and that's all one country. (I'm not "having a go" at you or anything; I just can't come up with a more elegant way to express this.
Most of Torchwood is not really for me, but some episodes in S2 & all of S3 are some of the best eps in Torchwood & Doctor Who.
Don't vape purple sex gas 👀
Just wait until you find out how being unable to be killed does, in fact, not lead to the elimination of jeopardy
The hand does have some kind of significance, keep watching👀
Thanks, Emme! 🔦🪵 This show will blow your mind by the time you're done
you made it through sex gas. only up from here lol
It was a shame that Sarah Gregory who played Carys Fletcher wasn't in much else other than Torchwood. She seemed like a really talented and great actress.
Also, I don't mind this episode, yes it's a naff concept but I have fun with it. BTW the writer Chris Chibnall does write some future episodes of Doctor Who as well as Torchwood and later became showruner for Series 11 to 13 which starred Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor.
It gets better. It just takes a while to find its feet.
I would say this is the one with the most gratuitous sex without some character building behind it.
Gwen as a British Cop will have minimal if any Gun exposure. When this was filmed, British bobbies (Cops) did not carry guns.
"When this was filmed, British bobbies (Cops) did not carry guns" and still don't. Even those officers specifically trained and authorised as 'firearms' officers don't routinely carry guns--although they are available when required. The only exceptions are officers on royal/VIP protection duty and officers in Northern Ireland.
Less than 5% of British police are firearms trained.
Hello Emme!😊 Great to see you reacting to this series, as I think it often gets overlooked.😉 You will here the backstory on Jack not aging on a guest star episode(s) of Doctor Who. Cameras are 100% not allowed in bathrooms or changing rooms in the U.S. I don't know about the UK. Eve Myles (Gwen) is a Welsh actress, Emme.😉 MI5 is the British version of the FBI and only operate within the UK. MI6 is equivalent to the CIA, and operate outside the UK. The fictional James Bond is part of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), also known as MI6. Yeah, I think this is as mature as it gets, probably to establish the tone like you said, Emme. This is not a series like The Boys, don't worry.😉 Great reactions to your second episode of Torchwood, Emme!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Hang in there. It takes a new series a while to get into its groove.
This episode was really awkward when I watch it with my parents. 😂 Told you Torchwood has more to it than Doctor Who.
Think it's worth watching just for S3 Children of Earth which is very good.
10:41 MI5/MI6 is basically the British version of the CIA.
MI6 is CIA equivalent. MI5 is FBI equivalent
The hand belongs to someone we already know.
Spoilers!
@@XanderWhovian Is it? I knew whose hand that was right away.
@@jeffcarey3045 not everyone does tho so it's something that doesn't need to be said cos those who know, know and could spoil it for others who don't.
Torchwood turned up the adult based stuff to where a teenager would enjoy this. Swearing and Sex
MI5 is the FBI for England.
Mi5 = Military intelligence, the people James Bond works for. Mi6 is the domestic intelligence agency for the U.K. Remember the first David Tennent Dr Who episode when the doctor got his hand cut off but it grew back because he was still regenerating? That's what's in the jar.
Actually I think you’ve got it flipped. Mi6 is the foreign intelligence agency. That’s why Bond’s missions are often international and interacts with the CIA. Mi5 is the internal agency corresponding with the FBI.
@@zemoxian You are right. My brain is going...
Probably the finest example of Torchwood definitely not being a family show😂With all the sex & violence Doctor Who doesn't have, that seemed to be the main theme for this 1st season.. I love it though.
Jack is from a different era when describing a woman might be different lol
MI5 is like CIA/FBI in uk
more like FBI / homeland security
MI6 would be like CIA
Europeans are definitely more comfortable with plutonic kisses on the lips. I don’t think that is really a thing in the US
you mean plAtonic ?
Fallout is where you get plUtonic kisses....
Torchwood too edgy? Say it isn't so!
RTD wanted the storytelling freedom of being a mature "post-watershed" show. Especially in the first season, it often seemed like he felt the need to justify that . . . or RTD and the writers were just REALLY horny and brooding.
There is an _X-Files_ episode to which this is very similar.
Aliens using humans as drugs, Emme, you should just go ahead and put a pin in that concept for now, for later on down the road in this series.
is it really so hard for some people to just not talk
dont worry, it gets better and better, i think u will cry more here than in doctor who! :)
If I recall, all the publicity before the show started included Suzie as being main cast like the others, to hide the twist!
Not wishing to overload a busy schedule, but anyone else think Emme should do the trifecta and watch The Sarah Jane Adventures too? That was a golden age of: Doctor Who (family show), Torchwood (adults) and SJA (for the kids, but still great stories)
What theme played when Jack looked at hand?
"Class" went one step further.
chris chibnall strikes again
Well RTD is the overseer so RTD strikes again
Torchwood is low lows and extremely high highs. Season 1 is the least consistent in terms of quality and imo it's at its best in season 3
💨
Torchwood gets better at series 2.
She didn't even use tongue.
Having not to fear the loss of life....
oh my dear summer child...
you will sooner or later learn, that there are things far more frightening or gruesome, than dying....
think of the doctor... having to live on while you lost people dear to you....
but there are even worse fates out there...
MI-5 is the British equivalent to the US FBI.
MI-6 is the equivalent to the CIA
The hand in the jar: Doctor Who Christmas episode that introduced the 10th Doctor, David Tennant.
This episode is probably the most questionable episode. It really seems like they thought they needed to show it was an adult show early on but didn't put more thought into it then that.
Also, the Torchwood team is a group of deeply flawed individuals. They'll do some questionable things, you're not supposed to support them just because they're the main characters.
Yeah Jack being immortal and Gwen being related to Gwen of S1 E3 of DW I think (not just oh same actor). In games having a dead character means more for puzzles or different use cases for their body parts for gameplay, in a movie or TV show yeah hard to tell how they will use them in situations sometimes but make the most of them in particular situations. I think they use Jack's deaths and returns well in this show as they do DW.
The rating for the blood/swearing is fair but the characterisation is a bit ridiculous. Typical 2000s. Sure gross out movies were a thing but in other cases it's like a romcom where in those it kind of makes sense but in an action show it's a bit weird the oh we struggle to have relationships due to the work Torchwood requires, sure but the way they do it is a bit ridiculous.
Yeah editing because the themes are a bit weird.
Yeah the old worker thing.
CC TV I think is in key areas, if in bathrooms I do wonder but outside the stalls viewing the sinks or in the doorway maybe but as due to privacy I'd usually assume not in bathrooms.
The hand in the jar for one character is more DW S3 & 4 spoilers. For Jack though I don't remember it's significance.
Ah pheromones classic adult rating show or game magic excuse.
I think it lessens and it has more Doctor Who like stories over time. I remember that being the case besides the few adult ones in some. But yeah the early on shock factor is a bit much.
UK police doesn't do guns at all expect special forces,
Wrong we do have armed response officers in fact you see them all the time you can tell if it's a armed response car it will have a yellow star in the window and the the cop's that stand outside 10 downing Street are armed they are called diplomatic protection squad and also the northern Irish police are all armed
@@richardwani2803 not in Scotland we don't
@@StephanieMaireFaith so your telling me that there are no armed response cop's in Scotland I find that very hard to believe we have armed response officers were I live in Derby Derbyshire England in the Eastmidlands if people have weapons who deals with that then
@@richardwani2803 yes their no police with guns at all here not after the gun massacre wat happened years ago in Dunblane with kids and teachers getting killed, all guns have been banned,
now Emme don't you go out partying and absorbing any party goers now.
This episode is one of the low points of the series, and you're past it now. There are still a few more turkeys to come yet, but by the second half of the season, you'll have got past all the 'edgy for the sake of being edgy' stuff.
This is one of the lowest ranked episodes of the show, so it can only go up from here
demon slayer pls
She already watches that show
Roughly halfway through this episode is where I rolled my eyes and switched off the show, back when it was airing. I was hoping for the show to touch on more 'mature' themes, but not like this. Doesn't help that they seem to go out of their way to make the main cast incredibly unlikable, either.
I have since gone back and watched it all, and it does end up reaching its potential (mainly in S2 and 3), but this first season can be a slog to get through.
If I remember correctly. MI 5 is like the FBI and MI6 is like the CIA. James Bond is MI6.
