      I am afraid I have not but I know the gist of it. That the Roman people were a political force and could use it when it mattered. Despotism tempered by angery mob and rebellion as it were.

    • @EasternRomanHistory

      You are correct, Viri does not mean very, my fault that my Latin is not something I have mastered, but the point I wanted to get across was that even the upper classes of Roman society was heavily stratified. Hope that clears things up.

    04:16 - Wait, what? You think that "vir illustris" means "very illustrious"? "Vir" means "man." An illustris and a vir illustris _are the same thing._ You think that the viri illustres were a separate class from illustres ("Vir I.P.s")? That's not just wrong, it's gibberish. Where on earth did you get such an idea?

    • @EasternRomanHistory
      @EasternRomanHistory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the History of the Later Roman Empire by J B Bury, p19, I read that within the classes of senotors, Illustres, Spectabiles and Clarissimi, there were further subvisions but not seperate classes in themselves. While, upon reflection I quite cavalierly translated the Latin, it does make the point that among the senatorial aristocracy there was a great stratification of status. I appear to have borrowed the viri from Viri Consulares to illustrate this point but, as you say, mistakenly so. Thanks for the comment.

    Many people stick on the early Roman history , where there was political termoil and the majority of European people were savages living under wooden roofs or so...That period the Roman empire is an infant and the east is more than that, the greeks are behaving much more like despots rather than enlightened rulers(no doubt they financed science, yet more out of prestige rather than actual interest.) The Romans are starting their mature career the day Vespasian visited the greek colony of Cyrene in Africa. , from this day there is a shift on how important we must feel being carrier and protectors of this legacy rather than expanding on savages, the prestige is here and not in the villages of Germany.So skipping the mature Roman empire and sticking to the Roman infant is like skipping a documentary about Quantum mechanics to watch one about Britney Spears 😒😒.
