Great video! I got pick pocketed in Barcelona because a charming man offered to help me carry my suitcase up and down the stairs in the metro while his friend pick pocketed me. Fortunately I felt something was wrong and spotted him lifting my camera and screamed and the attention stopped it, but couldn’t believe I fell for it. Just beware of friendly, helpful men in metros.

That's such a shame! I am so grateful when I'm with Eleonore, my daughter and her stroller, all my stuff etc.. and someone offers to help me up the stairs. Now i'm going to be like "NOOOOO" and i really really appreciated that help hahaha.

We were nearly pickpocketed trying to bring suitcases down a flight of stairs at one of Chicago's elevated train stations, (one of the few without an elevator). It was like being caught up in a scene out of Oliver Twist. We learned a valuable lesson that day: always take a taxi from the airport to the hotel and don't try to save a few dollars by taking the train if you're loaded down with luggage.

Pretty much if you live in a big city, or go to one often, even US cities; NYC, San Fransico, certain areas in Boston, etc. There all the same. This is still useful information so that you could keep an eye out for the scams in Paris, but pretty much if you live in a metro area anywhere in the world, it's just having common sense.

Ahhh enjoy! I think the clipboard people are actually the most common. You'll see this women at every single tourist spot and area you can imagine and if you eat at a restaurant in any of these areas outside, they really go after you at the tables. Just really watch out for your money and telephone!

The fake petition scam happened to my friend and me in the Tuileries Garden. Luckily, I realized what was happening (my friend is like Bambi, she was trying to be nice to them) and stopped walking and looked behind my friend. Sure enough, one of the 2 scammers had her hand in my friend's purse! I grabbed her hand and threw her on the gravel, yelling every bad word I've ever learned in French. They ran away, laughing, because they know they won't be caught. Luckily, they hadn't had time to get anything out of the purse.

That reminds me of a story with the cardboard women.
We were walking in the center with my beloved (she is Russian) and one of these cardboard women comes to me and asks me if I speak english. I replied in Russian to throw them off, they kept insisting, so I took the cardboard and threw it in the Seine. Then I yelled "CASSE-TOI" to make them flee. My voice is low pitched and goes far, and I do lyrical singing so I can be very loud without any problem, so I guess it scared them at least a bit.
My GF gave me weird looks, but I don't give a shit. I despise scammers, especially if they ask you to speak English on the bridge of Sully, and especially since I know they would have targeted people like her.

A twist on the roses thing, in Charleston SC young kids will make braided roses from I think palm leaves and then walk up and literally shove them into people's hands and then aggressively demand money. My Mom always falls for this stuff. I have to gently gather her and lead her away and they act like they can't take the rose back. I'm like, if you won't take it back then I don't owe you anything for it. I am placing it on the ground and walking away. Sure is fun getting called a bitch afterward! Vegas too. They walk up and offer to take a photo and then demand cash for it after they have pulled my Mom in for a pic. They dress like Spiderman or Freddy Krueger or even just showgirls. I'd have no problem paying for the photos if they said it BEFORE. I just walk away. Stop taking advantage of my kindly, elderly Mother!

@@UnintentionallyFrenchified I really think information like this, helps Americans who don't live in urban hubs. Which, is a huge chunk given the size and lack of public transportation in The States. That is why I think a lot of Americans fall prey to these scams either abroad or in a city like NYC or San Fransico. Your advice of just walking by with your arms crossed, without making eye contact, is what New Yorkers do all the time, vs those from the midwest.

I experianced that clipboard a few times, never talked to these people. I also had one time a person that claimed that he was robbed and his wife is far from him with his kids, and he needs money to get public transportation to see them, and when you ask why they don't go to the police they make up some story. After he realised he's not going to get money from us, he gave up. His first sentence by the way was- do you speak English, and it was at Champs-Élysées

I've had a very similar experience with a guy from "ireland" with his whole family and they got mugged the night before and can't get home. But as you said, as soon as you say did you go the police, the whole story starts to unravel big time and then you're really not comfortable just wiring money to a random account!

First visit to Paris....taking pics of other tourists near Notre Dame/on the Seine. People swarm me (who are "deaf") and want me to sign their clipboard....blah blah blah. A few moments later...I open my purse....and am missing a tea towel I bought as a gift and a half-eaten baguette sandwich. I count myself lucky that nothing else was missing. And although I am mortified that I then lived up to every cliche about a middle aged American woman....I confronted them and told them they were awful people (I hang my head in shame). We are heading back for another visit...and I'll be more careful. Sigh.....

These scams are not limited to Paris. You will encounter the exact same people doing the exact same thing in London, Prague or Milan. In a nutshell all over Europe. These scammers belong to a large gang. My advice to any tourist visiting any European city is to never answer people who approach you first, always be the one initiating the contact. Also without being prejudice, these scammers are not nationals but almost always from the same community. With a good eye, you should spot them a mile away.

Okay so I have a simplified version of the Navigo parisian Metro pass as I only visit Paris once every 3 months, and during my last trip I wanted to add a trip to the CDG airport but didn't know you couldn't do it, until some friendly guy came up to me and told me I had to buy a separate ticket. I spoke to them in english as it's the language they first used when speaking to me, and they helped me through the process until came the moment I had to pay and when I pulled out my card.
Then they said "The machine reads" pointing at random text written in french "that you can only pay by card for sums inferior to 2€, otherwise you need to pay by cash", and then I realized he was gonna ask for some of it afterwards. Luckily I got a phone call right after he said that, interupting our conversation and giving me an opportunity to flee.
If he had actually helped me through the process and didn't lie right at the end, I would've tipped him for the help, but he went too far.

Some scammers start off by saying "Do you speak ...." in 4-5 in a rapid-fire manner (typically Chinese, Russian, Spanish) and if you make eye contact even for a split second or open your mouth they'll try to detect the language and switch to that. It's incredible. Granted, Russian (my first language) is quite widely spoken but you have to give it to them, they mastered what a lot of adults can't!

It is very hard for me to imagine a real French person, who embraces the French culture, who eats 3 times a day with no snacking, who is interested in learning, to behave with the "pay up" or "let's cash in on the person that lost her wedding band". i feel those scammers might have a French passport, but it sounds like they never embraced the culture of politeness and civility that comes with being French. if you revisit this topic in a future video, i hope you will discuss that angle.

My mother and her friends got pick-pocketed at the Ritz in Paris! Long story, short: they were stupid and pretty much made their items available to be easily picked.
I live near San Francisco, so I hate that touristy stuff where people walk up to you (I once told a "beloved" SF icon to "eff off" as he was bugging me. (Some would feel shame... I count it as a feather in my cap!) My tendency is to ignore those people--or when they start to touch me (that wrist thing), I become "a loud American" and tell them to stop. Oh two scams from Budapest: (1) waiters can add 'mandatory tip' with ink at the bottom of your printed receipt, and also change the total in ink and try to explain you that the amount in ink (the larger amount) is the one you owe. This is a scam, tips are not mandatory unless it's the restaurant's policy, in which case it will be printed on the receipt just like everything else. If it's in ink, feel free to ignore. They may get aggressive though=) (2) you get in a cab, and at arrival instead of the total that the counter shows, the driver will say that it's actually two-three times that amount because it's 'night tariff' or some other BS like that. Feel free to ignore and just pay what the counter shows. However, they may get aggressive! One friend was even beaten up by the driver (almost 10 years ago though=)

I grew up and live in multiple metropolitan cities. In all but one (Singapore being the exception), I walk about with this face on: ಠ_ಠ lol, I generally walk fast and unless there's something like a car accident etc., I don't stop for anyone. I came across three of these types of scams on my first visit to Paris (the clipboard one might also be 'tourists' asking for direction with a map - lol, yes, a physical map in the age of smartphones). After I reverted to the above ^ expression, I wasn't bothered as much.
On one visit though, my family and I got a bit turned around and as we were standing there (squabbling, if I'm being honest), we noticed this one lady who kept looking at us from the bus stop. After we noticed her, we kept glancing at her too. It was so obvious and hilarious that we were both sort of suspicious of one another but wanted to communicate (us for help, and her to offer help). After about 15 minutes of getting nowhere, we finally somehow made contact and she ended up helping us. She was the first 'nice person' we ever met in Paris. Wherever she is now, I hope she's doing really well in life, haha.

More seriously in any big city in Europe, nobody would talk to you in the street for free, there must be either selling sthing or trying to steal, so let's not engage and say you're not interested.
