I love living in France as an American and as an expat. I love French products, French culture. French lifestyle, French habits, French mentality, I love a lot of things about France. But sometimes, just sometimes, I really really need an American product that i can't find in France, or i can find, but it's CRAZY expensive.
After I came back from the US and lugged my suitcase full of American products to Paris, i felt like it was the perrrrrfect opportunity to show you my haul and the American things I just can't live without. Hopefully I'll be convincing enough that these will become the American products you want to bring to France :)
👉 Let me know what products you can't live without when you are abroad or what products you think you wouldn't be able to live without if you moved!

Burt’s Bees chapstick! That last time I was home, I walked out of Target with 4 boxes. And chili powder. I have been to every Indian, Asian, and Latin American grocery store in Vienna and the “chili powder” is really cayenne pepper. Was not a fun mistake to make.

I'm French but I like peanut butter too, and I agree it's relatively expensive. My favorite is the "natural" kind which only contains peanuts. It's not the easiest to find, even in stores that sell organic food.

Totally, peanut butter was nowhere 10 years ago when I first got to France, but now it's EVERYWHERE. The natural one is really good (it's what i've given my daughter) and easy to find in the organic stores.

P.s. have you ever fallen in love with a product abroad and then bought the "same" thing at home, but it's not truly the same? Sometimes ingredients are sourced differently in different manufacturing plants, so even though the ingredient name is the same, the quality is not. Other times they straight up change the ingredients due to local food regulations or local preferences. I loved a certain perfume in Scotland, but the bottles in the U.S. do not smell quite the same. 😪

Canadian living in French speaking region of Switzerland: I too fill up a huge suitcase when I go back home. First stop Costco for huge jars/bottles/packages of Hellman’s Mayonnaise, Skippy Peanut Butter, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, Tylenol, Advil, allergy medication, Bisquick, Vanilla extract, baking powder, cashews, tide stick to Go, I even bring back Strawberry Bonne Maman jam because the jar is so enormous compared to the Swiss jars, top sheets for the bed because they don’t have them in Switzerland. Hello Kate,
    Happy to find you again.
Most food supplements aren't so popular in France like they can be in USA. Cause in fact, their effectiveness is most often questioned. Especially since in France, our eating habits are on the whole quite healthy and we eat a very varied food. If we vary the foods well, normally, food supplements are unnecessary.
Most centenarians in France have never consumed a dietary supplement in their life.
I take this comment to give you the title of a color video on Paris in the 60s promoted by an American: "Paris La Vie Parisienne (1965)" (in English) on "British Pathé
    " YT channel.
In fact, what's funny is that we realize we could do almost the same video today.
The French lifestyle habits are really anchored in us. 😀

My haul from a month ago: big bottle of ibuprofen, cream of tartar, baking powder in scoop-able can, instant pudding powder, red pepper flakes, and shredded coconut (instead of coconut "snow" that they have here in France). Pretty much all food ! ;) Didn't pay for checked luggage, so they come with me in my carry-on and I always have to get extra screening in security because all that white powder definitely looks like drugs. Love it that you started with a big bottle of Ibuprofen! And peanut butter! Those are always in my "incoming suitcase." And in addition to stain removers, hand sanitizing towelettes... which before Covid were impossible to find in France.
As others mentioned, I bring Ziplock bags and aluminum foil as well. And Neosporin, as well as Gas-X.
Also: vibrating toothbrushes, Arm & Hammer toothpaste, and Dry Idea deodorant. The toothbrushes don't seem to exist in France, and I've never found a French toothpaste or deodorant that I like.
On the other hand, there's an inexpensive shampoo in France (by Dessange; I buy it at Monoprix) that is perfect for my hair, and bottles of that *always* come back to the U.S. with me.

Love listening to your thing that I listen to from time to time but this one was so right on, especially about the aspirin I mean ibuprofen. One thing that I still bring back is a large stack of really good corn tortillas because they're a fortune in France - for like 6 of them in the grocery. I could get like 50 of them for less than 2 bucks in California, and they last I separate them into smaller baggies and put them in the freezer. Which brings me to Ziploc bags, rolls of plastic wrap and tin foil. I bring those because the quality of what I buy in France is crap, And they're a total waste of packaging because they have normal packages with very little product inside so you go through them too quickly and you end up throwing away half the plastic wrap anyway because of the incredibly low quality of brands sold in France which constantly rip..

I also bring back Tylenol and Advil because it's so much cheaper. Batteries are also less expensive in the States so I stock up there. In my Brussels suburb there is a British store where I can thankfully get a lot of 'American' products. It's the only place I can get decent breakfast cereal and they have goldfish, fresh non UHT milk, good sharp cheddar, etc. Another bonus is they sell English greeting cards so I don't have to send my poor parents cards in French or Dutch. I buy my bras in the States. Have a very large bust size, and there are just more options in the States. I know some countries like Poland or whatnot have lots and lots of bra shops for larger bust sizes, because genetics can be a factor for bust size and maybe there's just a higher population for it. But I live in France, and don't have the time to haul my butt to like Poland or some place, lol. Also, while I do like nice looking bras, I hate that most of the options for bras in France are only the sexy lacy ones. I like plain t-shirt bras for the most part, and the only ones like that on my size here are usually old grandma looking ones. Sure, there maybe online options, but I always have to try a bra on, bra size even within a country are not universal, and large busts are shaped differently between each person, I really have to try on in person. One time I went to a shop here in France that was supposed to carry my size, when I tried on said size, the bra was shaped really oddly like the designers assumed that breasts only grow out and not all the way around and on the sides and the wires were cut like half way into my breast, it was really weird, and my MIL was like this was supposed to be a higher end store, lol, it was a really weird experience. So yeah, I go home to the States about every 2 years or so, which is about how long bras tend to last with regular use, and I bring back like 4 or 5, hopefully the store is having a sale because bras fir large busts tend to be pretty expensive. Also underwear. I can never find the shape and material that I like in my size in France, so I usually buy some in the States too

I see the spice, that is famous, even though I have not tried it myself. I have never lived outside of Norway, but if I was, I also have a favorite spice, that would probably come with me, and that is a “Scandinavian forest” mushroom spice blend form the brand Santa Maria, that I know they sell in some other countries too. It has a grinder and everything 🥰 It says it is perfect for “game and red meat”, and I don’t eat meat, and not that much gaming either, but it is epic on veggies like average and mushrooms 😋
I also know that the spices are way cheaper here in Norway, then in the USA, so if I was going there, maybe bring some other staples too of spices 🤔
I would also bring some kilos of mixed bulk candy. In every store here in Norway you can mix your own bag of candy. It is huge thing in Sweden too, and at least some in Denmark. Even the tiniest stores have a “bulk” section for mixed candy, but you have to know where they have the best selection, that also is fresh 😋
There are probably more, but that was my first thoughts.
    Love from Johanne, Norway

Recently, a customs tax was added in France to any products that come from outside the EU. That sometimes means a 100% markup on your purchase. This includes care packages you get from friends/relatives. When you order online, you have to make sure the product your buying comes from an EU store to avoid the new tax.

I need neosporin or polysporin or the generic equivalent. They don't have anything like it here, not even on Amazon. I had sores on my feet from new shoes for a year, which was hell walking everywhere. Excuse me, but I'm not going to go to a doctor, just because I got new shoes! I also desperately need some kind of itch cream. The cheap stuff from Dollar Tree is fine. Or any kind. I have only a tiny bit left, after two summers of mosquitoes. If someone who loves me back in the US wants to make me happy, please send me those two things, in any quantity. It's better than diamonds or rubies! I would have also said peanut butter, but I finally found a place that sells peanuts for an affordable price. So I will make my own peanut butter. Peanuts don't seem to be grown in the EU, so there are huge import taxes on them. And I even found a place with real Mexican food, including Maseca, to make tortillas at home. So I will finally have decent , proper corn tortillas. I have to go a long way to get it, but I don't care. European-made tortillas are totally gross-- made with the wrong kind of corn.
