- Tory MP Desmond Swayne makes an extraordinary intervention in the House of Commons, calling for Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance to be sacked.
He said the government's response to the pandemic, which has killed more than 1 million people worldwide, was "disproportionate."

In many ways, I've way more in common with the libertarian right than the woke left. I would be left-wing in the sense that I favour socio- economic interventionism that benefits the working class and the most disadvantaged elements in society. This is something that doesn't seem to rate that high on the list of the contemporary left's priorities if it even registers at all. They are preoccupied with divisive identity politics and calling on the power of the state and big corporations to censure and cancel that which they hyperbollically inflate as 'hate'. In other words, they've lost the plot and they've lost the working class into the bargain. At least, with the libertarian right, you can have civil discourse and a grown ups intelligent conversation without being witch hunted and shouted down. And we usually end up agreeing on civil liberties, cultural and popular sovereignty issues.

Fine but the 'science' (even the WHO) shows that he was right.
He says that the fact that there was no day where the cases recorded were double that of the same day of the previous week. He uses this claim to call the scientists incorrect and accuses the government of using scare tactics. But I don't think that he is considering that the reason that we didn't see cases increasing at those rates was because of the government's lockdowns. Had there not been a lockdown and we hadn't let restrictions interfere with our family lives, we would likely have seen cases double week on week. And then maybe COVID wouldn't, as he says, be the UK's 24th most dangerous killer. It could have been 1st.

Strong and measured and true words, could not have been said any better or stronger but no leader is listening.
This is a really difficult ethical decision for everyone. It is a question of choosing the lesser of two evils. Sometimes however, I think people can be blinded by empathy and can be so unaware of how all the changes we are making to the way we live in our country will have long lasting consequences to us all. This is why I am thankful to this politician for try to tell the other side. You may not agree with him but he is going against public consensus to get his opinion heard and his opinion is a valid one.

Seriously, it's the people who aren't taking this seriously like you, that are causing all the massive rises in covid cases now. Its not rocket science, the guidelines are very simple to understand and follow. And opening up schools wasn't a very clever thing to do, as loads of kids coming together and then potentially giving the virus to teachers and their parents and anyone else they come into contact

I stumbled across this by accident. Hasn't this bloke heard what the NHS and so many people are going through?
when has the NHS ever not said were over worked, under paid, under staffed got no money and its all about to collapse under the strain...lol in all the years iv been alive iv never hurd anything but that from them, in other words no change from the norm. its only A+E, births wards and respitory wards that are busey, other 70 / 80 percent of the NHS staff across the country are all home on full pay, if u got anything other than covid ur refused treatment.
Maybe I'm just another silly American who falls victim into equating the British accent with intelligence and reason. That being said, I wish we had more politicians in the States who would speak like this. We need men and women in government who will stand up and speak the truth without fear of their popularity waning. Money is being made off the suffering of everyday people due to this "pandemic". If that wasn't the case, the world would have stopped acting so mad. God help us all.

We are not that far behind, A McDonalds in every town centre, people crying poverty yet gulping expensive coffee In Cafe Nero, Costa coffee, Starbucks etc, so fat they waddle down the road , not walk . As for the member of Parliament , that was his finest hour (/to quote Churchill) he will probably never be heard of again. I don’t trust any of them .
I don't think the Americans need someone to speak like this because they don't have a "lockdown" such as we do here in this Taliban-controlled country.
