I’m so bloody glad I watched this! How refreshing to see a review where the individual isn’t scared to point out the negatives.. As that’s often more important than the actual positives! 👌
thank you for the reviews i was thinking in buying this but thanks to your review i realize that this compressor does not meat my requirements, thank you
I have a 24ltr 2.5hp 9.6cfm SGS compressor and after 4 years it’s still going strong 👍🏻 hate the noise mind, but I’m slowly moving to electric tools, drills, saws, bike lift, etc... (ps. I upgraded my impact gun and Inner Diameter of my air line hose to 3/8” 9mm bore (high flow line) and the difference was huge! Easily removes stubborn wheel lug nuts now! 👍🏻 Definitely upgrade air line hose first (and fittings) if you want instant improvements or more power for casual use tools.
i need a quitter one some one else told me that a belt driven ones are but also looking at these new electric ultra quite compressors that are 60db do you know what there like
I have the same 100l vtwin but branded as "Hawk tools". I use it solely for spray painting classic motorcycles, and i have had no issues with mine overheating. I could suggest you run 5meters of hose to an eternal pressure guage set at 65/70psi' then a 15m hoee to your gun or other air tool. This gives the air chance to cool, and having the secondary guage will mean it can keep a consistant pressure and the tank wont have to refill as much as running it direct from the air outlet built onto the compressor. Might be worth a shot if your having problems with it overheating and constantly running, it definitely worked for me. Thanks for the follow up video! :)
Cheers for the advice. I’ll look into it, it’s not a problem for me as such I just made sure I mentioned it for the benefit of others 😁 For me this compressor is great (apart from the noise) lol
Hiya mate, i know this comment is 10months old but worth a shot for a reply xD - Based on your experience with painting classic motorcycles, do you think this compressor would be okay for painting 4 alloy wheels / front & rear bumpers / 1 or 2 panels at a time? (say 2 car doors) I'd be using DeVilbiss Gti Spray guns (not the off the shelf £30 jobbies) spraying at a constant 30psi for a few mins (basically coating the panel/alloys then stop to let dry, etc), without dropping pressure and having to wait for the tank to fill backup to produce the correct pressure again.
I have the 50L version of this air compressor and I must agree that for the price and what you actually get it, it is really good. However, it is extremely noisy, even with ear defenders on. I run this in my shed and since it is quite a small space it can be deafening if you do not have hearing protection on. Mine also runs very hot, I have never had any thermal protection kick in, never even knew it had it ? Maybe the 50L version doesn't, who knows. I normally run mine with a small fan directed toward the engine just to help keep it cool because for the stuff I do it usually has to have the compressor running all the time. I use needle scalers, air hammers, die grinders and sometimes I have to stop what I am doing so the tank can build up enough pressure. I run everything at around 90psi. Again it is good for the price, no doubt about it. Would I buy it again ? Probably not, I would prefer something bigger with more power but that is in no way a fault on this compressor, that is just based on my wants and needs. Again a good video Rusty, keep it up mate.
I think you will find if you change the air line forbigger dia it will run most things, your air line is probably 1/4", ...3/8" minimum mate, and connectors , water traps etc... justmy two penneth.
Thanks boy I was thinking of getting one of these but you have answered all my questions and this wouldn’t do what I want to do don’t mind a bit of noise if it’s going to do the job but this is not so thanks for doing the video Regards John
Hi mate, can I ask are you connecting to the regulated or unregulated side of your compressor? If your on the unregulated side that maybe why your pump is running continuously...
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, I am assuming this is a direct drive unit and they are noisy so and so's. The crux of the matter is that the compressor is playing catch up with your gun. Which is using far too much. The Free air delivery is around 7 cfm. The gun needs more, I use Sata's and 2 pulls on the trigger would cause the compressor to trip. So, get a gun which uses around 5.5cfm LVLP and you should be good to go or a spot repair gun which uses say 1.5 bar ish. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. I have a 300 litre old school Ingersoll Rand V twin pump which pushes out around 28cfm. But that is slow running and keeps up with anything I throw at it. The other way around is to add another 50 litre receiver in tandem and you should have more air. Once again, thank you for an honest, down to earth review!
Great review, thanks. I'm looking for a compressor but didn't know that impact wrenches have different torque values. Working on motorbikes I need high torque for rear wheel nuts so will investigate further. The compressor sounds ideal for me.
Ours started tripping fuses at 13 months. After around 10 emails to and fro with SGS and their email trouble shooting responses. They offered to fix it if I sent it back and it wasn’t damaged. Problem there is I’m without a compressor for how long? Very disappointing. I’ve since diagnosed the motor causing the tripping and can’t buy one to replace. Maybe I’m just unlucky but I’d steer clear of SGS in future.
steer clear of SGS in future well that's half of the compressors on the market, Made in china mass produced. watched loads of these Y-tubes and thinking of getting a STAHLWERK compressed air whisper compressor ST 110 Pro pressure output 10 bar
You dont have a link for the rubber oil pan gasket for this model or one that use's same pump design or any parts ive got same compressor with a RyHAS sticker on the side rust skull
I think this is generally what you get at this price range, which is fine for a lot of people. But if you’re demanding big volumes of air for things like spray guns then you’re gonna have to fork out a lot more cash. I was gonna upgrade from my 50L to something like this but I’ve decided it’s not really worth bothering as all I will get is a few seconds more before the pump turns on, and I’ll save my money until I can afford something big like a 270L tandem pump air compressor as that will be all I’ll ever need then.
@Do One I’ve since bought a Fiac 250L tandem air compressor that runs on single phase, I think it produces around 28cfm which is more than enough for me. But yeah anything more and you need 3 phase 👍🏻
Great review Rusty, if spraying is important too you as a DIY enthusiast get yourself a LVLP spray gun opposed to a HVLP gun. You'll be able to spray your shed twice over without putting the same strain on your compressor :D
Sounds like your unit suffers from low compression and is not working up to spec, you are probably losing air in the pump which is why it is always running when working, I would look into getting it fixed before the warranty expires, or at least checked out.
Haha! I had a 50l upright compressor that lasted all of 21 days. Reported it to sgs engineering and they gave me some hogwash repair technique that was never going to work. Then no response to emails for a week. Then when I said take it back and issue a refund as I needed one for work and had to buy elsewhere, they said its past the 30 days returns/refund policy. Erm no, I reported on the 21st day. 3 weeks later and they've only collected it. Said I wanted a refund and all they've done is sent another unit. Sgs engineering are absolute criminals.
I've just ordered one of these 100 litre compressors, ... I've been working with compressors for donkeys years, ... One reason why your spray gun will keep the compressor running all the time is down to the hose and fittings. As you know a spray gun only requires about 30psi and if you have a massive long air line it will suck up more power from the compressor, hence will keep it running. The shorter the air line hose, the better. Another thing, on your first video you was saying about the other gauge not being able to adjust it, you can. Take off the black plastic part on the regulator and you'll see a 10mm nut, or something like that, turn it clockwise for more psi, anti-clockwise for less. Also your power tools will work much better and more power with a shorter hose. Always remember, longer the hose pipe, the more your compressor has to work and the longer it is, the less power you with have.. I've just paid £300 for mine and I know it will do the jobs I do perfectly because my hoses are not overkill to long ;-) .... Hope this advice helps you out.
Thanks, really this compressor is too small for my needs, the hoses I have are still too short as they don't reach to the end of my driveway from the compressor... Thing is, that impact gun still won't undo a wheel nut even with a short hose lol. This compressor is alright though, for the money anyway... I use it almost daily and aside from the noise (My neighbours really don't like it) it's pretty good.
Its interesting actually; I have the 50L version, DD single piston pump - and with an old 1980's professional mechanics impact driver, LVLP spray gun, grease gun, air ratchet, tyre inflator, and blow gun - I can do just about anything. Your impact driver is terrible. I have managed to undo a seized bolt on chassis of a MF135 which even with a 10ft long breaker bar would not shift. The bolt came off, red hot but the compressor kept up; they are brilliant machines; with the correct tools. The noise is an acceptable trade off; never had the unit overheat, but then I have never placed a tool on it with such a demand it would need to be on permanently.
Hi, serious reply only. I want to spray some car panels, boot wing, ect. ive tried spray cans and up to date must of nearly spent £100 plus the primer. I want to get started with a spray gun and compressor. Ive watched tons of videos and ended up with this , because its most recent and in English. So I need a compressor of 14cfm or above , 100litre tank and a 3hp compressor. Can any one give me somne direction. Ive been looking on Amazon and ebay. Ive noted the SGS the Wolf and some others. Any help 4 me to decide? THKs
For whats it worth i ended up with the GT Air 100litre 14.8cfm. It does everything i want. Ive put a high flow kit on it. Takes wheel bolts off , sands , sprays. Well pleased

Using an LVLP spray gun also will help as they have a much lower CFM requirement compared to the HVLP type supplied with the SGS compressor :)
